Grain Bastard – OP-1 first jam

Background video description:

I’ve just added a new instrument to my setup, the mighty OP-1 from Teenage Engineering :)

This is just my first test/jam from the device manually synced to my MD SPS-1 and Borderlands Granular on my iPad, so don’t expect too much – I haven’t done any vids for a while so I just quickly put this together. Beats from the MD, Synths from the OP-1 and droney glitchyness from Borderlands.

Please also have a look over at idmfnetlabel.bandcamp.com/album/va-sounds-for-skeletons-idmf039 for a free compilation album of electronic goodness, that I’ve managed to worm my way onto somehow. Please have a listen if you enjoy electronic music.

Peace

And while we are on the subject:

A video from Jacques Mongrel

First part in series, showing how I start writing a new song on the Teenage Engineering OP-1.

Visage returns to the stage

May 11, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Visage returns to the stage

New Romantic act Visage returns with a new album “Hearts And Knives” due for release in May 2013. The first single taken from the album will be “Shameless Fashion”.

The new material was written by Steve Strange, Robin Simon, Ben Woods, Nigel Summers, John Bryan, & Rich Mowatt.

It’s not the first time that Visage tries to launch a comeback but in the past Steve Strange’s weird and unpredictable behavior (thieving, being drunk onstage, miming and having his vocals sung by his backing vocalists) made sure that the project got back in the refrigerator over and over again despite the hard work of musicians who surrounded him.

Visage began in 1978 when Steve Strange and Blitz Club partner-in-crime Rusty Egan joined forces with Midge Ure to create a futuristic, synthesizer-led group where style and fashion were matched by experimental but accessible music. The group was soon augmented with members of Magazine and Billy Currie. They recorded their first single “Tar” with Martin Rushent at his Genetic Studio in 1978. Their breakthrough track “Fade To Grey” became a European hit and reached number 1 in 8 countries in 1980.

Quantum Live

quantum maps arbitrary note values to objects in juggling patterns. higher notes correspond to higher throws by default, but any value can be assigned. additionally, the program allows for a distinction between the left and right hands. note triggers are set to the peak of each object, rather than the traditional catching or throwing position. this produces unexpected rhythmic variations, and allows for chords to exist.

The Artemis – A Wind/String Instrument Inspired by the Ondes Martenot

May 10, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on The Artemis – A Wind/String Instrument Inspired by the Ondes Martenot

Inspired by the Ondes Martenot, the Artemis is a synthesizer whose pitch is mainly controlled by a ring attached to a loop of string.

It uses breath control for dynamics and combinable trill keys for discrete pitch changes. Using these together allow for some interesting musical approaches.

When I made this instrument, I decided to expose the loop on this instrument as it is interesting to watch as the pitch changes.

The sound and control core engine were made by Nyle Steiner (it is simply one of his early analog E.V.I.s.) The Artemis was completed in April of 2013.
