Demonstration of a very unique and rare object – the first ever drum machine
The Chamberlin Rhythmate has the distinction of being the first drum machine ever produced. Only around ten were made by Harry Chamberlin from his Upland, California garage back in 1949. Some have said that the Wurlitzer Sideman was the first drum machine, but Chamberlin’s invention preceded it by ten years.
The Rhythmate uses a 1″ magnetic tape loop which is read by a tape head that can be moved up or down to play back 14 separate drum patterns. The tempo is adjusted by moving a spindle up or down which affects the speed of the tape moving across the head. The Rhythmate has a built-in amplifier and 12″ speaker.
In 1951, Harry Chamberlin used his idea of magnetic tape playback (samples) to create the Chamberlin Model 200 keyboard. The Model 300/350, 400, 500 and 600/660 models followed.
In the mid 1960’s, Harry’s concept was used by Mellotronics to create their now famous line of Mellotron keyboards. Mellotronics did not ask Mr. Chamberlin for permission to use his idea and he was not at all happy about it. But they agreed to pay Harry $30,000 in compensation, which was quite a bit of money in 1966.

3 – THE MIXER for quick and subtle sound mixing of your drum kits. Featuring settings for volume, pitch, sample length, custom drum kit element for each channel, mute and solo mode.
4 – THE FX TRACKPADS a creative duo of FX trackpads to distort, modulate and transform your beats. The effects include: Overdrive, Delay, Phaser, Texturizer, Robotizer, Filter and Compressor.
5 – THE SONG COMPOSER allows you to quickly make a song with the beat patterns you have created. Just drag and drop the patterns onto the timeline. Fast and easy.

iPad App – i505 Drum Machine
Demo of the i505 app that emulates the Roland TR-505 drum machine.
A cheap (budget) drum machine. It features 16 drum tones which unfortunately, are only mediocre samples. Its memory contains 48 patterns and 6 songs. Unlike its TR cousins it does not have individual drum tone outputs. There is no drum tone editing capability either. It does however feature extensive MIDI implementation, even the pads will transmit MIDI data. The 505 works well with a computer and sequencer or as a stand alone drum machine. It is extremely basic and unexciting but does make a good starter or play-along drum machine.

The oscillator has all traditional waveforms and a selection of 4bit wave tables, samples, generative algorithms and frequency modulation available. Noise source includes multiple different types of PRNG (pseudo random number generator) and wave formulations, and control is available over frequency, volume, and sweeping of those parameters. An LFO is also included which is routable to all parts of the synthesis engine, with selectable waveform, frequency, depth and re-triggering options.

meta.DJ drumtron
The video reveals a bit more about the new drumtron drum machine in meta.DJ, the new iPad DJ software from Sound Trends.
Drumtron lets you layer the groove on a voice-by-voice basis, with each voice (kicks, snares, hihats, etc.) having 4 different energy/density levels. Now you can easily build the drums dynamically in response to how you want your Set to match the dance floor.
