Grain Science — Quick Overview
A quick tour of our new iPad synthesiser, in which I make a lot of strange loud noises.
The intro tune was created in Grain Science itself by using the built in performance recorder on each track, and sending them to our Hokusai Audio Editor for mixing and mastering.

Grain Science is based on the principles of granular synthesis: taking audio (a waveform/sample), tearing it into tiny pieces (the “grains”), and then putting them back together.
You can use it like a traditional sampler, by telling it to put the pieces back together exactly how it found them. You can use it like a traditional analogue synthesiser, by using sawtooth, sine or other basic waveforms as the source material — after the grain synthesis is done, you still have a variety of sophisticated tools to pass your sound through, before it hits the speakers or recording.
Of course, you can also go to places that neither a sampler nor an analogue synth can dream of going! With grain synthesis, the sound can be exactly as it started, or completely unrecognisable, or anywhere in between. The ability to create entirely new sounds that still, somehow, retain some of the essential qualities of the original, is one of the things that makes granular synthesis so interesting.
Not only that, but Grain Science offers two grain units per voice. Because you can control the mix between them — either manually, or programmed to change over time according to your needs — you can create layered, morphing or rich, complex modulated sounds (as you can also use the second grain unit to amplitude-modulate the first). You can also get direct control of the grain unit scrubbing, allowing you to “grainbend” live to create truly wild audio!

Exclusive radio interview with industrial act Hocico at ElectriXmas 2011
We continue our reporting from this year’s electronic music event in Sweden – ElectriXmas. This time Steelberry Clones had an interview with Hocico, the agrressive industrial electronic act from Mexico (although they live in Germany today). Backstage we asked the lead singer of Hocico everything ranging from the new album, how it is to play in Russia and their take on iOS synth apps.
The duo was officially formed in 1993 by Erik Garcia a.k.a Erk Aicrag (lyrics and vocals) and Oscar Mayorga a.k.a. Racso Agroyam (Programming), but both cousins had been experimenting with electronic music, mixing industrial and EBM, since they were fifteen years old. Their music can be described as electro-industrial. Erk Aircrag and Racso Agroyam incited to express their feelings through technology. Given the influence of varying currents of electronic music (mainly Skinny Puppy) they began their trajectory in 1989 in a project called “Niñera Degenerada”. Their lyrics are both in Spanish as well as English. The Spanish word hocico means snout, and is used in Mexico as a dis-respective way to describe someone’s comments coming out of their mouth.
Racso Agroyam has a side project called Dulce Liquido.
Erk Aicrag has a side project called Rabia Sorda.

iPhone’s SIRI plays the piano
SIRI plays a YAMAHA Disklavier WIRELESSLY via WIFI & Airplay, complete with moving keys in full expression and moving pedals. Presented by the inventor of SmartKEY for Disklavier, Craig Knudsen.
Take a standard MIDI songfile and convert it to an audio file (while maintaining the MIDI data). The songfile is then sent wirelessly via WiFi to an Apple Airport Express (which is mounted underneath a Yamaha Disklavier reproducing piano. The audio output of the Airport Express is then connected to the analog MIDI inputs of the Disklavier, using a standard audio cable.
Then, you simply ask Siri to play your favorite song from your iTunes library, and Siri responds immediately, by making the Disklavier’s keys and pedal move up and down, recreating the performance, including full orchestration.
The result is nothing short of magical.
Ableton Live Sidechain Compression and Sidechain Autofilter
In this series, Berkleemusic.com facilitator Loudon Stearns covers five ways tracks can interact with audio effects using Ableton Live. The first installment, Sidechain Compression, shows how a compressor can be used to create an interaction between a synth and an acoustic bass part. The Post FX and Post mixer routing points are examined as well as compressor specifics.
The Second installment, Sidechain Autofilter, shows how Autofilter can be used to give an automatic interaction between two tracks.

It contains 38 smooth, big room pluck sounds inspired by such artists as Kaskade, Dinka, Jerome Isma-Ae (“Big Room Pluck Sounds”), Pryda as well as some old classic plucks inspired by Chicane, Anjunabeats releases, Paul Van Dyk etc.

Crashing through Mirrors – Moog Voyager, Adidas tracksuit and a wall in Berlin
This video is about the interaction of a man in a tracksuit with a Moog synthesizer at a wall in Berlin.
The song actually is a metaphoric story about a broken mirror, but there was no mirror available, not even a broken one. But we had a wall, which is even more metaphoric.

Reason 6 gets updated to Reason 6.0.2
Reason 6.0.2 and Reason Essentials 1.0.2 updates are now available for free download. These releases bring a number of bug fixes, better performance, as well as Remote support for more hardware controllers and are recommended for all users.
