Seasons greetings: Merry Christmas with the PPG wave 2.2 ;-)

merry christmas and a happy 2012 ! from RetroSound

all sounds:
PPG wave 2.2 Synthesizer from the year 1982
recording: multi-track (internal sequencer/arpeggiator & software)

The German made PPG Wave 2 series of synthesizers are incredibly great sounding analog/digital hybrid vintage synths. They use digital samples of wavetables and feature analog VCA envelope and VCF filter sections for a classic and warm sound. The Wave 2.2 (pictured above) has oscillators that can generate over 2,000 different single-cycle 8-bit digital waveforms! Covered by knobs, the Wave still looks analog and this comprises the “Analog Control Panel”. More complex and new-wave editing of the wavetables and samples is covered by the “Digital Control Panel” where there are several key-pad buttons and an LCD screen. Another familiar treat to analog junkies is the inclusion of an 8-track sequencer which features automation of pitch, loudness, filter cutoff, waveforms and more. A cool feature – its onboard sequencer will also record any filtering and wave changes, in real-time!!

The more commonly encountered Wave 2.3 followed the 2.2 and had enhanced sample-playback capabilities. The sampler was pretty full-featured for its time and included upgraded 12-bit digital waveforms, Fourier analysis and linear playback of samples. The 2.3 model also featured 8-parts multitimbrality and MIDI implementation.

More from Moog: Chick Corea on Analog Synths live

December 24, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on More from Moog: Chick Corea on Analog Synths live

Chick Corea took a moment from his 2011 tour with Return to Forever IV to talk about the role of various analog synthesizers in his on-stage sound.

Armando Anthony “Chick” Corea (born June 12, 1941) is an American jazz pianist, keyboardist, and composer.

Many of his compositions are considered jazz standards. As a member of Miles Davis’ band in the 1960s, he participated in the birth of the electric jazz fusion movement. In the 1970s he formed Return to Forever. Along with Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Keith Jarrett, he has been described as one of the major jazz piano voices to emerge in the post-John Coltrane era.

His career has been driven by his will to operate as a free agent and compulsively explore different avenues of music making. This hunger has positioned him as an important catalyst in the world of serious, mainstream acoustic jazz, and he is one of the most influential and widely studied figures in the last 40 years.

New mighty soft synth from u-he – DIVA 1.0 Analogue synth

December 23, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on New mighty soft synth from u-he – DIVA 1.0 Analogue synth

u-he has announced the release of version 1.0 of Diva, a virtual analog synthesizer instrument for Windows and Mac.

Diva‘s oscillators, filters and envelopes closely model electronic components found in some of the great monophonic and polyphonic synthesizers of yesteryear. Modules can be mixed and matched – build hybrids of those classics!

What really sets Diva apart is the authenticity of analogue sound. Diva is the first native software synth that applies methods used in industrial circuit simulators (e.g. PSpice) in realtime. We think she‘s a game-changer.

Diva is fully functional until December 31st – your ideal distraction for the holidays!

Diva for Windows and Mac (VST/AU) includes more than 1200 presets and is available to purchase for the introductory price of $119 until January 15th 2012 ($60 off regular of $179 USD).

More information: u-he Diva
