Miniwave Highpass modulation
An implementation of the Bob Borries modulation trick to mimic PWM on a Miniwave.
Simply put, an LFO (or EG, or other modulation source) sweeps the cutoff on a ramp (rising sawtooth) wave being fed into a highpass filter. The output of the highpass HPF drives the Miniwave input.
Changing the waveshape of the ramp changes the spectral content of the Miniwave, lending a PWM style tonal sweep.
Not everything sounds great, but they beauty of it is that one can go from subtle sweeps to nails-on-a-chalkboard grind with relatively little effort.
iPad: UltraPhaser – new flexible phaser effect
UltraPhaser is an extremely flexible phaser effect, with a unique user interface. With very low latency and stereo input, the wide range of phasing effects can be applied to all kinds of input sounds, from guitar, bass and keyboard to full mixes and electronic setups. Full Audiobus compatibility allows for the interconnection with other iPad apps.
UltraPhaser gives you total control. You can precisely adjust the stereo LFO’s speed, width, center frequency, phase shift and shape. Choose between 4, 6, 8, 12 or even 24 stages. Ultraphaser also includes an optional High Pass Filter.
UltraPhaser’s unique user interface includes an LFO Control view, through which the stereo LFO can be evaluated and edited. You can see the speed, width, phase shift and shape of the LFO in this view.
The Vectorscope shows a plot of the output’s left versus right audio channels, to give you an idea of the ‘spatiousness’ of the sound.
UltraPhaser comes packed with presets various classic and more unusual phasers, but of course you can also make your own.
UltraPhaser supports very low latency. This low latency is ideal when processing live audio or an instrument, as hardly any delay is introduced.

Little Nemo – Seconds

Another day, another 80sObscurities feature for all of you beautiful people. Our 80s artist du jour is fabulous French band Little Nemo. Formed in 1983 by Olivier Champeau (vocals, keyboards) and Vincent Legallo (vocals, guitar) and named for the titular character in character in American cartoonist Winsor McCay’s “Little Nemo in Slumberland”, the band created music that ran the gamut from gothic ethereal to new romantic to dark wave. (Their final album, 1992’s “The World Is Flat”, was misdirected, quasi-commercial pop rock that didn’t register well with their target audience – whoever that might have been – and has been largely discredited and discounted by the band’s fan base.)
They debuted in 1986 on a split cassette with the band Rain Culture, who promptly disappeared immediately afterwards. While the production of their self-released first album “Past and Future” (also issued on cassette) left a lot to be desired, forgivably, Little Nemo’s compositions showed significant promise. In 1988, they were joined by Nicolas Dufaure on bass and after again issuing another record on their own – the “Private Life” 12” – the band signed to esteemed indie label Lively Art. It was through this association that Little Nemo achieved their most widespread success.
They, along with label mates Asylum Party and Mary Goes Round, defined what became known as the “Touching Pop” movement, a musical style categorized as much by how it made the listener feel as by any mode of composition or instrumentation. The movement was a fleeting moment in time; by the early 90s, each of those bands – and the label itself – faded into oblivion. Champeau would rechristen himself as “Doctorolive” and maintain a level of visibility within the techno and house scenes through the middle part of the last decade, but today’s track – the 1990 version of a song that first appeared on the band’s 1987 debut – shows the artist at his 80sObs apex. Musician and composer Toby Baker on the Korg Kronos
Toby Baker is a London based Keyboardist, Musician, Composer and producer with over 30 years experience. He has recorded and toured with many artists from Europe and the US, composed for TV programmes & commercials and worked on several movie scores and trailers.
Just some of his credits include work with Michael Macdonald, Alexander O’Neal, Eric Clapton, BB King, Lulu and Sinead O’Connor.
Although he has a love of fine vintage analogue keyboards, he has been using the Korg Kronos for much of his work and his was kind enough to chat to the camera about his initial reaction to using Kronos on stage and in the studio.

Malekko Richter Megawave – 1st Riff 2013
‘djangosfire’s first actual “patch” jamming with the new Malekko – Richter “Megawave” wavetable/waveshaper module.
“I patched a Saw waveform from the “Oscillator II” into the Megawave wave shaper input. Then an “Envelator” provided a clock (for the sequencer) and nice transient patched into the Megawave CV wave select.
Output of the Megawave patched into a “Dual Borg” VCF/LPG then finally into an Echophon Delay. Also, there is a free running Tri LFO from an “Anti-Oscillator” – patched into the CV cutoff of the Dual Borg.

The Malekko/Richter Megawave is a selectable wavetable device featuring many of the available preset Wiard Miniwave ROM waveforms. Each of the ten ROM selections contains 256 waveforms. Not an oscillator, the Megawave can be used as an audio wave shaper, complex LFO function generator, stage quantizer, random function generator, non-linear waveform distortion unit, etc.
WAVE, BANK, and ROM selection are all voltage controllable and each CV input has fine control.
The Megawave wavetable device is 16hp, 35mm deep, and consumes around 90mA power.
