Editing modes in REAKTOR’s Massive
Part 2 of Bluewater VST’s Massive Essentials puts you in the driver’s seat with Edit Modes, the basis of total drum-computer domination…
Let’s dig in with Massive’s Control Section, starting with the Edit Modes at the left of the panel. The chooser offers four distinct ways of editing the sequencer and modulation patterns that make and sculpt Massive’s sound.
- Copy – Click and drag your cursor (from left to right) across the modulation/sequencer lane that contains the pattern you want to copy. Notice that the edit buffer top right will follow your mouse movements, recording all of the step/velocity data you cover.
- Paste – Enable Paste after you have copied your desired pattern to the edit buffer. Now click and drag your cursor across the destination lane (where you want to place the pattern).
- Remote – Use Remote mode when you want to use your computer or MIDI keyboard to copy and paste patterns (Remote mode activates separate copy and paste buttons to the right of the chooser). Hold down the key—[C] to copy and [V] to paste—while moving your cursor across the sequencer/modulation lane. If you are using a MIDI keyboard, key 52 enables the copy function and 53 enables the paste function.
Lock –When you want to make subtle changes to a particular step in a sequencer or modulation track, activating Lock will keep your cursor from straying into the lanes on either side. Because very small changes in step velocity often result in large changes to the resulting sound (especially if velocity is set to modulate sample pitch), this is a surprisingly useful feature.

Multiples has released Exploration: Reaktor, a free collection of samples taken from a Reaktor ensemble by T2D.
For those of you who follow our twitter feed you will no doubt have heard that T2D has been working very hard making a brand new synth with Native Instruments Reaktor technology.
It is currently in the version 1 stage of development and is a 3 oscillator synth routed through a Modulation Matrix were any of 3 seperate filters can be chosen for each of the oscillators to go through.
However, as this is being developed for T2D’s current record and soundscapes he is reluctant to allow the free download of the synth. He has allowed us to sample three of the current sounds he has made.
So, we have sampled them at every key from c1-c4 and then taken all three sounds and rinsed them through Guitar Rig in order to bulk out the pack.

Chipslapper for Reaktor
Chipslapper is a new instrument for Reaktor, here’s what the maker has to say about it:
Sure, the world probably doesn’t need another simplistic, single-osc Reaktor synth, but I made this specifically to mimic the behaviour of so-called ‘chipsamples’ in ProTracker, FastTracker2 and similar trackers.
Traditionally, since the late ’80s, tracked chipmusic has been created by looping short (~32byte) samples which the tracker automatically uses as pitched instruments. Effects are applied using hex commands and more advanced trackers had extended instrument options which emulated the behaviour of basic synths.
Anyway, purely for my own work, I wanted to have a straightforward, cross-platform means of composing using my old tracker styles/technique in newer DAWs like Ableton Live. If it’s useful to any other afficionados, great – but most people will just find it to be a very dull synth that looks like a Reaktor beginner’s project 😉
Features etc:
- Drop the polyphony in Reaktor if you want to emulate XM channel-count limitations, or switch to mono and use the severely restricted delay controls to mimic pattern-delay.
- Vibdepth (pitchmod vibrato) behaves in the FT2 way, with sweep delaying the effect and phase allowing you to turn the triangle waveshape into FT2’s two optional sawtooth shapes.
- Pan has a Random Range control which, when twiddled, means each successive noteon event will be given a random pan position within that range. This is the closest I can be bothered to get to FT2’s pan envelope, as it wasn’t synced with the song anyway…if you want proper panning envelopes for phrases of notes, do them in your DAW!
- One thing which definitely doesn’t appear in FT2 or PT is the pulsewidth modulation. However, I often use a bank of around 8 squarewave samples with varying pulsewidths and then cycle through them over the course of a melody line: the pulsewidth mod emulates *that* trick, which in turn was always supposed to emulate pulsewidth mod 😉
- Chip Waveform – draw it yourself. This is a bit flakey and doesn’t seem to save the shape if you switch waveforms to something else and then back again.
- Chip Sample – I’ve included a single small looping sample which *hopefully* gets included with the .Ens (if not, I need to figure out how), but the idea is just to load in a short sample and then play it like an instrument. Because Reaktor isn’t as limited as PT/FT2, it’s slightly less fun to use…but you can experiment with longer samples too and play around. ‘Select’ chooses between samples in the sample map, so I guess you could load in a tonne of samples and then automate the Select knob in your DAW to get a wavetable thing going on…
- Arpeggiator – There isn’t one. Real musicians write their own arpeggiations; proper oldschool chipmusicians, even more so 😉 But if you’re really keen on abdicating compositional responsibility, your DAW probably has an arpeggiator built in as a MIDI effect. Go nuts!

Free Reaktor Plugin Delivers Multiband Sonic Mayhem
DNR Collaborative has introduced DEFCON3, a ‘Multiband Audio Deconstruction Unit’ for Native Instruments Reaktor.
According to the developers, ‘DEFCON3 is a complete multiband lo-fi, distortion, audio deconstruction device that is capable of taking any audio and completely mangling it in a variety of ways. It can go from subtle dirt to all out war in just a few knob turns.’

NI has released Reaktor 5.6 providing 64bit support

After some month in beta NI has released 64 bit version of our favorit modular synthesizer Reaktor. Lets see what it gives in terms of performance… anyway now you should be able to use massive sample inside Reaktor although initial reports indicates issues exceeding 2GB. Apart from the 64 bit support I would say that the updated module reference manual is very welcome improvement as the version provided with R5 was embarrassingly incomplete. Also a quite long list of bugs have been fixed. Hats off!
