Extreme Granulator Control Experiment
This is a fun test of the monome arc app platesHD controlling parameters of Robert Henke’s M4L patch Granulator.
platesHD is basically a drawable LFO that is controlled by the monome arc. The HD version produces high resolution control ranges suitable for precision control way beyond midi’s 127 CC values.
This works nicely for slowly scrubbing through a long sample or controlling things such as grain duration.
Thus was a quick iPhone grab, so the audio and video quality are not good. But that was not the goal here.

Granular Synthesis with Alchemy
Dan Worrall has done it again and created a great tutorial on granular synthesis with Alchemy. It covers all aspects of the granular engine as well as explaining in detail how the position and stretch knobs can be used to create all kinds of effects. All Alchemy videos are now available for everyone to watch, even if you don’t own Alchemy yet.
Granular synthesizer written in Max/MSP
Grout is a granular synthesizer written in Max/MSP.
It uses step sequencing to route individual grains through different effects and create complex textures.
Features:
- Four granulation modules, each with 128 voices and dedicated lowpass filters
- MIDI control of all parameters
- Step sequencers for each module, for routing grains through built in delay, flange and overdrive effects
- Select parts of audio files to play grains from, with variable lengths and playback rates
- Linear fades applicable to individual grains, useful for removing popping noises and smoothing out textures.
- ReWire compatible

Demo of ag.granular.suite and preset mixpad
This is a short demo of the ag.granula.suite, which is a collection of Max/Msp patches for generalised granular sound processing written using FTM/Gabor libraries (developed at IRCAM) and encapsulated as Jamoma modules. The ag.presetmixpad module is used here to control preset interpolation of ag.granular.control. Granular synthesizer for iOS
Curtis Heavy, first Granular Synthesizer for iPhone, from app maker The Strange Agency LLC. Now there is Curtis for iPad version 2.0. The first granular synthesizer for the iPhone comes to the iPad.
Granular synthesis works by combining many tiny grains of sound from an existing recording, creating new sounds with the texture of the original, now with endless temporal possibilities. Play the sound forward, backward, or even a single point. Unlike scratching a record, pitch doesn’t depend on how quickly you move through the recording. Try with spoken word, singing, synths. Sonic Charge has revealed details about the upcoming µTonic 3.0 update.
One week left of 2010, which means one week left before the first major µTonic upgrade in over five years. I thought today would be a good day to reveal a bit more about the upcoming version 3.0.
The primary motivation behind this upgrade is to transform µTonic into a more dynamic instrument, without sacrificing its simplicity or drastically alter its “trademark sound”. We’ve always been proud of how µTonic sounds, and our intention has never been to turn it into a MegaTonic. If you are expecting to see four oscillators with sample playback and granular delay effects on top, you will be disappointed. Instead, you are going to see a set of well-balanced new features for exploring sounds, building patterns and performing live with µTonic. Features that will bring the best out of the beast.
We have already revealed that the upgrade is free and will feature the much requested support for “MIDI Program Changes” and “MIDI-file drag and drop”. I will now reveal another significant addition: “Morph”. “Morph” lets you transform all eight drum patches simultaneously from one point to another. This feature can be used both for performance (think: dramatic build-ups), for editing (think: finding semi-random sounds, “Synplant style”) or for crazy loony fun experiments (think: what would it sound like if I morph the kick to a snare and the snare to a kick, back and forth?).
A sound-file says more than a thousand words so I pulled a random preset from our big preset-bag (“EE Flat Lines”) and made a quick little arrangement with three different morph configurations. Enjoy.
