Kaivo – new semi-modular software synthesizer

March 6, 2014 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Kaivo – new semi-modular software synthesizer

Madrona Labs has released Kaivo, a semi-modular software synthesizer that combines two ways of making sound: granular synthesis and physical modeling.

Developer Randy Jones says:

“Today we release Kaivo, our new software synthesizer. ‘Kaivo’ is Finnish for ‘well,’ as in, a deep well of sounds, and I’ve been working on deepening that well over the last month or so. Kaivo’s models include metal, nylon and gut strings, different sizes of chimes and springs (yes, springs), wooden instrument bodies, membranes and metal plates. ”

Kaivo1.0

Kaivo brings ‘some of the latest academic research in physical modeling to a patchable package for the first time.’ Mathematically speaking, its finite difference time domain (FDTD) models let the player affect the internal vibrations inside the instrument at any point. This allows for a fine degree of realistic detail, like the bridge rattles on a “gut string” model, for example. Developers say Kaivo is also designed to apply this subtlety to more abstract creations.

Every time a model is triggered, it makes a slightly different sound due to the initial conditions when the sound starts. This subtle variety can quickly give a very lifelike quality to sounds that would be tedious to recreate with sampling. Kaivo has eight different types of tuned resonators, including strings, chimes and springs, each with its own complex response to sound. As for instrument bodies, there are four, including two wooden body models, a metal plate, and a frame drum—all true 2D models.

1960’s Stylophone Demonstration

March 5, 2014 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on 1960’s Stylophone Demonstration

Just a short demonstration of a 1960’s Stylophone using the camera audio and then line out audio. These early models have no volume control and a vibrato that sounds more akin to pulse width modulation. Plus they are much bassier via line out than the speaker due to a passive low pass filter over the output. I have it for sale in my Etsy shop here:

Computer Orchestra is a crowdsourcing platform that allows users to create and conduct their own orchestra. They can choose to upload their own music or download samples to integrate into their formation. With a simple interface, they assign the chosen samples to each post. They can also arrange detection zones, that allow them to order the “musicians” to play, using various gestures. Once their orchestra is configured, they can direct it with the movements of their body.

Have a look at the full project on:

Kinect detects the director’s movements and transmits the data to Processing via the SimpleOpenNI library.

Processing then sends a signal to the corresponding computers via wifi. These then play the samples that are assigned to them and generate a visual derived from the outgoing sound.

In this manner, the ‘musician-screens’ not only send sound back to the director, but also visual feedback.

8 step sequencer module with reverse, random, and offset — Sagittronics

March 5, 2014 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on 8 step sequencer module with reverse, random, and offset — Sagittronics

This is a sequencer that Charlie Slick built with an Atmega arduino chip.

The chip basically replaces the CD4017-or the like-but adds a few features like gate controlled reverse and random. The modules also has an offset input so you can use it like an arpeggio. There is no gate output but it does have an externally trigger reset.

Soulsby Synthesizers has released the Atmegatron – a new 8-bit monosynth. It’s the debut product from Soulsby Synthesizers.

The Atmegatron combines the sounds of 1980s home computers with the flexibility and power of a modern synthesizer.

The Atmegatron is built on the open source Arduino platform. This means that the synthesis engine can be completely changed by uploading software to the synth. One minute it’s a monosynth, the next it’s a drum machine. Soulsby Synths plans to relese new and completely free software versions over the coming months.

Features:

  • 32 waveforms
  • 15 digital filter types
  • 2 ADSR envelopes
  • 1 LFO with 16 waveforms
  • an arpeggiator with 15 patterns and
  • loads of fx including phaser, distortion and the unique Wavecrusher.
  • 16 preset sounds and unlimited preset expandability via the Atmegatron Librarian software available for Mac or PC.

The Atmegatron is available in two versions:

  • Atmegatron Complete – £255 ex VAT & delivery.
  • Atmegatron Synthesizer
  • Power Supply
  • Printed 32 page colour manual
  • Quick reference guide
  • The Atmegatron Complete is housed in a beautiful white aluminium chassis with real walnut side panels.

Atmegatron PCB – £127 ex VAT & delivery.

  • Atmegatron Synthesizer PCB
  • Power Supply
  • Quick reference guide
  • The Atmegatron PCB comes with nylon pillars to keep the PCB raised from its resting surface. The PCB is perfect for programmers and hackers, but is not suitable for outside of the home due to its fragility.
