Prototyping the fingering system using TouchOSC

February 19, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Prototyping the fingering system using TouchOSC

I decided that rather than blowing up my laptop at this stage of the project,icould refine the pure data patching first, using a virtual switch system before integrating the hardware switches with the arudino, later. The purpose of this system is to provide a complete live performance system that incorporates lights, sound, and dance in one cohesive new form. The helmet, which looks like an afro, is made of carbon fiber and will house lip and breath sensors, a wireless microphone system, in-ear monitoring with ambient mics (so I can hear things around me without taking the helmet off), a digital compass for directional processing, an accelerometer, and two very powerful PC fans so I don’t have a heat stroke while wearing it. Why have a carbon fiber helmet? Primarily because a friend who is a professional creator of artificial limbs offered to help me make use of the material, and also because it’s durable and very lightweight. Oh, and I almost forgot — BECAUSE ITS f&%(ING CARBON FIBER! It’s the coolest-looking material on Earth! Ahem.

MIDI-controlled 8-bit digital synthesizer & lo-fi audio sampler

February 19, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on MIDI-controlled 8-bit digital synthesizer & lo-fi audio sampler

Introduction to the “deMIDulator”: my PIC-based MIDI-controlled 8-bit digital synthesizer and audio sampler. That’s a lot of hyphens!

Device generates several different sounds based on incoming MIDI Note On/Off, Pitch Wheel and Control Change messages. Default waveforms are Sine and Square. An audio sampling function is available to record custom waveform samples that can then be played-back similarly to Sine and Square waveforms (think Impulse Tracker or Scream Tracker or any other tracker from 1997). Audio input is switchable between on-board microphone and external 4-conductor headset jack.

Current Features:

* Simple interface

* Sine, Square and audio Sample playback waveforms

* Audio input switchable between on-board Mic and headset jack

* Up to 4 seconds of recorded audio @ 8bit x 3.937kHz

* Switchable mono / 4-note polyphony for all waveforms

* Pitch Wheel (glitch) support

* Sustain support

* Program Change support for switching waveform modes

* All MIDI notes implemented

* Volume and Output Filter Cutoff controls

* Powerful 150mW headphone amplifier can drive headphones or external speaker

* 4-conductor audio jack for use with iPhone compatible headsets (earbuds w/mic)

* Powered by 3 x AAA batteries, DC power jack or ICSP header

* Final firmware written completely in Assembly

* ICSP header for reprogramming PIC

* PCB includes unpopulated MIDI output jack for fun

BooTweak Designs has announced that its custom programmed Kontakt library BooTweak is now available as donationware.

With BooTweak, you can quickly find, edit and perform with your samples from one performance view. Think of it as the uber-template you wished you had every time you drag a group of samples into Kontakt where they huddle, naked and afraid, with only a lone volume envelope to comfort them.

BooTweak is available for Kontakt 4.11 or higer. All of the BooTweak samples, kits and 3rd party sample kit files are now free for download. Donations are much appreciated.
