On location in Hamburg with Wolfgang Palm
“On location in Hamburg with Wolfgang Palm” is a little ‘vintage style’ documentary we did in April 2010, showing Wolfgang Palm, former owner of the PPG Synthesizer company, inventor of the world’s first digital synthesizer and wavetable synthesis, in front of historic ‘PPG locations’ in Hamburg, talking about the old times… Directed & idea by CS.

Zen – a free universal presets manager for Windows VSTis
Big Tick Audio Software has introduced Zen, a free universal presets manager for Windows VSTis.
Zen loads in any host as a vsti, and acts as a loader for other vstis. So with Zen, you can search for “Rhodes piano” and get a list of all matching presets – regardless of the final vsti (Rhino, Zebra, Absynth…). When you select one of the presets in Zen, the corresponding vsti is automatically loaded to play the requested preset.
Many popular vstis are supported, including:
- U-he ACE
- Native Instrument’s Absynth 5
- Rob Papen Albino 3
- Anti’s Augur
- FullBucket Blooo
- Green Oak Crystal
- DiscoDSP Discovery, Discovery Pro, Phantom and Vertigo
- NuSofting daHornet
- TAL Elek7ro
- Wusik EVE
- Tone12 Firebird
- Smart Electronic Foorius
- Tone12 Gladiator
- Boris K. Intro
- Progress Audio Kinisis
- ConcreteFX Kubik
- SarVST LoganA
- FullBucket Mono/Fury
- TAL NoizeMaker
- FuzzPilz Oatmeal
- LinPlug Octopus
- Schwa Olga
- SonicProjects OPX-Pro
- Our own Rhino and RhinoCM
- Humanoid Sound System ScannedSynth
- Buchty SQ8L
- LennardDigital Sylenth1
- Ichiro Toda’s Synth1
- Image-Line Sytrus
- Cakewalk Triangle II
- FabFilter Twin II
- Vaz+
- U-he Zebra
- Cakewalk Z3ta+
Eventually Zen aims to categorize all available presets, for all vstis.
Zen synchronizes its own local database of presets with a master online database hosted at www.bigtickaudio.com – users get new presets daily, delivered right into their sequencer, already categorized.
Commercial presets designers can use Zen to send demo version of their presets to all potential customers.
Users can preview the presets in Zen, directly in the context of their track, and buy the presets they like with just one click. Presets can be bought individually, as opposed to purchasing a full bank of presets.

First live performance of the Nintendo DSi Music product “Rhythm Core Alpha”
This is the first live performance of the Nintendo DSi Music product “Rhythm Core Alpha”, performed live at the Kulak’s Woodshed open-mike night in April 2010.
All the music being played is being created live in front of the audience. Even the tune is written on the spot.
What’s unique about this application is that it emphasizes real-time production. Sound playback never stops during editing. The crowded interface packs some fairly powerful-looking features:
- A Drum Grid with 12 tracks x 64 beats x 122 sounds
- A Note Grid with 8 tracks x 64 beats x 166 sounds
- A Solo Mode that places six octaves of notes onscreen for playing
- A 1000-step pattern mode with chord, drum, and note modes, plus looping
- 7 velocity levels for everything (okay, not a lot, but that provides simple velocity control)
- Quite-nice scale mapping (see screenshots) to keep you in tune – and yes, it’s also possible to override them
See the video demonstrations below.
Pricing is 500 Nintendo Points, or US$5. Naturally, you’ll need to have a DSiWare-capable handheld in a location with access to the store, but assuming you’ve got a newer model, this is much easier than the homebrew route, and pricing is similar to iOS apps.
Alphatron delivers digital realms in various ways to achieve sounds far beyond
HG Fortune has announced the release of Alphatron, a new synth inspired by the idea of creating a synthesizer for bass and high sequences which can serve as a companion to Avatar ST’s pads, atmos and soundscapes.
Alphatron is not just a simple VA synthesizer, instead, in using a 3rd oscillator with digital waves of single cycle type, it offers a lot more variation. Thus it can do pretty good analog-style sounds reminiscent of the old Moog and Prophet days but also merge this with the digital realm in various ways to achieve sounds far beyond.
Also, this 3rd oscillator serves as sync master for oscillator 2 thus offering much more sonic flavour. Amplitude Modulation has got a dedicated adjustable output and uses oscillator 2 as the main source being modulated either by oscillator 1 or 3. Oscillator 1 is a polywave oscillator with up to 5 additional waves, so you might have something like Super Saw, Super Pulse, Super Ramp, etc.
Another highlight of Alphatron is the versatile step sequencer with 8 + 4 pattern slots which can be selected in real time for instant pattern switching. Setting Note Seq to off it can serve as step modulator. The Gate length can be modulated by sources. Two play modes: normal with adjustable number of steps or Step Variation, which is in fact another 16 step sequencer to set different number of steps to be played in succession. Loops can be set to repeat up to 4 times, and two alternating semitone offsets can be set, e.g. for each 2nd, 3rd or 4th loop. There are 8 pattern slots per patch and 4 global pattern slots which can be used for instant pattern changes. Current pattern can be copied and pasted to a selectable slot, with the global slots even among patches.
