Showcasing the WMD Gamma Wave Source

August 14, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Showcasing the WMD Gamma Wave Source

The WMD Gamma Wave Source is a dual digital wavetable VCO that can create millions of timbres using onboard digital “effects”.

The Controls

1V/Oct – Pitch input, used with standard 1 Volt per Octave keyboards and MIDI-CV converters. 0-5 volt input.

Pitch 1 & 2 – Controls the relative pitch per channel.

WT 1 & 2 Select – Select the desired wave table from the chart. 256 are available, each producing a different sound. Click for the table chart.

Out 1 & 2- Oscilator section output, each puts out +-2.5V/ 5Vpp signal.

The Effects Section

The GWS has four effects pipelines. Two for each oscilator. The Routing table selects how the oscillators interact with the effects pipelines.

FX Select Knob – Pushing this knob in will select the column that the knob is adjusting. Turning it will adjust the LEDs in the select column and will alter the Routing or Effects selection.

FX Para 1 & 2 – These knobs control the FX parameter for the oscillator section. Each effect has a specific parameter that is controlled by this knob. Adujust to taste.

Para CV & Attenuation Knob – This is a CV input for modulating and controlling the effects on the oscillator. Press the WaveTable Select knob to activate CV control per oscillator section. The LED will light when CV control is active. The FX Para knob will adjust the center or edges of the CV control depending on the selected effect.

Effects Table – These are the available effects, they are all created mathematically using 8 bit processing. The result is generally lo-fi and edgy, but smooth fat sounds are also possible.

In this video:

Here’s a little Kraftwerk-like jam showcasing the WMD Gamma Wave Source wavetable oscillator module.

Our TR-909 Rim Out is clocking the Kilpatrick K4815 Pattern Generator and one side of a Livewire Dual Bissell Generator as a simple Attack/Decay envelope generator.

The pitch CV of the K4815 is running to the other side of the Dual-Bissel, using it to generate portamento. This is much more fun than your typical portamento as you have control of up and down glide rates.

The new Critter and Guitari Pocket Piano GR is being played using its new mono glide mode, which sounds really nice!

For filters on the Gamma we’re using a Division 6 Filtaire, modulated by the Livewire Vulcan’s sinewave, and a Metasonix R-54. We’re also using a Metasonix r-51 as our VCA and the Flight Of Harmony ‘Sound of Shadows’ karaoke delay.

A Day Of Beautiful Synthesizers

Lots of modular goodies in this video :-). In case you are wondering what that wooden keyboard is -Tetrazzi is the newest incarnation of the Organus series, a mandala of analog oscillator circuits that can cross-modulate to form the empire of infinite circuitry known as pure sonic chaos. The tetrazzi boards shall be assembled by machine in Colorado, they will be perfect, and sonde-tested here in the workshop in Baltimore. All you need to complete it is four piezo barres, four bottons, four knobs, two output jacks, twelve studdes of brass, and a battery clip; all the hard stuff having already been done by a machine man!

A MuffWiggler meet-up for Irish modulators. A small friendly affair with some beautiful instruments. If only everyday could be like that :)

OSC Physics Demo

OSC Physics sending data to Max/MSP and Ableton Live.
Max receives OSC messages from the iPad and visualizes and converts it midi. Midi messages are sent to Ableton Live to control audio effects.

Nice patching with the CGS01 Sub Oscillator and Harmonic Sequencer

June 12, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Nice patching with the CGS01 Sub Oscillator and Harmonic Sequencer

A demonstration of a patch involving the CGS01 Sub Oscillator and Harmonic Sequencer. It is generating the two voices heard at first. The I mixed in a few other voices coming from the Q960 and Q119 sequencers. The sequencers are shifted by the events going on in the CGS01 unit.
I recorded a tune with this patch as a basis but I thought the patch in itself was pretty fun so I made a video of it for people to see.

Pittsburgh Modular Generator Noise Demo

http://youtu.be/ipIu8u4pIxo

This is a demo of the Pittsburgh Modular Generator synthesizer module. The Generator is a dual oscillator built around two triangle core, wide range, periodic waveform generators. Ideal as the basis for tuned percussion/noise, abrasive amplitude, frequency and timbral modulation. Tones, drones and textures. As a multipurpose signal generator, Generator can provide the basis of a wide range of complex sounds from drums to atonal, nintendo zipper/fart noises. This module was made for FM madness.

The Generator is modulated by a Doepfer A-145 LFO.

Buchla 259e Mod Oscillator Exploration

Testing what the Mod oscillator sounds like, raw and modulated, through the 292e in filter mode, VCA mode and both. Modulation proved to be quite hard but I liked the sound of the whole thing and as usual, there are gems to be found in there!

Thor Oscillator Types

March 17, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Thor Oscillator Types

Synth School enters its final and most advanced device starting this week. Strap in and get ready because we’re about to tackle the Thor Polysonic Synthesizer. Thor is called “polysonic” because it offers a smorgasbord of various oscillator types, filter types, and signal routing options.

This week we’ll be focusing on the first major oscillator types in Thor. Each oscillator has a specific synth technology behind it and each one has a particular sound that will be suitable for different uses. If you’ve found yourself relying on presets for Thor or if you tend to go straight to the analog oscillator because it’s familiar to you, you’ll definitely want to get to know these other oscillators. They’ll expand your sonic palette and ramp up your sound design chops.

Buchla 200e Randomness Experiment

March 16, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Buchla 200e Randomness Experiment

A simple “controlled randomness” experiment wherein three oscillators randomly change pitch with each new trigger via the Source of Uncertainty. The pulsing is achieved from the ring modulator and, of course, the filter sweep is touch controlled.

Fancy a 6 oscillator synth?

March 8, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Fancy a 6 oscillator synth?

Filthpig is a monstrous, six oscillator hybrid synthesizer with an extreme potential for tweakability. Geared towards drones, noise, sirens and circuit-bent style glitching, Filthpig employs two full, three oscillator synth sections — one to produce sound and the other to act as a dedicated modulation source. Each section contains two tuning controls, a modulation depth knob, a waveform selector (five waveforms) and an amplitude envelope for each oscillator as well as a 3 x 3 modulation matrix that lets the output of any oscillator modulate any other oscillator (including itself). These modulation matrices also contain sync switches, and the modulator part of the synth also links oscillator output to the pitch values for the sound-producing section. Although a monosynth at heart, Filthpig also has the ability to be switched into a three voice poly mode for added functionality, and also has two cascaded filters (hicut and then locut) for tone shaping. Whether you are an experimentalist or just like crazy sounds, Filthpig is sure to crawl out of the garbage can and into your heart (where it will undoubtedly lay eggs and die).
