New horror synth – Monstrous
Supersynths has announced the release of Monstrous, a new sample-based VST instrument plug-in for Windows that is described as “the Atmospheric Horror Synth”. It is currently available for the introductory price of $20 (normal price is $30).

the r-52 uses two pentodes, type 12au6. the circuit is derived directly from our award-winning tm-2 filter, but with all the features of our tm-6 filter. a pair of bandpass filters is swept with a vactrol(tm) control element, a resonant treble filter and a less-resonant bass filter, giving a 4-pole lowpass response. filter sweep range (approx): bass-only 80-200 hz, bandpass/lowpass low setting 300-1000 hz, high setting 800-1900 hz. filter resonance/q adjustable from less than 1 to oscillation. voltage gain approx. 2 with resonance set to 10 o’clock position and input level set to maximum. both filters, or one at a time, may be selected and mixed in desired amounts using the front-panel response control. this allows for a wide range of equalization and special sound effects. cv inputs are available for sweeping the cutoff frequency and for affecting the treble filter’s resonance. circuit distortion is less than 0.5% typical.

Free – X*ONE is a virtual monophonic synthesizer
X*ONE is a virtual monophonic synthesizer with one oscillator, one modulator, and one 12dB lowpass filter. Although the design is similar to Alterex’s ViCON the sound of this module is described as “phatter”. This basic unit has some tricks up its sleeve and is one of the core parts of Alterex’s X*PAND VSTi – that will be released next year.

Arracis Gold VSTi Synthesizer’s most significant feature is the 4 x 8 osc step sequencer with adjustable gatelength + modulation on gatelength. With this step sequencer you can have a quite rhythmical output incl short blips (stepping among the oscillators in selectable sequence) plus mixing to the normal (steady) output signal for vivid Pad or Athmos. Vertigo
DiscoDSP has finally released a Mac version of its virtual synth Vertigo.
Vertigo is a 256 oscillators additive synth with resynthesis and sound morphing. It imports WAV audio and PNG images and offers a very accurate recreation of complex musical phrases, drumloops, speech and simple tones. The full version includes 128 presets.

Robert Moog and Max Brand
Synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog began designing electronic circuits for Austrian composer Max Brand in 1957 – the instrument was completed roughly a decade later.
The sounds it produces were featured in a concert at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz on September 6, 2009. The composition is by Elisabeth Schimana, performed by Manon Liu Winter and Gregor Ladenhauf.

I am the Machine – A Personal Approach
Deep within the hallucinatory ramblings of an electro-acoustic sound, it is this voice, hollering, steeped in pathos and desperately overamplified, that sets your teeth on edge. The launch has already been prepared against a background of crackling tension, the rocket has been fired with a whizz and a bang, and has finally slipped into space to the sound of an atmospheric juddering: these sounds in the first minute of Max Brand’s tape composition The Astronauts (1962) are also accompanied by voices, but on the right side of the pathetic. Brand had used NASA recordings of the radio conversations between ground control and John Glenn during the latter’s first flight into space as the basis for his electroacoustic ode, a pathetic oratorio in honor of the god of technology. MIDIbox is an open source hardware platform for making MIDI sequencers and controllers.
MIDIbox Sequencer Version 4 Demo
[0:00] The electronic harp is played by Sculpture (part of Logic Audio) – a Physical Modelling Synth which I really like!
[0:00] MBSEQV4 plays the 16-step sequence with a new “step progression” feature: on each 4 step interval, the step is triggered twice. In addition, a customized groove template is applied on the velocity to accent the notes based on the master measure. This results into a more complex sequence which varies on each beat, but still sounds nice and not too random!
[0:01] to understand the “step progression” feature watch the GP LEDs – they are stopping each 4th step
[0:11] an Echo Fx is added with 64T delay. Note value is increased by +3 and forced to scale
[0:17] an additional VST synth is added which gets use of the new “step progression” feature as well
[0:21] Echo Fx: temporary increased to 6 repeats with +3 Note Value and +150% delay on each echo – let’s scrub the harp!
[0:31] adding drums
