Simsynth Live | Subtractive Synthesizer

May 3, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Simsynth Live | Subtractive Synthesizer

SimSynth Live captures the big multi-oscillator sound of a MiniMoog, and combines it with the warm, fat sound of Oberheim style SVF filters.

The result? Rich strings, wall to wall brass, and fat punchy basses. And we haven’t forgotten techno sounds either. SimSynth Live uses a filter technique that gives the EMPH knob a sound you can crank.

3 oscillators, each with a dual (warm) mode effectively making 6 oscillators

Ring modulator

A dual SVF filter that programs like an old Oberheim SEM, (lets you mix lowpass, bandpass, and highpass)

Two discrete envelopes and an LFO.Stereo chorus effect, (in case 6 oscillators aren’t warm enough)

Studio quality alias free rendering

FX Panel with EQ, Reverb, Phaser & Delay

FL Studio & VSTi versions included

Skanner XT – unique and highly distinctive virtual instrument

April 27, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Skanner XT – unique and highly distinctive virtual instrument

Native Instruments today introduced Skanner XT, a ‘unique and highly distinctive’ virtual instrument, designed by the team behind Reaktor:

With a strong focus on unconventional tone and genuine musical expression, SKANNER XT is both an exceptional library addition for REAKTOR 5 users as well as an excellent sound resource for the free REAKTOR 5 PLAYER. Part sampler, part synth, SKANNER XT utilizes a unique synthesizer architecture to create a wide variety of intense and cutting-edge sounds for contemporary electronic music production and sound design. Two oscillators ‘scan’ a sample, which at low frequencies deliver a scratch sound.

At higher frequencies the oscillators, shaped by the sample waveform, become the dominant force. In this way, Skanner XT provides a broad range of highly distinctive sounds – from heavy and dirty bass tones to morphing soundscapes and organic pads.

About Skanner XT

Developed together with NI synthmeister Stephan Schmitt, Skanner XT offers two interface views for different levels of interaction with the complex architecture under the hood. Besides a simplified page with a preset morpher and four macro controls, a second view provides access to more detailed parameters in order to further explore the sonic potential of the instrument. A morph control option allows for convenient switching between eight different snapshots – producing unpredictable, evolving sounds that range from the ethereal to the extreme.

Skanner XT is available at the NI Online Shop for $59 / 49 EUR. See the NI site for details.

New firmware and software update for the Continuum Fingerboard

April 26, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on New firmware and software update for the Continuum Fingerboard

Haken Audio has announced a new firmware and software update for the Continuum Fingerboard. The new version 5.01 includes additions to the innovative programmable synthesizer in the Continuum Fingerboard, the EaganMatrix.

The EaganMatrix design was inspired by classical modular matrix patching synthesizers such as the ARP 2500 and the EMS Synthi 100. However, unlike those analog predecessors, the EaganMatrix doesn’t use pins to make patch point connections. Instead, a dynamic formulaic equation can be placed inside a selected patch point, replacing that static pin, creating a simple to amazingly complex relationship between the Continuum playing surface and the flow of sound from patch point source to destination.

The EaganMatrix is a modular digital synthesizer, allowing the user to finely craft their musical sound by digitally connecting audio and control modules via a patching matrix. The EaganMatrix synthesizer is internal to the Continuum Fingerboard, utilizing the Continuum’s internal DSP engine. No external hardware is required. The synthesizer is edited by using an external cross platform editing program, the Continuum Editor. More information: http://www.hakenaudio.com/Continuum/eaganmatrixoverv.html .

Modules: There are a number of source and destination modules available, everything from oscillators and filters to direct formulas. Here is a listing of currently available modules:

* Three flexible summation oscillators, each with controls for frequency, phase, and spectral balance. The oscillators can also act as wave shapers, creating rich harmonic variations to the oscillator input.

* A smooth organic-sounding noise source.

* Two versatile multimode filters, with these inputs: audio to be filtered, frequency, and bandwidth. Possible filters are LowPass, HighPass, BandPass, LowShelf and HighShelf, as well as unity gain BandPass, Notch, and AllPass.

* Two powerful biquad filter banks, which are banks of 8 related but independent biquad filters, with controls for audio input, frequency, frequency spread, bandwidth, bandwidth spread, spectral centre, and spectral weighting. These biquads are the same technology that are used in the current Continuum to create the physical models like the winds and strings. This filters can also act as granular synthesis modules, and a vocal mouth shapes.

