Experimental: TONEWHEELS HURDY-GURDY(VIELLE A ROUE OPTOÉLECTRONIQUE)
This optoelectronic hurdy-gurdy was commission by the Acces(s) Festival, Pau France in October 2012.
TONEWHEELS is an experiment in converting graphical imagery to sound, inspired by some of the pioneering 20th Century electronic music inventions, such as the Light-Tone Organ (Edwin Emil Welte, 1936 Germany), the ANS Synthesizer (Evgeny Murzin, 1958 USSR), and the Oramics system (Daphne Oram, 1959 UK). Transparent tonewheels with repeating patterns are spun over light-sensitive electronic circuitry similar to that used in 16 & 35mm motion picture projectors to produce sound.
The TONEWHEELS Hurdy-Gurdy presented at Acces(s) is not an “interactive” artwork in the common sense. While it does not reward the impatient museum visitor with flashing lights and noises at the simple touch of the button, it does invite participation in the process of technological music creation. Although it first appears to be a very traditional instrument known to many folk-music cultures, it functions in a very different way which can only be discovered by playing it.
The artist would like to thank Tobias Traub of Oroborus Customs e.K. and Carlo Crovato for their invaluable assistance in creating this instrument. Circuits designed by Jessica Rylan and Eric Archer are also used within the system.

Preview of the Dubreq Stylophone S2
The new Dubreq Stylophone S2 takes the basic idea of the Stylophone, a stylus played instrument that uses a printed circuit board as the keyboard, and turns it into a fully spec’d analogue synthesizer.
The Stylophone S2 is an entirely British made, analogue synthesizer that will fit in a laptop bag. The S2 features include; All metal construction, a full 37 note 3 octave keyboard with +/- 2 octave shifter featuring a wire-free stylus and finger-touch playing method, an all analogue signal path, a classic British style 12dB/octave state-variable filter, dual all-transistor voltage controlled oscillators, sub-oscillators for super-fat bass, an eight waveform LFO with a 14 octave range, an auxiliary-input socket to use the filter and envelope-generator for other instruments, a 1/4″ output jack socket as well as an internal speaker and headphone socket and a CV and Trigger input sockets.

Big Beat is probably the largest drum machine in the World. The buttons stretch over a 10 m wide and 3 m tall wall.
It’s also a place for social contacts. If you want to hold more buttons and create more comples rhythms, you have to find buddies to help you.
It’s also some sort of choreographic machine. You have to explore new positions to hold more buttons.
Finally Big beat is a game. Tones are hidden in the drum sounds. If you find 3 sounds you will go to the next level with new drum sounds. If you the 5th level you have won the game.
Big Beat is built and programmed by Magnus Frenning, concept and sound design by Håkan Lidbo.

UFO stands for Ultrasonic Frequency cOntroller.
- Five ultrasonic sensors – that is, distance sensors based on ultrasonic echo location (a typical range-finding sensor)
- Send MIDI notes, using gestures to send notes with controller data. (This is a bit like the Theremin arrangement – and like any touch-less arrangement lacks tangible feedback – but with more axes of data. And unlike the Theremin, it’s tuned to scaled octaves so you send fixed notes, as on a piano.)

Experimental: The UFO Controller

The UFO is an ultrasonic MIDI controller designed to let you control your music software and external synthesizers with hand gestures.
The UFO controller uses five ultrasonic sensors and captures gestures, based on distance detection. The vertical movement of your hand above any of the sensors is converted to standard MIDI data.
Improvising with the UFO Controller and Ableton Live 8. UFO is a performance MIDI controller designed to change your electronic music livesets for good. Wave your hands in the air and create complex musical patterns. UFO is currently an Arduino based prototyping project.

The most minimal record ever made
WOW is a vinyl record containing a single ultra-low frequency which will alter slightly depending on the mechanical components of your record player. Use more than one system to play several records simultaneously and the air around you will start pulsating.
Play 33 ⅓ Hz on 33 ⅓ rpm or 45 Hz on 45 rpm. Feel free to use the pitch wheel or even touch the record to control the sub-sonic wave field. Your choice of record players, the number of records and the character of your room create your individual listening experience.

Both sides of WOW contain just a single sine tone, the most simple sound there is. Its frequency is directly proportional to the rotation speed of the record player. This means on a standard setting of 33 ⅓ rounds per minute (rpm) you’ll hear an extremely low tone of 33 ⅓ cycles per second (Hz). Play it at 45 rpm and you’ll hear a slightly higher bass tone of 45 Hz.
These frequencies are very close to the lower limit of human hearing and will be more felt than heard. This sensation can be irritating for some, pleasant for others.
Move around and you will experience your room’s reaction to the sound – some spaces will be shaking, others may be still.
