Teaser – Genome MIDI remix pads
Demo of the ‘Remix pads’ coming in version 1.1.0
White Noise Software has announced an update to Genome MIDI Sequencer, its software sequencer for the iPad. Here’s what’s new in Genome MIDI Sequencer 1.1.0:
- Fixes for playhead visual positioning issues
- ‘Create’ option for Grooves (create a groove template from a pattern, such as recorded MIDI notes).
- Remix Pads
- File management – Delete, email, Open in… (for opening files in other apps including Dropbox)
- Improvements to Zooming – Zooming in and out should work a little better now in general. When zoomed out, the view now smoothly zooms in instead of abruptly zooming
- New zoom mode. In additioned to the standard ‘fixed’ zoom (where X and Y scale is locked together), there’s an ‘advanced’ mode that lets you zoom X and Y are independently zoomable.
- OMAC App Fast switch – This allows you to quickly switch between compatible apps (not every app supports this yet) via a menu in Genome. The button for this is on the sequencer page.
- Important Change: Genome’s virtual port is no longer ‘on’ by default. You have to enable it via the config menu. The reason for this is that this is a frequent point of confusion for users. Having a virtual port can lead to issues where apps get connected twice (resulting in doubled tempos and other weird cases). It’s only necessary for Genome to have a virtual MIDI port when other apps don’t have one of their own. Only a few apps _don’t_ have virtual ports (such as Animoog), but for the majority of apps you won’t need it on.
- Bugfixes and stability improvements
Not in 1.1.0 but being worked on:
- MIDI Learn (for binding controllers to Patterns and Song steps) – I had wanted to get this in 1.1.0, but there are important bug fixes that need to get out now. This will be one of the first things I implement for the next update.
Music Thing Random Sequencer
DIY shift register sequencer module for Eurorack modular synth. Full details: musicthing.co.uk/modular/?page_id=21
Music Thing Random Sequencer:
The Random Sequencer is a circuit that produces clocked randomly changing control voltages. These can also be locked into loops that repeat every 8, 16 or 32 steps.
This is an open hardware project – all the project files (Eagle CAD projects, Gerbers PCB files, a Mouser BOM and Illustrator/PDF front panel designs) are available on this page, covered by a Creative Commons Attribution Share-a-like license, which allows for commercial use.
This is a relatively advanced DIY project, and I’m not able to provide support. I am not selling PCBs, kits or finished modules, but hopefully all the information you’d need to get your own is here.

Gotharman’s Little deFormer – A few presets
Playing back a few of the included presets on my Little deFormer Limited Edition. All sounds are made with the included sampling bank. The sound is recorded directly from the Little deFormers output. I hope you will enjoy this:) More info:

Granular effects processor with sampler and sequencer
Gotharman’s Little deFormer combines a granular effects processor with special effects like TimeStretcher, Step-Granulator and PitchShaper and more usual effects like Reverb, delay, distortion, compressor, filters and bit manipulation, with some special parameters, with a 100 minutes sampler and a step sequencer. A MIDI Note Randomizer is also included.
Both the samplings and external gear, connected to it’s 2 audio input can be effected. A complete list of effects can be found in the specs section. Watch and hear Little deFormer in action, in the video’s section. I have planned to use the Little deFormer as a platform for engineering new effects, so additional effects will be added now and then, which will be available as free downloads on this site. These updates will be available as MIDI sysex files in”.syx” format, and you will need a program like Midi-Ox to download these to Little deFormer.
The 4-note polyphonic sampler makes it possible to record your own samplings directly from the 2 audio inputs, or re-sample it’s audio output. Samplings are stored in FLASH RAM for instant recall, without any loading times. Up to 100 minutes/999 samplings can be kept. Start and end points can be changed in realtime and modulated, and it also has functions like AutoChop, for a conveniant and easy way to cut up long samplings. Each sampling has it’s own Phaze effect and filter with LPF, BPF, BPF8, HPF, ADD, BEF, BASS and LO-FI modes, and a filter mix parameter. It is also possible to adjust the filter response, to create filter types, that have never been heard before. The Little deFormer comes loaded with samplings of other Gotharman gear.
The Little deFormer comes with an expansion port. Right now, only an analogue expansion box, that adds CV inputs and trigger inputs/outputs are available, but it is my plan, to add more expansions later.
HyperTunes – new iOS music sequencer that frees composers from the multitrack timeline
Exploded Views Media has announced HyperTunes, a new iOS music sequencer app that frees composers from the multitrack timeline.
HyperTunes lets composers/songwriters express music directly in terms of musical structure, such as verse-chorus-bridge song forms. It also lets them collect and organize any number of musical patterns, song fragments, and songs within the app, all ready to “plug and play” in a new song with just a few touches.
Unlike other music studio software, in which songs are recorded and edited on a linear, multitrack timeline, HyperTunes represents song sections and instrument parts as discrete elements that can be readily navigated and reorganized even on a small screen, even one-handed. This structured approach helps users focus on the big picture as they compose – like trying out different variations of a song form – rather than getting bogged down in note-by-note tweaking on the timeline. Ready access to virtually all of one’s musical ideas and assets means new songs get off the ground quickly through the use of stock parts, and allows ideas not used in one project to be easily recycled in later projects, rather than getting lost and forgotten.
“I’ve owned lots of Digital Audio Workstations and hardware sequencers, and recently several mobile music studios too. They’re all fantastic for recording and mixing, but none of them let me try different song ideas as quickly and easily as I wanted,” explained Exploded Views Media founder James Mahoney. “I wanted to explore song variations with the same fluidity that I can explore melodies or chord progressions on a musical instrument.”
HyperTunes is designed to be as accessible to non-musicians and beginning composers as it is powerful for seasoned pros.
HyperTunes features
- Flexible creative process – Start from a song form and plug in instrument parts later, the way a painter might sketch out a piece before filling in the details. Or, work in a more exploratory manner, adding one new section at a time. Rearrange the entire song in one step, just by selecting a different song form from the extensive built-in menu, or by typing in your own custom form.
- Intelligent sequencing – Assign an instrument part to a section and HyperTunes automatically transposes it to fit; reorder sections and it automatically merges pickup notes to make the transitions seamless.
- Powerful analysis tool – Rapidly break up existing songs into their component sections, so that you can freely rearrange them, repurpose their parts in new songs, mash them up with other songs, or simply as way of learning from great songs.
- General MIDI format – Import original content and third party pattern libraries in General MIDI format. Export arrangements as General MIDI for performance, or for further production using other tools. More music formats are planned for future versions.
HyperTunes for iOS is available to purchase for $9.99 USD.

Spectralis groovebox +
a microkorg xl pad sound
sequenced by the spectralis
The Spectralis is the first “GrooveBox”, which combines the LIVE usability of the latest digital technology with the best elements of proven analog technology. We also have thrown in some other cool features which give the synthesizer much more flexibility than anything seen before. While traditional Sequencers are limited to playing back rhythm patterns and tone sequences, the step Sequencer of the SPECTRALIS makes possible highly complex sound creations which opens up completely new worlds of sound when used in connection with the programmable FIXED FILTER BANK. In addition to its outstanding analog sound possibilities the SPECTRALIS also provides DSP based sound creation, which takes care of all the ancillary needs for drumsounds and polyphonic voices. This sound creation is 48 voice and offers killer drum sounds, creamy pads and a lot of other goodies.
Genome Sequencer MASSIVE MIDI Jam!
Background data:
Finally getting my brain in to the GENOME Midi Sequencer, by White Noise Audio. It is VERY COOL!
Using network MIDI, I’ve connected the iPad2 (running Genome/Arctic Keys/BS-16i/NLog Pro), to an iPhone 4 (running Sunrizer) and an iPod Touch (running Arctic Keys).
Also, via an iRig MIDI connector on the iPad, am sending a MIDI signal to a Moog Little Phatty as well. Can you believe this all works! I have a pretty strong WiFi signal, so the iPhone/iPod Touch work well and there isn’t any discernible latency.
Presumably I could run my other iPod touch as well, with a compatible virtual MIDI app. I also have a MIDI splitter box, so the idea of sending to more MIDI hardware is also a idea (or by chaining with MIDI THRU).
The possibilities are great with Genome!
