Electrix Tweaker – new controller for Ableton
Electrix is back, and their first new product is a control surface with multiple buttons, drum pads, browser, and more.
The Tweaker is a performance controller for Abelton users, Traktor users, and music producers and performers of all genres.
At the heart of Tweaker lies a grid of 32 rubber pads backlit by RGB LEDs, and 8 velocity sensitive drum pads. There is a channel strip on each side of the grid, and a crossfader centered underneath. Each channel trips is comprised of a fader, three backlit rubber pads, an analog knob, and three push encoders with red LED rings. The navigation section at the top of the unit has a large browsing encoder and a four-way selection push grid (left, right, up, down).
Tweaker is fully USB bus powered and also has MIDI In and Out ports.

Making dubstep bass using Ableton Live

Closer look at ControlAble – multitouch controller for Ableton Live
ControlAble is a multitouch controller for Ableton Live. ControlAbles display includes track names, clip names, clip colours, clip playing status, mixer controls, device rack controls, tempo, and transport controls. All controls are mapped automatically so no more need for midi assign.
ControlAble is written in python using the Kivy framework. More information on Kivy can be found here: http://kivy.org/

“Korg-asbord” – new Ableton Live rack
Live performance of a new track by AfroDJMac “This is on Your Mind.” Performed in Ableton Live using an APC40, Launchpad, OP-1, MPK Mini. Track Originates from a jam in the iPad app Korg iMS-20.

After creating the basic tracks using the Korg iMS-20 app for the iPad, I brought the track into Abletonto “take it to the next level.” This week’s download features sampled instruments created with the Korg iMS-20.
The track is relatively simple, based on just one chord, two synths and three drum sounds. All of those sounds have been taken out the Korg iMS-20 app and placed into Ableton Instruments with their own effects and controls. The beauty is that Ableton allows us to take those sounds to sonic places impossible within the app. The Korg iMS-20 really sounds great and I hope you will find these instruments useful in your own productions.
As a bonus to these three most excellent instruments, I also created another instrument using the new Korg Monotron Duo (hence the title “Korg-asbord”). These samples were graciously sent to me by Hamtone. (This was extremely kind of him, so please check out his site and Like his Facebook page). I took some of those samples and stacked them up, along with a sine-wave-Operator synth, in an instrument rack. This allows you to mix all three sounds together to create some exciting timbres. If you checked out my 13th download, with the original Korg Monotron, you know not to be fooled by the diminutive stature of this synth; it is a deep, thick, heavy beast!
Now as if that is not enough, our friend JM-DG (the man who supplied the samples for the Dirty Trumpet and Shakey Muted Trumpet Packs) has sent me an incredible instrument rack made with an upright bass. I didn’t even touch the rack and give it to you just as he gave it to me, because it is incredible! It has controls to change from bowed to pizzicato, arpeggiating delay, distortion, basically everything you could want. I’m sure that this instrument will find its place in many productions down the road, amazing!

Commodore 64 Drums for Ableton Live SID 8-bit
Commodore 64 SID chip drums for Ableton Live drum racks. This is a cool collection of retro 8-bit drum sounds. There are effects assigned to macro knobs to allow for extreme glitching and subtle finessing.

One of the cool things about drum racks is the ability to give the instrument its own send and return channels. It’s a very convenient way to add effects to your sounds without setting up additional channels in your Live set. So, I’ve given the Commodore 64 drums three effect sends. There is reverb which also has control over the reverb time. Next is a delay, set to repitch, mode, allowing for some cool analog delay effects. And finally, a New York Style or Parallel compression. This is a really useful effect for drum sounds because it allows you to squeeze and beef up your sound, but also retains the dynamics of the original. The rack has control of the pitch of the samples, allowing you to raise or drop them by 48 steps. As you might imagine, this drastically changes things up. Finally there is Ableton’s Arpeggiator effect, which can be helpful in creating rhythmical patterns.

Using Ableton Live we called up our Silent Way LFO plugin. The LFO is synced to the master tempo of Live and we wrote in some automation on our Ableton clip., selecting 1/4, 1/8, 1/4. then 16th notes. The drum beat is from Live too.
In this demo we’re using an RME Fireface 800, ADAT output directly into the ES-3 module. The sound is the Pittsburgh Oscillator into a Division-6 Filtaire. The Silent Way LFO is controlling the filter’s cutoff frequency.
