Odd free VSTs up for grabs
Necromare has released some bizarre new free VST’s for Windows.
The include:
- Free VST Turntable – is a sample-based instrument featuring sounds of an old turntable
- The Audience – A VST full of foley-type laughter, boos, stomps and cheering
- Bent Furby – glitch effects and bent phrases based on a bent Furby

Korg Releases Free File Conversion Software
Korg has announced the release of its AudioGate software for free for all content creators and listeners alike (as long as they have an active Twitter account). This file conversion, editing and authoring software had previously only been available bundled with Korg’s MR series of DSD recorders. Here’s all the details directly from Korg…
AudioGate enables the real-time playback of DSD/SACD files on any computer system, with any audio hardware. Powerful dithering algorithms are provided, along with editing tools such as divide, merge, normalize, fade-in/fade-out and DC cut. Users can convert from 5.6 MHz or 2.8 MHz 1-bit audio files to any other format, including 16- or 24-bit PCM (up to 192 kHz sample rates), Apple Lossless or AAC, FLAC, Broadcast WAV (up to 32-bit floating supported) and even MP3 formats. It can be used to burn audio CDs, and the newer DSD Disc format (2.8 MHz sample rate), which can be played back on a growing number of devices, such as Sony Playstation®s and Vaio computers.
By releasing this software for free, Korg is providing a solution for all audio content owners and creators to deliver their art in the highest resolution possible. By giving everyone the tools they need to enjoy high resolution audio and to repurpose it for any device or situation, the market can offer their customers content that is closest to the aural experience the artist had when performing and recording it. Game Boy style music sequencer
Oliver Wittchow has released Nanoloop Lite (App Store link) – a free version of his Game Boy style music sequencer.
Nanoloop was originally developed for Game Boy (first release in 1999) and is a popular platform for mobile music creation. The new iPhone version presented here follows the same basic structure and design concept but otherwise it is an entirely new program. It does not simulate the Game Boy’s sound or other functions but has been fully optimised for the iPhone’s capabilities.
Lite Version Limitations:
- Projects can not be saved or sent, only the current status is kept in memory. The current project can be exported to the full version (if installed on the same device).
- Sample memory is limited to five files.
Otherwise, the lite version is fully functional and shares all features of the full version:
- Straight, minimalistic graphical interface
- Pattern-based stepsequencer
- 6 channels, each can be synth or sampler
- Song editor with loop function
- Synth with envelope, filter, lfo etc
- Sample on the fly
- Re-sampling
Synth
The simple but powerful synthesizer allows to create a great bandwidth of sounds, including beats, noises, basses and pads. Available synthesis types are:
- rectangular wave with filter
- FM
- LFSR noise generator
Each synth channel is two-voice polyphonic and an additional stereo effect can be applied.
Sampler
- Samples of 1 sec length (44 kHz, mono) can not just be used in a drum-machine style, but also be pitched and played as notes.
- Samples can be recorded via microphone (iPhone only), headset microphone (iPhone, iPod touch 2nd gen only) and from nanoloop’s own sound output.

AKWF Waveforms – single cycled
Adventure Kid has released a free collection of single-cycle waveforms for wavetable synths, AKWF Waveforms:
I have been making and collecting one cycle waveforms for years. They have been one of my best weapons to use when making sounds.
If you have a wavetable synthesizer that can load single cycle waveforms you might find them useful as well.
If you are familiar with basic subtractive synthesizers you probably know the saw, square, sinus and triangle shape that are the most common shapes a oscillator can produce pretty well. Single cycle waveforms are tiny audio files (.wave) that a synthesizer can read to use as oscillator shapes.
What it means is new sounds. Some kind of grey area between sampling and synthesis. A raw waveform is very rarely what makes a whole sound but you can see it as presets for oscillators. Happy sound designing!