* A time delay, with controls for audio input and time. The time delay is suitable for creating chorus and flanging effects, and can be used for echo delays as well.

* Four independent LFOs, each with controls for cycle mode, frequency, and trigger. Available LFO shapes are RampUp, RampDown, Pulse, Triangle, Hann, Square, Sine, and SampleAndHold. The LFOs have been integrated into the EaganMatrix a unique way, allowing each LFO to influence a formula result directly.

* 8 CVC (Continuum Voltage Convertor) outputs. This requires that a CVC be connected to the Continuum to be active.

* 3 independent Midi controller streams for sending formulas to a connected Midi device.

* Output level via formulas.

Also, there are common controls for all voices:
* Reverb control via formulas.
* Convolution body control via formulas.

The output stage incorporates a soft saturation capability, allowing the creation of distortion and overloading effects.

The download for version 5.01 is available in the downloads section of the Haken Audio site: http://www.hakenaudio.com/Continuum/hakenaudiofirmwa.html .

HyperSpace 3D Synth for iPhone

April 25, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on HyperSpace 3D Synth for iPhone

Synthesize music with sculpted waves; grok mesmerizing visuals.The Strange Agency has introduced a new software synth for iOS, HyperSpace.

HyperSpace, a ‘waveform-sculpting 3-D oscilloscope synth’ is the latest edition of TSA’s Space series. HyperSpace uses a unique algorithm to generate images from sound. It works similarly to a harmonograph, but uses its 3 voice oscillators instead of pendulums to create images. Each oscillator is mapped to a dimension in 3-D space. Playing a single note creates a wave, like on an ordinary oscilloscope. Playing two notes at once creates a plane as with the harmonograph, and playing a three note chord creates a volume. There are two oscillators to crossfade between. These can be set to standard shapes as with older synths, but HyperSpace also lets you sculpt the waves with touch. Changing the wave shapes of course alters the sound, but it also alters the generated imagery.

UPDATED: New iPad wavetable synth by Waldorf

March 28, 2012 · Posted in Uncategorized · 1 Comment

Here’s today’s updated Press release on the subject:

Following the tradition of wavetable synthesis – from first PPG synthesizers to the latest developments in terms of Blofeld and Largo – and utilising Rolf Wöhrmann’s (TempoRubato) experience with iPad synthesis, Waldorf & Wöhrmann have come up with a wavetable concept for the iPad.

Thanks to intelligent gesture recognition and plenty of available graphic performance the iPad is perfect for bringing wavetable synthesis to a new level. For the first time it will be possible to plunge into the depths of wavetables and to make their sound content visible with 3D technology.

The cooperation between Waldorf and TempoRubato, also known for their product line NLog Synth, doesn’t stop here: the application will also offer new possibilities for sound manipulation based on Waldorf’s very latest spectral research.

Completely new and unheard sounds

An innovative approach to wavetable synthesis allows for the transposition of the spectrum and the balance of periodic and sound spectra entirely independent from a wave’s position. The existing wavetable technology is thereby extended by two new dimensions, and allows for formant shifts as well as numerous other unheard sounds. Also, unlike with typical wavetable instruments, the number and length of waves in a wavetable will no longer be restricted. It’s the era of wavetable synthesis V2.0!

This app will support a huge number of hardware MIDI interfaces, e. g. all Core MIDI compatible interfaces by IK Multimedia, iConnectMIDI, MIDI Mobilizer II by Line6, ioDock or the Camera Connection Kit by Apple, as well as proprietary interfaces such as the SynthStation by Akai.

App collaboration standards like Sonoma‘s Audio Copy/Paste, Intua‘s Audio Pasteboard and Virtual Core MIDI will also be supported like the upcoming AudioBus standard and KORG’s WIST synchronization technology.

Joachim Flor, executive manager at Waldorf Music GmbH is pleased: “We are truly excited about our collaboration with Rolf Wöhrmann from TempoRubato. Considering his great experience with the iPad synthesis we are planning to release this excellent synthesiser this summer. Then it will be available at the Apple App Store. It’s going to be an exciting time!“

Rolf Wöhrmann is also looking forward to the challenge: “The cooperation with Waldorf Music and the Waldorf developers is a great honour. Waldorf‘s long history in wave table synthesis and the new and innovative possibilities of the iPad will create an astonishing synthesizer for musicians, sound designers and producers.”
