Free granulator instrument for Max for Live.

May 30, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Free granulator instrument for Max for Live.

mo-seph has released an update to Simple Max for Live Granulator, a free granulator instrument for Max for Live.

It’s very much inspired by Robert Henke’s excellent granulator external. In particular, the extra audio unit for grabbing source material.

I’ve used the GMEM GMU external granulator as the basis, as a relatively modern and fast granulation external.

Changes in Simple Max for Live Granulator

  • Fixed some trigger setting issues.
  • Added grain size link.
  • Fixed all instances starting in ON mode.
  • Interface tweaks.

The Granulator is available as a free download (Grabber audio effect and GrainPlayer MIDI instrument). Requires Live 8.2.x, Max and Max for Live.

Spacedog’s homage to Stooky Bill, ventriloquial sidekick of John Logie-Baird who appeared on the second ever television image, c1925. Baird was the inventor of an early, mechanical television apparatus that was tested at Alexander Palace, London.

This song features Spacedog’s own Stooky-like Hugo, a 1930s vent doll who was rescued from the attic of a dead magician.

If you’d like to see and hear more curiosities from Spacedog, do check out our new website:

This piece was recorded live, in one take, during Televisor, a live music and robotic show created by Spacedog and performed at the Brunswick Theatre, Brighton Festival Fringe, May 2011. Professor Elemental was guesting on the night.

This song is based on an original composition by Stephen Hiscock, with vocal and other samples composed by Sarah Angliss

Modular: Modcan Vocoder 71B and a Synth Tech MOTM-101

May 30, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Modular: Modcan Vocoder 71B and a Synth Tech MOTM-101

The Vocoder 71B is a solid DSP interpretation of the classic Vocoder effect. Analogue Vocoders that offer an adequate number of filter bands can be a challenge to manufacture with high parts count, large circuit boards and enclosures and lengthy calibration procedures. All of which adds up to high costs and large dimensions. The 71B attempts to address this, providing the most important features of a mid range Vocoder in a small package ideal for a modular environment.

To keep the footprint small we chose a simple “tone” knob which provides a “tilt” like control that scales the high and low bands with center position being flat. This method combines considerable space saving and versatility without the need for individual sliders for band levels. It also makes it possible to have with voltage control. The filter/envelope detector network uses ten 4 pole 24dB band pass filters which we found to provide good frequency isolation, important for clarity when used with vocals or speech. Also works very well processing Drum loops and other sources.

In this video:

This is just two modules, a Modcan Vocoder 71B and a Synth Tech MOTM-101 noise source. The EV dynamic mic goes through a Shure mic pre and then to the vocoder, along with some pink noise. Having the speakers up a bit was causing some feedback that helped produce some of the sustain and depth.

Formant Classic virtual analog synthesizer

May 30, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Formant Classic virtual analog synthesizer

Formant Classic virtual analog synthesizer a tribute to the legendary Elektor Formant synthesizer. apparently this synthesizer came with a manual in the late 1970’s for you to build it yourself, but in this case Eef Fonken has followed the manual and built it in synthmaker, there is a lot of information on the website about this synth and a copy of the original manual in pdf format for you to read video’s and more.
Interested visit http://www.ftec-audio.com/formant-classic/

Please note that formant classic is donationware. so if you are impressed and use the synth a lot, please leave a donation for all the hard work thats been done for us all. but you can still download it for free.

in my case i haven’t got a clue where to start to make an exact sound, but you could litterally spend hours fiddling around with the knobs and setting and make some great and crazy sounds. there are presets which you here in this video.

I can’t beleive that this vst isn’t being talked about more, because it looks like a synthesizer and works like one too. and its been around for a while now and recently updated this year for window 7, i believe ?

a reply from the developer of this classic vst plugin

A beast in the world of DAWs

May 30, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on A beast in the world of DAWs

This DAW gets even more crowded every time I have a look at it, and since their is a new version out here are some details. Robust, console-style mixing meets modeled Harrison DSP and extensive editing options, appealing enough that many Mixbus users employ it as a mixing front end even with other tools. On Linux, it finally makes the open source Ardour more palatable, but on the Mac, too, it’s winning some converts. Finding an inexpensive DAW from a leading, ultra-high-end console maker is not too bad.

Mixbus 2.0 adds a great deal of additional functionality. As expected, that also includes a price hike; the software will cost US$219. That’s still awfully low given the quality of mixing and track processing effects you get; similar channel strips alone could cost as much or significantly more, and wouldn’t be integrated in a host in the way they are in Mixbus. And you get a far more fleshed-out tool with the upgrade.

New in this release – mixing:

  • Mix bus sends, the signature and namesake of the tool, are doubled to eight from four.
  • Map plugins controls directly on the mixer strip – that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in a host before, actually.
  • Improved views: More controls in the main Mix window. Narrow mixer strips, hide/show mix buses. Consolidated plugins, sends, inserts, faders.
  • Phase correlation meter, for checking how stereo mixes will bounce to mono.
  • Polarity (phase) buttons for every mixer strip.

Editing:

  • Crossfade, layering, and automation editing improved.
  • Ripple edits in Ardour, at long last.
  • Transparent regions during drag operations for easier edits, and a “Smart Object” mode that requires less tool mode switching.

The upgrade also expands upon previously rather lean documentation, improves installation, adds key bindings, improves the UI and menus, enhances range selection, improves realtime automation recording, and enhances various other features which Harrison says were user-requested.

The first Location-Aware music album

May 30, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on The first Location-Aware music album

Approach that crazy-looking thing while listening to “The National Mall,” and you’ll hear a keyboard weep. Get closer and digital cellos begin to trace a regal melody. Closer. There’s percussion. Keep going. The volume creeps up. The drums push toward anarchy. Walk right up to the monument, press your hand against the cool, smooth stone and listen, as if the obelisk were a giant radio needle receiving some riotous transmission from deep space.

‘The National Mall’ is the first ever location-aware album, created by music duo BLUEBRAIN. Available as an app for the iPhone, the music changes and evolves based on the listeners chosen path within the National Mall park in Washington DC. It is the first in a series of site specific compositions the duo plans to release. For more information, visit bluebra.in **Android and iPad versions coming soon**
