This is part of a complex pattern sequencer. It’s been in the works for quite a while and we finished our first working prototype last night. It’s based on Rob Hordijk’s benjolin circuit with a bunch of tweaks.

Odd free VSTs up for grabs
Necromare has released some bizarre new free VST’s for Windows.

Sample Based instrument. So I was sitting in my studio when my eye caught an old turntable in the corner. I thought…what the hell. I hooked it up to my mixed and started recording whatever sounds I could get off of it and that is what is presented here for you. Please enjoy and I hope you can find a use for this VST. New album from Thomas Dolby
Thomas Dolby is releasing his new album in EP segments to members of his fan club the Flat Earth Society. Membership is free and you can join up here.
He’s said on his blog that each segment will have different styles. The first EP was Amerkana which released in June and had a bluegrass vibe. In a recent newsletter Thomas discussed the styles of the first two segments:

A small demo showing basic functionality of my new ipad app “synthmate”.
“This panel exposes the synth parameters available for editing and assigning to the y-axis. These include a selection of wave types for both the source oscillator and LFO, volume, delay time and feedback, LFO destination (amp or frequency), LFO frequency and LFO amplitude. Mssiah CTRL for Mssiah synthesizer
A custom DIY hardware control mod for the Mssiah synth
A little insight on the Mssiah CTRL I built and what it sounds like. First you here the dry signal from the Mssiah, then I turn on the CTRL adding distortion. I have a little plate re-verb, but that’s it. Obviously not a real guitar, but not too bad from an 8 bit synth on a Commodore 128D with the Sid2Sid installed. I also made it easy to switch between the potentiometers and the mouse with a multi-pole switch. Great for switching back and forth from the mono synth and the sequencer. Fairlight sample pack

Bitley offers a series of sample pack based on the classic Fairlight CMI; Wavelight. It’s based on pure Fairlight disks sampled in 44,1 khz / 16 bit fidelity. These are the same samples used in the refill ‘Bitley Supersonic / Fairlight CMI Legacy II’.
Please note: The original Fairlight sounds were 8 bit samples. Therefore, 16 bits is fully sufficient to completely copy the Fairlight IIx sound for any sound source, be it an old hardware sampler or any music software application. Every effort has been made to maintain the purity of the Fairlight tone yet keeping noise level to a minimum. All sounds are normalized.
Loop points have not been set in the wave files, for your own maximum flexibility with the sounds, however, the sounds have 9 times out of 10 been looped — the Fairlight certainly didn’t have a generous sampling time, so looping is basically a part of its sound & character.
Wavelight is a series of sample packs derived directly from the unique Bitley Fairlight IIx library, with kind permission from Fairlight Instruments themselves. Not to be confused with cheap & dirty CMI libraries on the net, here’s actually the real deal, perfectly mastered, leveled and cropped. Directly aimed for pleasure and creativity. Aiff and Wav files to be used in any sample play back instrument of choice, whether you choose a hard or soft option.
The sample pack includes drum sounds from Yazoo, Art Of Noise, Pet Shop Boys and many, many others who once utilized the legendary Fairlight system.
Do you mix in the box?
…90% of the people unhappy with their sound are making the same mistake. They are completely overdriving their internal summing bus! Take all your song’s individual channel faders and bring them at least -12db and keep the Master fader at 0dB at all times.
Look at your DAW’s mixer. Now imagine the volume of your individual channel fader’s adding up from left to right heading to your Master. If you keep your channel faders close to zero surely your Master will go over odB and clip. As we all know any clipping in the digital realm is very bad.
Why not keep your channel faders all hot and turn the master down? Because you will still be overdriving cheap plug-ins. Well written plug-ins can handle a hot signal but some of the coolest freeware and to be honest some big name effects clip internally when even a warm signal is shot at them. The worst part about this happening is there is no visual warning. All you know is your mixes just sound like crap.
If you ran a test overdriving one plug-in and pushing a channel fader too hot you may not notice anything. But keep your levels low in a complicated song with over 10 channels and you will definitely notice a major improvement.
