MARK JENKINS & The Land of Yrx 1983 “Annus Mirabilis”

February 20, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on MARK JENKINS & The Land of Yrx 1983 “Annus Mirabilis”

“Annus Mirabilis 1983” MARK JENKINS guesting with The Land of Yrx, Shrewsbury open air 1983. Mark Jenkins (Sequential Prophet 600 & Pro One), David Gate (keyboards, drum machine and MC), Rob Andrews (Bass), guests Ray Gordon (flute), Steve Collins (guitar), drunk audience (shouting). Video by Nick Elborough.

For this improvisation I think we’d been listening to Gong, Can, early Ash Ra Tempel, Guru Guru, Cluster and very early Kraftwerk…

The synthesizer sounds used were also used in my set at the first UK Electronica Festival also in 1983, from which there’s no video. This piece is also otherwise unreleased, but I have similar music from around that period on my CD “Analog Archives” available worldwide through Amazon.co.uk and on the CDR “Live Archives” available through www.markjenkins.co

PR8 – pattern-based drum machine that runs on a Nintendo Entertainment System

February 15, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on PR8 – pattern-based drum machine that runs on a Nintendo Entertainment System

PR8 is a 6-track, pattern-based drum machine that runs on a Nintendo Entertainment System, designed and created by Neil Baldwin. PR8 is unlike any other NES music application in that it uses ‘virtual’ tracks that are not explicitly linked to any hardware voice. As a consequence, sounds in PR8 (and by association, each Track) are able to simultaneously use any combination of all five of the NES’s sound-generating voices and a simple priority system is employed to dynamically determine which of the 6 tracks have control over them. Even though PR8 is referred to as a ‘drum synth’, it is also possible (and quite easy) to create melodic instruments and patterns, though the entry and editing of musical notes is a little more abstracted if you’re used to traditional sequencers or trackers. Because of this rather radical approach, the learning-curve for PR8 might be a little steep but patience will reward you with a pretty unique and fun way to create NES music.

Amazing drum machine-like softare  PR8 for the NES has been finally released! Neil Baldwin’s long awaited new software, running on Pulsar’s engine, has seen its first public release in a romantic today. Only two emulators run this baby so you better get your NES and Powerpak ready for proper action!

Drums in the cloud – browser based machine

Patternsketch is an HTML5 and Javascript audio sequencer and drum machine.

Patternsketch is an HTML5 and Javascript audio sequencer and drum machine. With it, you can create audio patterns, play them back, adjust playback tempo, volume, and change the audio kit. You can also save, export, and collaborate with your friends.

Patternsketch is an excercise in imagining what browser based music tools could be, and an exploration in the possibilities of new web technologies. It was built with Javascript (no frameworks) and HTML5 (no flash).

The goal of this project was to create a tool that musicians and casual music fans could use to create music patterns and collaborate on rhythmic ideas with friends. We recognize the performance is currently unacceptable for serious use, but look forward to updates in browser technology to make tools like this a viable option for music lovers.