Main features (based on Pro version):
- 1 VA Oscillator with up to 6 poly waves for Saw, Ramp, Sine, Tri, and Pulse.
- 1 VA Oscillator with single waves as above plus white and pink noise, Sync slave.
- 1 Sample Oscillator with fairly typical digital waves (single cycle type) with different harmonic content, Sync master.
- 1 Amplitude Modulation with dedicated output.
- 1 24 dB resonant Low Pass filter with dedicated ADSR EG, 4 mixable mod sources.
- 1 VCA EG. Note: Both EG have 3 modes: exponential, reverse exponential, and linear; and optional control for Attack and Decay by velocity.
- 1 Booster or Exciter selectable.
- 1 Mystify with three selectable types (Brite, Soft, Dark).
- 1 BPM synced Delay with adjustable Offset controlled manually or by modsource, Pan.
- 1 Bass Boost.
- 1 Pan for undelayed signal.
- 1 small Reverb for adding some nice flavour.
- 1 Saturator.
- 1 main Volume.
- 3 x LFO, 1 x Duo LFO (with two waves and phase control for 2nd wave), 1 x S&H.
- 1 Pitch LFO with option to speed up or down the LFO speed.
- 16 Step Sequencer (with Shuffle) for notes and velocity plus mute buttons for each step. Includes 8 pattern slots per patch and 4 global pattern slots for instant changes.
- 3 Wheels.
- Aftertouch as selectable modsource.
- 8 Lazy buttons.
- 8 GUI variants selectable.
- 128 patches.
Both free and commercial versions are available. The major differences of Basic Free (less features):
- Only 64 patches.
- No Lazy buttons.
- Only 4 Seq Pattern per patch & 2 global Seq Pattern.
- 2 voices.
- No selectable GUI (instead there is a choice of four different dll to download).
- No patch select on GUI, but a silly scroller reminder not to forget to support the developer.
Pricing & Availability
Alphatron is available for Windows as a VST instrument plug-in. The commercial version costs €29.
Mark Ronson on how it is to work with Duran Duran
The biggest names in are featured on Ronson’s collaborative albums; he’s produced Macy Gray, Christina Aguilera, Amy Winehouse, Robbie Williams, Duran Duran, and Kanye West, and his accolades include a Brit for best male solo artist and a Grammy for best producer. The music producer, pop star, DJ is now bringing his contacts together for his next musical venture.
Revealed follows Ronson as he prepares to release his latest album, “Record Collection,” in September – featuring Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes and a track with Boy George, as well as hip-hop star Wiley. Ronson says it sprang from “four or five months of jamming with my favourite musicians in the world.” While working with Lady Gaga in 2007, the pop diva suggested Ronson take some singing lessons – and almost 3 years later he is due to get behind the mic himself for the first time.
NUDE records Heaven 17 and Being Boiled
German electronic band NUDE have released a radical new recording of Heaven 17’s classic 1982 hit single “Let Me Go” . Inspired by Heaven 17’s 1982 original, NUDE’s version is steeped in big beats and melodic hooks. The song, along with a re-recording of Human League’s “Being Boiled,”, will appear on their forthcoming second album, “Basic Guerrilla Moves”, to be released in October 2010. Four different mixes of NUDE’s “Let Me Go” are available throughout Europe via iTunes.
Devo at the Moogfest
Moog Music has announced that Devo will be the 2010 recipient of The Moog Innovation Award, to be presented to the band during MoogFest 2010 weekend, October 29-31 in Asheville, NC.
As part of this award, Moog Music will present Devo with a very special synthesizer, details of which will be revealed in the coming weeks.
Past recipients of the previously titled Moog Award include Keith Emerson, Herb Deutsch, Gershon Kingsley, Jan Hammer and Bernie Worrell.
Moog Music had this to say about Devo and the award in a statement:
“MoogFest is about shunning limitations, opening your mind and rejoicing in what’s next. MoogFest is about celebrating the marriage of technology and art, fearlessly embracing the future while respecting the genre-definers of the past. That’s why we created the Moog Innovation Award, to celebrate artists that helped to catapult pop music into the future and commemorate those artists that boldly burst through established norms to pave the way forward. That’s the spirit of Bob Moog and that’s the essence of the Moog Innovation Award.
The first recipient of the Moog Innovation Award is DEVO and we feel that they are a perfect representation of innovative sound-sculpting and genre-defying electronic music. Like Bob Moog, DEVO enthusiastically charted their own course and thus dramatically affected pop culture because of it. Not to mention the fact that they used Moog instruments to create their inimitable sound. MoogFest and the Moog Innovation Award is the perfect way to pay homage to Bob Moog and his adopted hometown of Asheville, NC where he raised his kids, gave birth to some of his greatest inventions and where he re-established the company that bears his name and carries on his legacy, Moog Music.” – Emmy Parker, Moog Music
Devo will play MoogFest 2010, a three-day festival celebrating the innovative vision of Bob Moog. MoogFest 2010 tickets are on sale now.
