June 20, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on SynthStation music production app for both iPhone or iPod Touch

Akai Professional, the name synonymous with music production, announces the immediate availability of the SynthStation music production app for both iPhone or iPod Touch in the iTunes App Store. SynthStation also works on the iPad. SynthStation transforms an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into a portable music production studio. While the SynthStation app is powerful enough for professional musicians, virtually anyone can use it to easily create music. Built around Akai Professional’s history in synthesis and drawing on the company’s newest MINIAK synth, the SynthStation app sounds great and offers wide-ranging sonic flexibility with its virtual analog synthesis. The app gives musicians three synthesizers for creating melodies, chords and bass lines. For creating melodic and accompaniment parts, the SynthStation contains an on-screen keyboard complete with an arpeggiator and an XY control interface for expressive control of key parameters.

SynthStation also contains over 50 drum kits containing all the classic sounds of the past, legendary MPC samples and most popular modern samples. An onscreen MPC-style pad interface offers a trusted method of drum performance, while individual sample controls for Pitch and Volume enable tweaking the drums to fit the mix just right.

SynthStation contains a full mixing section to provide immediate control over the individual synth and drum parts. Adjust volume levels, mute tracks or route instruments to the internal effects processor to quickly create dynamic and engaging mixes.

SynthStation users can create and save sequences and complete songs. Once sequences have been programmed and organized, SynthStation can record a performance of the song capturing all modulation, mixing and keyboard playing. Through a WIFI connection, download both an audio (.WAV) and MIDI file of the performance for further editing, or uploading online and sharing newly composed tracks with others.

“The SynthStation app transforms the iPhone or iPod Touch into a professional musical workstation in a streamlined, all-in-one program,” said Adam Cohen, Director of Business Development, Akai Professional.

The SynthStation app is available now from the iTunes App Store for $9.99 US.

Gakken SX-150

June 20, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Gakken SX-150

This video, via DINSync, demonstrates modifications to the Gakken SX-150 synthesizer – a cheap analog synth that can be easily hacked:

The Gakken SX-150, a stylophone styled analog that can be found on ebay for $40. The machine has to be assembled, but there’s no soldering involved. It’s just a matter of putting the PCB in the case and connecting the power line, pretty simple stuff really. It’s very much a gimmick but since it really is a true analog it’s fairly easy to modify it into something useful.

Details on the hacks at the DINSync site.

Phazeform Volume 2 : The mothership of Casio synthesis

June 20, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Phazeform Volume 2 : The mothership of Casio synthesis

Phazeform Volume 2 : The mothership of Casio synthesis, the CZ-1 was a remarkable piece of technology in its day, emulated by other leading synthesizer manufacturers. Casio’s CZ line of Phase Distortion synthesizers are incredibly unique devices that used digital synthesis without a filter as opposed to traditional analog subtractive synthesis with a filter. The CZ line used phase distortion to somewhat simulate an analog filter, it had in total eight different waveforms: as well as the standard sawtooth, square, and pulse waveforms, it had a special double sine waveform, a half-sine waveform, and three waveforms with simulated filter resonance: resonant sawtooth, triangle, and trapezoidal waveforms.

The Casio SK-1 is a classic low fidelity consumer keyboard from 1985 and arguably the first toy sampler. Puremagnetik captured all of the uniquely kitsch and useful factory tones and processed voices with the gritty 9.83 khz / 8 bit sampler. You can bask in the raw nostalgic tones of this time machine and make use of these modernized instruments by using native effects in Ableton, Kontakt and Logic.

Price: Phazeform Volume 2 is now available for Puremagnetik subscribers. Subscriptions start at $5.75 USD/Month.

Bel Canto is back on stage after 20 years

June 18, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Bel Canto is back on stage after 20 years

The original members of Norwegian band Bel Canto have decided to team up for a special performance at the Døgnvill festival in their old hometown Tromsö above the polar circle.

Geir Jenssen left Anneli Drecker and Nils Johansen in 1990 after the first two masterpiece albums “White-out Conditions” and “Birds of Passage”, to release music under names like Biosphere and Bleep.

– We are talking about doing old stuff from the two first albums and songs from the period 1990-2002. And we might also play some unreleased – and maybe even new stuff. It is too early to say now, Anneli Drecker says.

– We contributed with an unrelased track for the compilation “Maskindans”, which is a tribute to Norwegian synth bands from the 80:s. We discovered that we have many unreleased tracks and demos that could actually work today.

Anneli is currently on the roads as a vocalist in Röyksopp, a band also originating from Tromsö.

The Døgnvill festival takes place on September 2-4 and the program also includes A-ha, The Prodigy and Ozzy Osbourne.

Filter Research refill for Reason

June 18, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Filter Research refill for Reason

Filter Research 2 is a continuation of the concept of complex effect devices built in the Reason environment. Far from just simple reverb or chorus devices, each patch in Filter Research 2 is a creative effect that will supercharge even the most bland mix or instrument.

The original Filter Research has yet to be matched in terms of quality effects devices for Reason. Filter Research 2 builds on this strong foundation, but exceeds its predecessor in every way. New this time, are effect patches controllable by keyboard MIDI input; as well as a wide variety of sequenced effects with inbuilt patterns; of course, a huge selection of filters that go beyond LP/BP/HP are present and accounted for. Ducking delays, crunchy envelope-followed distortion devices, and spectral processors are just some of the other highlights.

In addition to the perpetual Nucleus SoundLab focus on quality – including detailed documentation, unique patches and fully-mapped Combinator controls – Filter Research 2 introduces the Epic Combinator. These are a special category of patch that take Reason sound design beyond even our own high standards. These patches are detailed and flexible enough to compare to standalone VST effects plugins, or hardware effect devices. Not only that, but they feature an absolutely massive variety of customized Thor controls to complement the standard Combinator rotaries and buttons. Finally, each Epic Combinator is described in detail in video documentation – so you can make the most of their possibilities. Make sure to watch one of the video examples of this documentation for more info on Epic Combinators!

Overdrive and amplifier effects

June 18, 2010 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Overdrive and amplifier effects

MANTRA OVERDRIVE by BLACKOUT EFFECTORS: equally capable of invoking the sacred sounds of a classically refined overdrive AND summoning wickedly raunchy drive, with more crunch on tap than the “overdrive” moniker usually entails. With such a wide palette of tones and character the MANTRA will feel just as at home at the feet of the stalwart blues crowd as it will the quintessential rock & roll protagonists. The MANTRA utilizes amp-like circuit architecture, with multiple cascaded MOSFET and JFET gain stages to insure the most natural, touch-sensitive overdrive conditions possible and a seemingly endless range of clean-up with your guitar’s volume knob. We burned a lot of midnight oil to make sure that the MANTRA could get down with vintage-type, low output single coils and hot humbucker pickups alike. From gently fingerpicked melodic phrases to bludgeoning riffs that you’ll want to play over and over and over…More info and to purchase CLICK !
