Cryo brings us new material in 2011
Martin Rudefelt, the mastermind behind Swedish synth band Cryo, will soon to start working on new material. Martin has taken a break after the latest full length album “Hidden Aggression”, excluding some remix work for other artists during the year. Together with drummer Torny Gottberg (known from Project-X) has also been featured at several festival venues in 2010, including Arvika and electrostatic.
In addition to new material with Cryo so Martin will also offer content from its previous projects Sound Sequence for free download.

Sonic Charge has revealed details about the upcoming µTonic 3.0 update.
One week left of 2010, which means one week left before the first major µTonic upgrade in over five years. I thought today would be a good day to reveal a bit more about the upcoming version 3.0.
The primary motivation behind this upgrade is to transform µTonic into a more dynamic instrument, without sacrificing its simplicity or drastically alter its “trademark sound”. We’ve always been proud of how µTonic sounds, and our intention has never been to turn it into a MegaTonic. If you are expecting to see four oscillators with sample playback and granular delay effects on top, you will be disappointed. Instead, you are going to see a set of well-balanced new features for exploring sounds, building patterns and performing live with µTonic. Features that will bring the best out of the beast.
We have already revealed that the upgrade is free and will feature the much requested support for “MIDI Program Changes” and “MIDI-file drag and drop”. I will now reveal another significant addition: “Morph”. “Morph” lets you transform all eight drum patches simultaneously from one point to another. This feature can be used both for performance (think: dramatic build-ups), for editing (think: finding semi-random sounds, “Synplant style”) or for crazy loony fun experiments (think: what would it sound like if I morph the kick to a snare and the snare to a kick, back and forth?).
A sound-file says more than a thousand words so I pulled a random preset from our big preset-bag (“EE Flat Lines”) and made a quick little arrangement with three different morph configurations. Enjoy.

Aphex Twin to headline Bloc 2011
News has been released as to the headline act for Bloc 2011, and it is none other than the Braindance master, Aphex Twin. Aphex Twin last played Bloc 2009, which featured, as part of an incredible show, a mysterious loudspeaker dancer. Aphex Twin sets are known to be special, so many will wait with anticipation for this one.
Apart for the headliner, Bloc near Bristol, UK, continues to show its development into the country’s premier electronic music festival with an already impressive early line-up – playing across the 11-13 March will include such acts as: LFO, Moderat, Speedy J, Dopplereffekt, Daedelus, Jimmy Edgar and B12 as the cream of what is still a largely unknown pie.

Freeware bus compressor effect plug-in for Windows
Platinumears has released version 2 of FL4TT3RY, a freeware bus compressor effect plug-in for Windows.
This is a gentle squashy compressor intended for use on busses, though it also works well on channels. It has a very soft knee, with a ratio that gradually increases to hard limiting, and a choice between RMS based level detection (with a window size that depends on the attack time) or a brand new peak sensing algorithm.
This unit is inspired by a particular bit of hardware that I know quite well. Its not “modelled” however: I came up with the algorithm first, thought it sounded similar, so then skinned the plug to resemble the hardware. It is definitely not a proper model, so I’m not going to name the unit in question.
Changes in FL4TT3RY 2
- Slightly gentler transfer curve brings it (subjectively) closer to the hardware that inspired it.
- Tweaked attack smoothing to make it a little more aggressive with the fastest settings.
- Tweaked release smoothing to make it pump less with the fastest settings.
- New peak sensing mode.
- External sidechain inputs.
- Left click the meter to toggle the range between 6, 12 or 18dB.
- Right click the meter to switch between Gain Reduction metering, or Gain change metering (which includes make-up gain).
