Rob Papen Blade Introduction – Released yesterday
Rob Papen’s brand new virtual synthesizer Blade released yesterday. The price is € 99USD 119 (introduction price until end of May) and is available http://www.robpapen.com/blade.html.
At the heart of BLADE, ready to twist and transform your musical mind, lies the Harmolator. An additive synthesis system, which rather than using the system of changing additive partials, uses global controls which capture the essence of additive synth in an intuitive way making the creation of sounds much easier than using other additive synths.
The nine Harmolator controls allow you to create a vast range of sounds so you get all the amazing sounds that additive synthesis can generate with the added simplicity of traditional subtractive synthesis.
The Harmolator allows oscillator spreading, fattening the sound and also square / sine wave sub-oscillator. What’s more, the sound can be modified further by the 21 per-voice distortions types and 14 filter types.
Blade offers total control of the sound over time using an array of different modulation controls.
The most significant of these is the central XY screen. Here you can either alter things directly by moving the cursor around, or you can record paths which can be replayed.
The recorded path can be looped, bi-directional looped and tempo based as well. Even the speed of the XY recording can be modulated for dynamic changes!
So the XY pad is also an incredibly advanced “human input” modulation source.
Furthermore, Blade has the full range of other modulation sources, including a dedicated envelope, LFO and velocity as modulation source for Harmolator controls.
Two FX units featuring all the FX from other Rob Papen products, plus the Arp / Sequencer and an Easy page which allows you to easily control sounds, all add up to an amazingly flexible and useful instrument at the cutting edge of today’s synthesizers!

The video demonstrates the basic sound of the unit by itself, then run through a filter (buchla 292c) with the VoS LFO modulating the filter cutoff. The CV1 input is demonstrated using a standard doepfer LFO. It has an attenuator on the panel and controls the rate of the VoS’s LFO. CV2 is fed an oscillator signal to modulate the pitch of the VoS. Towards the end of the video some interesting mod and sync effects can be heard utilizing these control inputs.
Golden Ensembles 3 – new massive collection of 44 ensembles for the Reaktor
Musicrow has announced Golden Ensembles 3, a collection of 44 ensembles for the Reaktor 5 software synthesizer by Native Instruments.
Golden Ensembles 3 now includes the two mega-synths, Ebola and Cobra, the new Bass Lab bass machine, and many other impressive synthesizers and instruments. In addition, it contains classic processor emulations like Crow Tape Echo and Plate Reverb, and unique sound design tools such as the new Sound Pilot, Executer, and White FX. Everything is packed, with hundreds of presets ready to be used.
Changes in Golden Ensembles 3
- Sound Pilot, a new breed of audio tool that blurs the difference between a sound processor and a sound generator. It is not an effect. It is not a synthesizer. It’s both: a sound processor that produces synthesized effects.
- Bass Lab 2, a dedicated bass synthesizer that uses powerful oscillators, super fast envelopes, a transient shaper, a bass booster, extended distortion section and other special features -for the creation of a vast range of fat and punchy electronic bass sounds.
- Analogica filter offers high quality analog filter emulation, with a distinctive warm character. It combines a very intuitive interface, with many useful extra features and modulation options.
- Phase Lab, a special tool for phase correction and comb filtering elimination. It is also a great creative tool for sound shaping, where you can radically change the tonal color of your sound by changing its phase settings (Instead of using an equalizer).
- Green Master Tape, a new 1/4 inch tape machine emulator that brings the typical characteristics of analog tapes to your digital studio.
- Other ensembles were deeply revised with new features, sonic improvements, a new GUI and many new presets and sounds.
Golden Ensembles 3 is available to purchase for the introductory price of 99 EUR through April 2012 (regular 169 EUR). Users of previous versions can upgrade to Golden Ensembles 3 for 49 EUR.
Sine+Noise Synthesis, featuring 3D displays
Related to this week’s buzz around the new Waldorf synth, Wolfgang Palm has shared a link with information that might give us more info on what the new project is all about:
Sine+Noise modelling is an analysis/synthesis technique, where an audio signal is decomposed into sine waves plus an additional noise signal.
I started developing such a system in 2003, and refined it over the years. It is now sold to Waldorf. The release is planned later this year.
The advantages of Sine+Noise modelling:
- all audio signals can be resynthesized
- each partial sine wave can be edited individually in its loudness contour
- time/pitch manipulation in a wide range
- morphing of totally different sounds possible
- arbitrary filtering in the frequency domain

PPG modular demo
Before Mr Palm of PPG made his famous blue PPG Wave polysynthesizers he made some analog modulars and mono synths. On the video is a small PPG modular system including a step sequencer shown at the Frankfurt Musik Messe. Very few where made and Tangerine Dream is the most notable user in the late 1970’s.
Jam on a modded Korg Monotron
Filthy little modified Monotron jam: LFO out to gate in, 1 sequencer feeds CV to pitch in, another sequencer feeds CV to manipulate the LFO’s rate. ////This Tron is a beast! ////// Mods: CV in for pitch, gate, filter cutoff and LFO rate. External LFO out with depth control knob. Two 1/4″ outs, two 1/4″ inputs for the filter and a master volume knob. Also added an over drive feature.
