Free Synth Work Station and FX for Ableton
AfroDJMac here, bringing you another Free Ableton Live Rack. This one is an entire Live Set that I use to play virtual synthesizers live. In the video, I explain how I have set up 7 different synths (all included in download) as well as my OP-1 by Teenage Engineering for live performances. The synths are routed through a multi effects rack, which I control with an Akai MPK49 and Keith McMillen SoftStep. Everything is explained and can be customized to your own personal set up. Last fall, I got a call from my friend Chris P Cauley asking if I could fill in on the bass guitar for his band, The Chris P Cauley Collective, at a gig at the Patchogue Theatre here on Long Island. We managed to squeeze in a rehearsal and the show went well. Later that night he asked me if I wanted to set up my computer and play some synthesizers in his band. It definitely took me by surprise because I’ve never played synths in a band, and to this day, don’t play the keyboard well enough to ethically call myself a keyboard player! But, I excepted the challenge and have been doing it since. My set up has evolved like crazy, equipment has been changed and added, settings have been tweaked for weeks to only be thrown out in favor of some other crazy idea. Even as recent as last night things have been changing. But right now I have figured something out that works well for me and the role I am trying to fill in Chris’ music…
For this weeks Free Ableton Live Rack, I am sharing my CPC set and going through the details of how I use it. I am always amazed at how many different ways people use Live, but I haven’t really seen too much information online about how to use Ableton simply as a synth workstation (trust me I looked!). So, I guess this one is most appropriately handled in a video walkthrough and your own experimentation. In the video I discuss routing inside Live, “Dummy” tracks, setting up midi controllers, building effect racks, sending multiple synths through the same effects, morphing synths, using external synths (my beloved Teenage Engineerings OP-1)… So, download the Live Set and use it to play live, load your own sounds, or the effects rack that is inside.
Alexander Hacke (Einstuerzende Neubauten) releases Zebra soundset
Alexander Hacke (Einstuerzende Neubauten) has released a sound-set for Urs Heckmanns virtual synthesizer-software Zebra which is called “New York City”. The set consists of 150 sounds ranging from weird one shot effects to slow evolving cinematic soundscapes and complete multi layered backing tracks.
The sound set is a 100% copyright free collection of individually programmed artistic patches which can used for film-scores, industrial music , electro dance beats and general experimentation. Free sample pack based on the classic Roland 909
Tape Death has released Jomox XBase-09 Kicks, a free sample pack featuring sounds from the hardware drum machine.
The Jomox XBase-09 is an analog drum machine based on Roland’s 909. The difference is like the Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris fight in Way of the Dragon. They both got kicks, but at the end of the day Bruce Lee broke Chuck Norris’ fucking neck. The 909 is good, but the Jomox is better.
Our new sample pack consists of 53 samples from Hyphae’s XBase-09, created by Hyphae and Megatroid one hazy night in Hyphae’s studio. A secret weapon for years, we’re now sharing them with you cause we’re just good people. You can check out Megatroid’s new Jackie Onassis remix for a taste.

Free Weekly Ableton Live Rack – Fender Feedback
Here’s AfroDJMac’s new free weekly Ableton rack featuring the fender guitar.
Here’s two instrument racks created using screeching feedback from Fender Mustang and Jag-Stang guitars, played through sea-foam green Fender Deluxe. Surprisingly, despite coming from such a loud and wild source, these racks are fairly mellow and reminiscent of a vintage keyboard. In the video, it is also shown how the racks work and take you through the effects. Also spend a little time explaining the mapping of the racks.

One of my favorite sounds is that of a distorted electric guitar as it begins to screech into blazing feedback. It’s very unpredictable, wild, and difficult to control. The overtones and harmonics it creates are hard to replicate with any other instrument. For this weeks Ableton Live Rack installment, I sampled some feedback from my Fender Mustang and Fender Jag-Stang coming out of my sea-foam green Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.
Sometimes the results are surprising when you create a sampled instrument, and this is one of those unexpected outcomes. The resulting instrument sounds more like a vintage keyboard with some rich harmonic content than a screeching guitar. Also, the actual guitar used makes quite a big difference as well, so I’ve include two racks this week, one created with the Mustang and one with the Jag-Stang. I added effects that I thought were useful to the sounds, Lo-pass Filter, Tremolo, Vibrato, Chorus, Reverb, Flanger, and just to dirty it up a bit, Vinyl distortion, which can be mix to taste. Dub Siren built in Max4Live – free download
A Dub Siren built in Max4Live inspired by the one found on Dub Scrolls. A Square wave controlled by 2 independent LFO’s (a rectified sine and a pulse) both with retriggered phase, and a chopper section. There are 20 MIDI CC accessible internal presets and new ones can be saved as a seperate instance or with your track. It was designed to be used Live so it is very simple, very user friendly and sounds just about right I think. For more information just open it up and have a look inside.

Duran Duran gives away free new album – an apology for cancelled shows
In order to make up for a string of unfortunately canceled gigs: Duran Duran. As a ‘thank you’ for the support that their fans have given the band members over the past few weeks (the band had to cancel various concerts, see also: “Even more Duran Duran concerts canceled – MRI scan for Simon Le Bon”), they have uploaded their May 12th performance in Rome at RDS radio for you to enjoy.
That’s right, a free 9-track soundboard concert!
