Granular synthesis processing
Dan Overholt’s Matrix synthesizer is a unique new instrument that gives users a 3-dimensional tactile interface to control sound.
According to Overholt, “Matrix provides a very intuitive method of manipulating sound with an amount of control that has never before been implemented in real-time.”
The Matrix generates musical output by mapping a performer’s expressive gestures to a variety of sonic parameters. It acts as an input device that directly manipulates the parameters of a synthesis engine (eg. additive, granular, wave-terrain…), or an effect alogrithm (eg. delay, reverb, filter-banks…) in response to the changing shape of the interactive surface.
One mapping uses the individual rods of the Matrix to directly control the digital waveform of a sound, thereby “sonically sculpting” the timbre of the sound.

This handmade electric musical instrument can change a oscillator pitch smoothly, depending on the place which you press down. Ribbon Controller was originally made as a kind of MOOG SYNTHESIZER’s controller in late 60’s. I made this following its example. And playing style is self-taught.
This ribbon controller hooked up to simple analogue oscillator. The frequency of the oscillator changes in the value of electric resistance. Electrically, This ribbon controller is just an electric variable resistance. Not a midi box.

New Foetus album on its way
There’s a new Foetus album on its way (the latest we heard was “August”, but you never know).
In the meantime, take a look at Hydroze Plus, a collaboration between JG Thirlwell and Fred Bigot. They have released a clear ten inch vinyl EP on French label Optical Sound. It’s a limited edition with packaging design by Thirlwell which is made “to resemble an anatomical text book with transparent layers”. A digital release will follow.
