System Exit (sounds from the Large Hadron Collider)

March 14, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on System Exit (sounds from the Large Hadron Collider)

This video looks and sounds better at 1080p.

The music was created using sounds produced by Cern’s Large Hadron Collider, as well as analogue synthesis and signal processing. I created it for the Synthgear.com remix competition and then decided to do this clip to make it more fun.

3D spaceship model and textures designed by T Green.

Other credits:
Thanks to Max Grueter for the Astronaut model. Check out his stuff, it’s amazing: www.grueter.com.

I also used a part of essjayvee’s model for the astronaut’s chair (from Google 3D warehouse).

I used Chris Laurel’s awesome open-source Celestia program to model and render the space journey, planets, etc. The fictional earth-like planet arrived at at the end is called Gradius and was created by Gradius_Fanatic.

There are three photos in the clip which were taken by the European Southern Observatory. Their catalogue numbers are:

eso0544a
eso0332a
eso0927a

The audio I put on youtube is mastered in a less-than-ideal way (and youtube’s audio isn’t much good). This track and others will be *professionally mastered* in the near future and will be released on the net.

Director’s cut from Kate Bush

March 14, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · 1 Comment

Kate Bush has reworked some of her old material for release on a new album, “Director’s Cut”, out in May 2011. The album will hold reworked versions of songs from her 1989 album “The Sensual World” and 1993’s “The Red Shoes”. Note that the songs were not ‘re-recorded’ according to the Kate Bush camp but ‘reworked’. More particularly she ‘reworked’ elements of the songs with the aim of making the album an audio ‘director’s cut’ of her old material.

A ‘reworked’ single, “Deeper Understanding” from “The Sensual World” will be released in April.

The “Director’s Cut” album will be released in 4 formats: digitally, on a CD, on vinyl and in a case-bound book.

Also coming up later this year are 4 re-issues of classic Kate Bush albums.

Renoise 2.7 feature-tour

March 14, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Renoise 2.7 feature-tour

New features of Renoise 2.7 in a nutshell.
Not all of them pointed out, but the most visual and obvious are demonstrated. And still i forgot a few. But i suggest you to go to the Renoise site and find the complete update-list.

Renoise’s internal instruments have been re-engineered. The focal point is a new keyzone editor that supports overlapping, velocity, and key release mappings. The Sample Keyzones editor brings with it user interface refinements, improved drumkit generation, better tuning options, new sample properties, and loop modes. Live instrumentalists can also tap into new realtime rendering modes and MIDI input routing, making Renoise on a laptop a formidable replacement for your old sampler.

Some new Instrument & Sampler features at a glance:

  • Sample Keyzones GUI editor per instrument
  • Map different samples to different velocity ranges
  • Map samples to key release as well as key press
  • Stack samples and create overlapping sections
  • Toggle envelope on/off per keyzone
  • New Release sample loop option for exiting the loop on key release
  • MIDI Input can now be routed to individual instruments and tracks
  • Extended drumkit and keyboard layout generation options
  • Sample envelopes now have Points mode in addition to Linear and Curve
  • Autofade setting per sample for quickly fading beginning and end of samples
  • Select multiple samples and batch edit properties
  • Overhauled instrument properties GUI, now in lower tab

SoX – Swiss Army Knife of Sound Processing Programs

March 14, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on SoX – Swiss Army Knife of Sound Processing Programs

SoX is a cross-platform (Windows, Linux, MacOS X, etc.) command line utility that can convert various formats of computer audio files in to other formats. It can also apply various effects to these sound files, and, as an added bonus, SoX can play and record audio files on most platforms. The screen-shot to the below shows an example of SoX first being used to process some audio, then being used to play some audio files. SoX 14.3.2 was released on February 27, 2011. micronaut – experiment four

March 14, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on micronaut – experiment four

Cranada11 provides another nice video featuring among other things the Boss reverb:

The very definition of getting carried away. I bought a Boss RRV-10 reverb last night, and just wanted to test it out to make sure it was all working, and 5 hours later, here we are.

This piece is done with no sequencing at all. A Max patch does the dirty work, and everything you hear except the snare drum is coming from the hardware synths, six of ’em. I’m arranging things by turning specific metro objects on and off in Max via the Korg nanoControl; they’re all quantized to the Global Clock.

Synthenoxe Part 1.0 – an Elka Synthex impression

March 14, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Synthenoxe Part 1.0 – an Elka Synthex impression

Wavebox2011 has shared this nice JM Jarre inspired video:

Just a quick impression of the Synthex synthesizer in the project studio. The fun-title “Synthenoxe” is a reminiscence of J.M. Jarre’s early studio recordings like Oxygene and Equinoxe. His magnificent sound has inspired my noodling in this video, too.

All the sounds (except for the drums) have been recorded with the Synthex; including the ocean waves and animals in the intro. :-)

While experimenting around with the Synthex, I started recording some audio tracks to the DAW. And I ended up with well over 50 tracks and this demo-video. :-) This synthesizer is such an inspiring machine!

About the synthesizer:

The Synthex is clearly underrated! Maybe because it is not coming from one of the large synth plants in Japan or the U.S.A., but rather surprisingly from an organ manufacturer, the italian company Elka.
Despite this “lack of heritage” the Synthex has an amazing sound and deserves to be named alongside other classic power-synths such as the Jupiter-8 or the Prophet 5.

Sure, Jean-Michel Jarre based his famous laser harp sound on the Synthex – but it’s by far not limited to that cliché.

I looked for an easy way to sync up the Synthex’s internal sequencer to MIDI Clock. The most straightforward way was to hook up a Korg Electribe (ER-1 mkII) to MIDI and have a percussive instrument do the audio triggering of the Synthex. Simple, quite robust and even “programmable” to a certain degree.

Some Synthexes have no MIDI-interface (like the one in the video). But they all have one of the most intuitive sequencers I’ve come across in a classic synth: 4 independant monophonic sequences, easily and quickly recordable in step- or real-time-mode, syncable to an audio trigger.
And if you’re a preset freak, you can even store your sequences along with your sounds as data beeping to a tape-recorder (or another recording device), thanks to the tape-interface. Old school high-tech. :-)

[ to the youngsters: “tapes”, often used in the form of “cassettes”, is an ancient technology for audio recording, quite popular before digital recording and youtube existed. yes, there was such a time, way way back, right after the dinos and the stone age. believe me, i was there. not with the dinos, but in the tape age. :-) ]

keep on sounding!
