What is Rumble? Rumble delivers a comprehensive set of pristine, carefully crafted marching drum samples. Each instrument was captured using modern-day film score recording techniques at multiple dynamic levels, round-robins, and at close, mid, and far microphone placements, affording composers, producers, arrangers, and performers a solid foundation for realizing accurate, dynamic musical productions. Sample Logic and System Blue have also partnered up with Avid delivering Rumble with seamless integration in Avid’s Sibelius 7 music notation software.
But that’s just the beginning…Rumble goes far beyond traditional marching drums and enters into the morphed sonic realm of Sample Logic’s trademark “blurring the line between music and sound design.” All of the drums recorded for Rumble are not only included as production-ready multi-sampled instruments, but are also used as the basis for all of the morphed sounds. Interesting new and free Mattel Synsonics drum machine
Francis Preve has put together a free virtual Mattel Synsonics drum machine for Ableton Live:
In the pantheon of vintage analog drum machines, there’s an unsung classic that isn’t from a big name manufacturer like Roland or Korg, but from a toy company. Released in 1981, the Mattel Synsonics was an affordable black box that housed a fully analog kit consisting of kick, two toms, snare, cymbal and hi-hat – all playable via velocity sensitive pads.
Of course, since it was a “toy”, few artists took it very seriously – with one notable exception: Kraftwerk.
About a month ago, I pulled my Synsonics of its shelf in my studio, fired it up and started sampling.
It’s available as a free download from Preve’s site.

Tape Death has released Jomox XBase-09 Kicks, a free sample pack featuring sounds from the hardware drum machine.
The Jomox XBase-09 is an analog drum machine based on Roland’s 909. The difference is like the Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris fight in Way of the Dragon. They both got kicks, but at the end of the day Bruce Lee broke Chuck Norris’ fucking neck. The 909 is good, but the Jomox is better.

Drum machine in action – Roland CR 78 Demo
Although primitive by today’s standards, the CR-78 represented an important advance in drum machine technology at the time. The wood effect cabinet and preset rhythms of the CR-78 such as Waltz, Bossa Nova and Rhumba suggest that it was seen by its designers as primarily an accompaniment for an electric organ, but the CR-78 became one of the favorite instruments of Pop and electronic musicians in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Songs that make prominent use of the Roland CR-78 include “Heart of Glass” by Blondie, “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins and “Duchess” by Genesis. John Foxx expresses his love for the CR-78 in this interview.
The CR-78 used analog drum voices, which sounded very little like real percussion instruments, but they instead had their own distinctive sounds. The unit also incorporated an early Intel microprocessor to provide digital control of its functions. Previous Roland drum machines had offered only a selection of preset rhythms. The CR-78’s key new feature was that in addition to offering 34 preset rhythms, it provided four programmable memory locations for storing patterns created by the user. These could be created by using step programming with the WS-1 box, which was available as an optional extra.
The CR-78’s front panel allowed the user to customize the preset rhythms by altering the volume balance between bass and treble sounds, canceling some sounds altogether, and adding ring modulation (“metal beat”) to the cymbal sounds. Many of the preset rhythms have a memorable character, and the ability to manipulate them further made the CR-78 a versatile instrument.
No digital control of tempo was provided on the front panel, with only an analog knob for the function. However, the CR-78 would also accept an external V-trig clock, allowing a control voltage to be fed in from another device such as a music sequencer. A selection of preset fills and rhythm variations were also available, either to trigger manually, or automatically every 2, 4, 8 or 16 bars. Some of these fills were used in synth-pop songs such as “Enola Gay” by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, “Underpass” by John Foxx and “Vienna” by Ultravox.
Roland also produced a simpler drum machine, the CompuRhythm CR-68. This was essentially the same as the CR-78, but without programmable patterns or the ability to fade drum sounds in and out. At the same time Roland also sold the TR-66, a smaller unit which offered fewer preset rhythms and no programmability.

Roland SH-101 and CR-8000
The CR-8000 produces classic electronic drum sounds that hint back to the famous CR-78 and TR-808 drum machines. But none of these sounds are editable and there is only one mono audio output making this machine less of a studio-piece of gear and more of a collector’s item. Aside from these limitations it, like other CompuRhythms, has a series of preset patterns in many different styles as well as programmable patterns with 8 storage patches. While the CR-8000 is usually sampled for today’s applications, the thing about the CR-8000 that cannot be captured by sampling the sounds is the swing/groove feel which has its own control knob. The intervals between beats are variable, but also the timbre changes.

Short (minimalistic) demo made only with SH-101 and CR-8000. Delay was provided by Boss DE-200. I should note that i modified my CR-8000 with individual outputs. Therefore, your CR-8000 might not sound like this, as each channel was separately EQ-ed (on a Soundcraft desk). No compression was used.

The XBase-09 is serious about emulating the Roland TR-909. Like the 909, it is an analog drum machine, and it sounds just like the 909, and more! It offers the same types of analog controls that the TR-808 and TR-909 did such as tuning, level, decay, snap, etc. However it provides more of these controls for more sounds than the originals ever did and has MIDI implementation and Patch memory making the XBase-09 a much more versatile machine than those originals.
Kick and snare are true analog, not emulation and not sampled. The Hihats, cymbal, ride, rimshot, claps and noise sounds are samples but are still quite tweakable. All your edited sounds can be stored into the 100 patches of memory. Use the built-in LFOs to modulate the Bass drum pitch, Snare Tune, Snare Snap, Snare Noise Tune, HiHat Tune or LFO 2.
The XBase-09’s built-in sequencer is also more advanced yet faithful to the style of its mentors. Step or Real-Time programming just like it’s done on the 909 and 808! However, on the XBase, any edits to the sounds will also be stored with the pattern or song! This really liven’s up your beats and allows you freedom and control to do things not easily possible on the original beat boxes! There’s also an extensive Shuffle mode. Of course the XBase-09 is also happy as a simple drum tone module, with all editable controls accessible using MIDI. The controls also send MIDI data when tweaked so you can record real-time edits into your external sequencer.
