“My Gibson acoustic guitar is a true one of a kind, it has a sound like no other and plays like a dream.  I’ve exploited it previously with my Gibson E-bow rack and this week I have put it to work again in another free Ableton Live Rack.  I sampled each of its six strings and racked them all together inside Live, added effects, and created what turns out to be a nice atmospheric pad sound.  I’ve designed it with a compressor ready made for easy side chaining, so you can get this instrument breathing and moving in time with other elements of your tracks.  Have fun with it and spread the word!”

JM-DG Dirty Trumpet and Drum Rack for Ableton Live

This is Free Weekly Ableton Live Rack #30! Made from samples from JM-DG http://www.jm-deejay.com/ Check it out and enjoy!

download the instruments here: http://bit.ly/freesynth30

This weeks free Ableton Live racks come from reader JM-DG.  Over the last few months JM-DG has sent me a couple tracks made with various AfroDJMac racks, and he recently stepped it up with an offering of his own.  Created with an old trumpet that almost landed in the trash, JM-DG brings us an instrument with lots of warmth and character.  Not always perfectly in tune but packed with plenty of charm, this trumpet is sure to add a bit of life into your music.  I’ve taken what he sent me and added a couple of little touches and effects, as well as adjusting the tuning to make it a bit more playable.  As an extra bonus, I took the drums from JM-DG’s demo song and chopped them up into its own instrument rack.  So you get a unique trumpet sound as well as a drum kit to play around with.  Make sure you stop by JM-DG’s site and say thanks!

Bass enhancer – WOK releases BassPlus VST

October 17, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Bass enhancer – WOK releases BassPlus VST

WOK tells us that BassPlus is an enhancer for low frequencies that is intended for drums, but works on other signals too. It’s not a fixed EQ, but has a detector for lower frequencies and enhances them and/or adds a new subtone.

Adjusting the amount of bass frequencies as well as the extra bass volume and frequency is quick and easy, the plugin can even be used in the end mix.

Unlimited, free version. Made with Synthedit 1.1 (no multicore bug).

SQ-80 Rack for Ableton Live

September 22, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · 1 Comment

This Ableton Live rack was created using samples from a SQ-80 synthesizer on the “Hush” preset. The samples are courtesy of Tom from http://www.waveformless.blogspot.com Please check out his site for lots of great information about electronic music and a weekly sample pack download.

Download the Instrument Rack @ http://bit.ly/freesynth26

Today is an exciting day for me, it marks six months of releasing these Ableton Live Racks for your downloading pleasure.  I want to thank you for your support and kind words, it means a lot to me and has made this a truly exciting project to work on.

A big reason I do this is to meet new people and share ideas and music with people I would otherwise have no way of reaching;  I thought that this 26th Ableton Rack should reflect that.

One great soldier of information in the electronic music community is Tom who writes the blog Waveformless.  The motto of the site is a “Freeform discussion of electronic music and the techniques and gear used in making it.”  I highly recommend checking it out and exploring the vast information from synthesizer news to free sample Fridays.  This weeks Free Ableton Live Rack was created using some of Tom’s free samples.  Thanks to Tom for sharing these samples and letting me rack them up for everybody’s enjoyment!

I’m not going to pretend I know anything about the SQ-80, I’ve never touched one in my life, but therein lies the beauty of the internet.  Tom supplied us with a bunch of samples from the “Hush” preset, as well as a sample of the synth powering down.  From there I have merely thrown the samples into Live’s Sampler and mapped out some choice macro knobs.  The result is something that I hope you will find useful.  (If nothing else, play around with the notes on the extreme high end of the keyboard.  That’s where the samples of the SQ-80 being powered down are, and the sounds I am most excited to use in my own productions.  Great call on adding that sample, Tom!)

Charlatan – free polyphonic, subtractive virtual analog soft synth

September 11, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Charlatan – free polyphonic, subtractive virtual analog soft synth

BlauKraut Engineering has released Charlatan – a free polyphonic, subtractive virtual analog software synthesizer for Windows.

Charlatan is a polyphonic, subtractive virtual analog software synthesizer plugin whose design focuses on sound quality and easy usability. The design philosophy was to provide a feature set just large enough to cover a wide range of sounds rather than an infinite number of parameters and modulation options cluttering the user interface and distracting from the creative process. That said, Charlatan’s synthesis architecture is flexible enough to create all kinds of sounds, from conventional classic leads, basses and pads to weird blips and noises.

While making no compromises about sound quality, the algorithms have been optimized for efficient CPU usage making Charlatan well suited as a ”bread and butter” synth even in projects with a large number of plugin instances.

Charlatan is available for free download via BlauKraut Engineering.

Features

Main features of Charlatan:

  • 2 oscillators with triangle, sawtooth, rectangle and noise waveforms
  • oscillator pulse-width modulation (PWM) and slew rate modulation (morphing between triangle and sawtooth)
  • oscillator hard synchronization and ring modulation
  • 2 ADSR envelope generators
  • 1 LFO
  • 3 filter types emulating nonlinear characteristics of classic hardware: 4-pole (24 db/oct) and 2-pole (12 db/oct) lowpass, bandpass
  • 3 voice modes: Monophonic with retriggering, Monophonic Legato and 8-voice Polyphonic
  • low CPU usage
  • 100% coded in C++
  • native 64-bit support
