Free reverb plug-in from Madrona Labs
Madrona Labs has a Christmas present for Mac-based musicians – a free reverb plugin:
It’s damp and chilly, and I hear the gray pitter patter of endless rain. Looking out my window I see gray sky, gray water, gray trees and gray clouds. That’s right, it’s Christmas in Seattle.
Because of your support of Aalto these past few months, I can now work full time to bring you more software and hardware to make music with. And that is something I am very thankful for. I am very excited about what we will have to offer this coming year: Aalto for Windows, the Soundplane A, and more software instruments that are even farther off the beaten path.
As a small way to say thanks, today I’m releasing Aaltoverb for Mac OS X. Aaltoverb is just the reverb section from Aalto, packaged up as its own plugin and with mix and brightness knobs added. It won’t replace your ValhallaShimmer, but it is easy on the CPU and on the eyes, and I hope it makes a nice addition to your box of colors.

Aaltoverb is an Audio Unit plugin. It requires an Intel processor of speediness 1.6 GHz or higher, and Mac OS of versioniness 10.5 or higher.

Elektrostudio has released Model Pro, a freeware virtual monophonic analog synthesizer plugin, which emulates the Moog Prodigy.

Ricepad, a music app for iOS
RiceCode has released Ricepad, a music app for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
With Ricepad you create music by arranging objects called modules in a single chain. You start from existing sounds, freely available from the constantly updating library, importable from your computer (Mac/PC/Linux/…) or pastable from the clipboard of compatible apps, or you can use the mic line(*). Then the combination of modules you compose, divided between audio sources and effects, will manipulate the sound in an unexpectedly great number or ways.
Ricepad allows you to create music that is immediately listenable to the audience: less editing and much more playing with the quick and simple interface. For example, if you like beat boxing, you can live record yourself through the mic, record a sequence and play it back as a loop, ready to be post processed, everything in sync with the bpm, e.g. quantized at 1/16. Nearly every interaction can be quantized, even the preview of audio clips when you want to set up a drum kit.
Ricepad has an extensive set of modules and offers many different techniques to create music, easily and quickly, leaving room to unleash your creativity. Every new idea can be saved as a session to be later re-opened for future use. This makes it suitable for casual and short plays, as well as for long and more structured live performances.

Combining two different Auto Echo settings in Pulsar
Demo of combining two different Auto Echo settings in Pulsar. Putting the same phrases on two channels and setting an echo with a quick delay on one channel and an echo with a longer delay on the other, the combination produces quite a rich reverb-sounding effect.
Perhaps the most radical feature of Pulsar is that the synthesis engine runs independently from the sequencer and runs at 180hz – that’s 3 times faster than a “normal” NES audio engine. The advantage of this is that all modulation-based effects have 3 times the resolution so you can get ultra-fast and super-smooth sounds. At the same time it has allowed me to exploit a few quirks of the NES’s audio to provide some unique ways to craft your NES music and sounds.
It was this approach which, to a large extent, dictated the design of the sequencing/UI of Pulsar and why it shares so much in common with LSDJ: LSDJ really makes great use of a simple, fast interface and because I’m updating the audio engine 3 times per frame, speed and simplicity were paramount.
Pulsar borrows heavily from the design, layout and commands of LSDJ. If you’ve used LSDJ you’ll probably be pretty familiar with Pulsar’s UI. There are a few little differences though so watch out for those.
