Odyssey Patches and Tutorial

Published 1973 by Arp Instruments Inc.

I’ve just put together the pics and the audio track from arpodyssey.com/roger-powell.html because it’s so nice to have it together…

This is the most beautiful tutorial for the ARP Odyssey i’ve ever heard. Thanks to Roger Powell for the tutorial and to Guy Phethean and the arpodyssey.com -people for keeping it alive.

While the Minimoog proved to be a runaway success as the first compact studio synthesizer, ARP responded with a compact and user-friendly studio synthesizer of their own with the Odyssey in 1972. An almost equally legendary machine itself, the Odyssey was ARP’s highest selling synth back then, and still is to this day in the second-hand market.

The Odyssey essentially gives you a simplified hard-wired ARP 2600 in a much smaller and affordable package. The Odyssey is a 2-oscillator analog synth (with duo-phonic capability) and it sounds really nice; the Minimoog has three oscillators and is capable of thicker sounds. The Odyssey comes well equipped with all the tweakable features and analog goodness you’d expect: a resonant low pass filter, ADSR envelopes, sine or square wave LFO, and a sample-and-hold function.

The Odyssey also added a few new features such as a high pass filter that could be used in series with the low pass, oscillator-sync capability, and pulse-width modulation. It is a very professional and expressive machine that can create nice analog basses, interesting leads, great effects and sweeping sounds straight out of a Tangerine Dream album!

There were many versions of the Odyssey over the years, each a little different. They can be broken down into 8 models spanning 3 Mark “Mk” versions.

Micro Patch Synth: patching and arpeggiator demo

“In this video I demonstrate how to patch the keyboard to VCO1.

I then play each arpeggiator pattern in sequence.

NOTE: The software still requires a fair amount of work to reduce the noise and buzzing from the waveform synthesis.”

Korg Polysix Factory Patches Demo!

November 18, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Korg Polysix Factory Patches Demo!

At first glance the Polysix looks like a scaled-down Mono/Poly, but really it’s not! In fact it had a lot of great new features such as 32 memory patches, 6 voices of polyphony, cassette backup of memory, even programmable modulation effects and Chorus, Phase, Ensemble! The Polysix has warm-sounding real analog oscillators, softer and brassy-er sounding that the Juno. Engage the built-in Chorus on a simple single-oscillator sawtooth patch and you were pretty darned close to that expensive Prophet sound. But the big ace in the Polysix’s hand was the Ensemble effect. Instant Mellotron-like strings.

Watch the end! The end is the sound effects bank. Which is awesome. I have owned a few Polysix’s in my time and this one takes the cake by far. These patches are awesome. This polysix also has midi in installed AND I have the instructions on how to actually use it. It also has a new battery, most of the IC chips have been taken out, and put into a new board with IC sockets.

Kiwitechnics Patch Editor Demo – Take control

November 6, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Kiwitechnics Patch Editor Demo – Take control

Kiwitechnics Patch Editor Demo with a Roland Juno 2 and a Roland MKS-70

The Patch Editor has been designed for easy ‘live’ use with many of the older keyboards with easy to use controls for every synth type. Every active control will light up to make fast changes simple and buttons are colour coded depending which state is active. Each control that is changed will clearly identify itself on the display.

There was a stage when most of the keyboards manufactures went thought a process of removing all the knobs and replacing them with a parameter driven system. Anyone who has used one will know how difficult it is to use, especially live. When the complaints started arriving some started making plug in patch editors. The problem with these is they only worked on one type of keyboard and were (and still are) expensive and rare. The ‘Patch Editor’ can be used in place of a PG-200 (with an easily made cable), PG-300, PG-800 (with an easily made cable) and MPG-80 as well as handle midi control of midi and sysex capable keyboards. It includes an internet update system for software changes or new keyboards support, and includes an external input that can be mapped to any continuous control and all the active controls light up to make it easy to use. Each control in each synth is kept in lookup tables. This approach has made the Patch Editor very versatile and flexible.

Some of the features are:

• Can translate midiCC to the currently selected patch. This will allow any synth to be controlled via midiCC for software that does not support sysex. One midiCC command for filter cutoff adjust, for instance, will output the correct codes for filter cutoff adjust for any selected synth. • Can control both the Upper & Lower Tone boards in the MKS-70 & MKS-80 from the Patch Editor directly separately or combined. Note, the MKS-70 needs the latest system ROM (v1.08).

• Every control identifies itself and it’s value on the display in real time. This is important when unused controls are reassigned as is done in some synth types.

• Each synth type has a separate synth midi channel which is remembered. The Patch Editor also has a midi channel for it’s own midiCC control.

• All switch positions are remembered for each synth type.

• A ‘Manual’ button can send every control to the synth being controlled for an instant setup. The Roland JX-3P & OB Mx1000 have issues doing this but all other synths work well.

• The ext input allows control of any one variable parameter from an external voltage source. For example a foot pedal could be used to control the filter cut off much like a waa waa pedal might.

• The control lights can be dimmed to suit current light levels. • Top quality components have been used throughout.

A few sound examples from the updated Sinevibes bank for Sunrizer, which now comes with 40 patches. To get this bank, make sure you got the latest update of this app, and you’ll find it in the “web library”. Oh yes, make sure to check out Sinevibes products too: http://www.sinevibes.com/

Short info on the Sunrizer:

Sunrizer synth (previously known as ‘Horizon synth’) is a virtual analog synthesizer that takes the definition of iOs synthesizer to the next level. Thanks to carefully designed architecture and heavy usage of coprocessor it blurs the boundaries between iOs and hardware synthesizers. Sunrizer was built to perform and works perfectly with any MIDI keyboard or sequencer. A lot of research has been done in order to achieve unheard warmth and clarity.

Highlights

  • True SuperSaw sound emulation, first found in the legendary Roland JP-8000 synthesizer. SuperSaw is a layered waveform consisting of multiple saw waves which are detuned to create an extremely full and epic sound. It’s possible to use 2 supersaw oscillators per voice * 7 polyphony = 98 saw oscillators playing the same time!
  • Two independent filters per voice with configurable routing. You can select between various filter types including classic resonant LP,HP,BP,Notch and less common like Comb and Formant.
  • The Morph Group function lets you continuously morph of up to 30 parameters in a sound (including effects), using only the modulation wheel.

Early Experiments on Custom UltraNova Synth/Effects Patches

My friend Mark Mosher in a nice experiment with the UltraNova:

Captured Live on Ustream at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/mark-mosher-live-experimental-electronic-music. I’m working on set of performances patches for the UltraNova synthesizer (the blue one on top) that lets me not only use it as a synth but also process all the other instruments in real-time. This is an early expeirment where I’m using Theremin and Blofeld synth as audio sources for UltraNova Synth and FX. Tenori-On is triggering notes on UltraNova. UltraNova is acting as a mixer and the sound card and is actually streaming audio directly to USTREAM via USB.
