Modular: Pygmalions Ate My McLaughlin
A further development of the LFO modulating a VCO’s waveform to modulate a Miniwave effect. In this case it’s an SSL Quad LFO modulating the pitch of a synced Q106 VCO running at audible speeds.
That VCO then alters the cutoff of a highpass filter into which a second Q106 is fed, which then powers the miniwave.
At various points playing with the octave settings on the slaved oscillator. A Q960 sequencer provides the basic pitch while its second channel determines the waveform selection on the Miniwave.
The horrendous jet-engine crescendo is derived from the resulting cacophony being fed into a Boss SX-700 effects processor with lots of chorus and delay at heavy regen settings.

MIDI stands for “Musical Instrument Digital Interface” and describes a protocol for music devices to communicate with each other. This is done with so-called “Event Messages”, which include data about Key Pitch, Key Velocity, Aftertouch, etc. When a musical instrument receives MIDI Events from a MIDI keyboard or sequencer, it interprets them and creates its sound accordingly. That sound might be anything and depends on the instrument and your settings. A MIDI sequence might play a piano sound or a phat dubstep wobble-bass on a synthesizer. So MIDI doesn’t transmit any audible sound, but just control data.

The Viennese duo Stefan Poiss and Martin Mejzlik are the band members behind the project LOOMEC. Their music could be best described as Electro-Pop with rocking influences. The lyrics are changing between German and English, including pun, a sharp tongue and the typical Viennese melancholy.
LOOMEC is not only the name of the project. It is also an attitude to life of both band members. LOOMEC show us new things. LOOMEC indicates with a special mix of humour, clear statements and sometimes only with the staging of the contrary, that we should have more joy in our hearts. The theme: We will find the good! And it looms with enlightening character! — Short and simple: LOOMEC!

Tempest and Analog Four: “Analog Together…”
Tempest and Analog Four analog together. After a few months break I make this afternoon a simple “analog together”. Dave Smith with Elektron, both most creative machines.
Miniwave Highpass modulation
An implementation of the Bob Borries modulation trick to mimic PWM on a Miniwave.
Simply put, an LFO (or EG, or other modulation source) sweeps the cutoff on a ramp (rising sawtooth) wave being fed into a highpass filter. The output of the highpass HPF drives the Miniwave input.
Changing the waveshape of the ramp changes the spectral content of the Miniwave, lending a PWM style tonal sweep.
Not everything sounds great, but they beauty of it is that one can go from subtle sweeps to nails-on-a-chalkboard grind with relatively little effort.
iPad: UltraPhaser – new flexible phaser effect
UltraPhaser is an extremely flexible phaser effect, with a unique user interface. With very low latency and stereo input, the wide range of phasing effects can be applied to all kinds of input sounds, from guitar, bass and keyboard to full mixes and electronic setups. Full Audiobus compatibility allows for the interconnection with other iPad apps.

Little Nemo – Seconds

Another day, another 80sObscurities feature for all of you beautiful people. Our 80s artist du jour is fabulous French band Little Nemo. Formed in 1983 by Olivier Champeau (vocals, keyboards) and Vincent Legallo (vocals, guitar) and named for the titular character in character in American cartoonist Winsor McCay’s “Little Nemo in Slumberland”, the band created music that ran the gamut from gothic ethereal to new romantic to dark wave. (Their final album, 1992’s “The World Is Flat”, was misdirected, quasi-commercial pop rock that didn’t register well with their target audience – whoever that might have been – and has been largely discredited and discounted by the band’s fan base.)
They debuted in 1986 on a split cassette with the band Rain Culture, who promptly disappeared immediately afterwards. While the production of their self-released first album “Past and Future” (also issued on cassette) left a lot to be desired, forgivably, Little Nemo’s compositions showed significant promise. In 1988, they were joined by Nicolas Dufaure on bass and after again issuing another record on their own – the “Private Life” 12” – the band signed to esteemed indie label Lively Art. It was through this association that Little Nemo achieved their most widespread success.
They, along with label mates Asylum Party and Mary Goes Round, defined what became known as the “Touching Pop” movement, a musical style categorized as much by how it made the listener feel as by any mode of composition or instrumentation. The movement was a fleeting moment in time; by the early 90s, each of those bands – and the label itself – faded into oblivion. Champeau would rechristen himself as “Doctorolive” and maintain a level of visibility within the techno and house scenes through the middle part of the last decade, but today’s track – the 1990 version of a song that first appeared on the band’s 1987 debut – shows the artist at his 80sObs apex.
