The 4093 NAND Synth is a super-modifiable noise generator that will knock your socks off with its sheer amount of sonic potential! Low pulsing drones, random robotic chaos, high-pitched laser sounds – it’s all here in this small package.

A great project to begin your explorations into the world of DIY sound synthesis, the 4093 NAND Synth PCB was designed with the beginner in mind: Board-mountable switches, tension-relief power supplies, socketed IC, hands-on knobs and switches for tone control, and a detailed silkscreen PCB to help you solder components right the first time. An über-cool mod section allows for all kinds of custom control – variable control voltage input, output gating, buffering, modulation; the sky’s the limit with the 4093 NAND Synth PCB.

The 4093 NAND Synth PCB was designed by our electronics engineer Steven here at Synthrotek. Powered by 9V battery, an AC Adapter rated at 5-12V 200mA Center Negative polarity can also be used.

Closer look at the Addictive Synth Version 2

Addictive Synth – Wavetable Synthesis meets Noise

The new spectral noise generator adds a new dimension to the already huge sound universe of Addictive Synth. This generator is the first of its kind and allows for extraordinarily detailed control over the dynamic spectrum of the noisy part of sounds. Despite its complexity it’s pretty easy to use and integrates naturally into the sound design philosophy of Addictive Synth.

With the integration of a hi end reverb we closed the last gap to get fully addicted.

One more thing…
…the revised GUI is now compatible to the retina display of the new iPad !

Rough Trade Release Electronic Compilation – Electronic 11

December 15, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Rough Trade Release Electronic Compilation – Electronic 11

Rough Trade Shops’ latest compilation, Electronic 11, is due for release on the 16th January and looks set to be rather good. It gathers together a nice selection of music we’ve been posting about over the past year – everything from the synth-pop styles of Ford & Lopatin and John Maus through Azari & III’s fat, disco-leaning house to some bleak, bracing industrial/noise from the likes of Pansonic and Ekoplekz.

22 tracks, full sleevenotes. exclusive limited edition varnished sleeve available from rough trade shops only. the new rough trade shops compilation cd is aimed squarely at the new year. shiny, fresh, clean and minimal electronic music in your earphones provide the perfect soundtrack for the cold and frosty early january. as rob young writes in the sleevenotes – check emeralds’ mark mcguire’s glowing ‘alma’, which begins with a hymn; or nicolas jaar’s incantatory ‘space is only noise if you can see’, like a dubbed-out depeche mode. at the other end of the scale, prurient and keiji haino (in tandem with finnish sub-bass spelunkers pansonic) use the full throated roar and the abject howl of the avant garde and the hardcore. meanwhile, compare rustie’s dense ‘hyperthrust’, with its micro-events folded up and crammed into milliseconds, with alva noto’s ‘uni deform’ bitcrush collision, which emerges from the rarefied world of conceptual sound art. marcus schmickler, who can occasionally be found making exploratory post-rock as pluramon, sends your ears down a labyrinth of no return with the abstract operations of ‘discordance axis’, closely followed by ekoplekz’s hallucinatory tone-scrub, jarring and alienating as an mk-ultra mind-control experiment. in ‘and the world laughs with you’, brainfeeder’s shapeshifting boss flying lotus invites thom yorke to jack into a cybernautical call and response session. even the most outwardly conventional track here, hercules and love affair, has its house 4/4 scraped and sandblasted with gravelly patches of digital irritant. ford and lopatin’s ’emergency room’ is like some unearthly fusion of scritti politti and heaven 17; john maus’s swooning portamento synthi-fanfares summon up the fairlight manoeuvres of the thompson twins and blancmange. azari and iii’s ‘manhooker’ transports you back to sun-up at some orbital rave at the very close of that strange plastic decade” comprising sound art, dubstep, chill-wave, witch house, electro-pop, digital hip hop, tech-minimalism, electro-house, and metal-machine music supplied by labels such as editions mego, warp, blastfirstpetite, raster-noton, type, skam, tri angle and more. rte11 is selected by the staff at both london shops and is, stylistically, as varied a set of tracks that you would expect from us.

The full tracklist runs as follows:

“Scratchy” – Noise & Rhythm Generator

December 15, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on “Scratchy” – Noise & Rhythm Generator

Scratchy is a standalone piece of software that produces noise. This noise can be manipulated by a tempo-synced Gating effect (at various degrees of note length) and by a Cutoff control to adjust the pitch. The result is something akin to scratching.

Other effects include Delay, Reverb, Bit Crusher and Comb Filter.

Controlled by a custom layout for TouchOSC for iPad – £2.99 from App Store http://goo.gl/xL714

The music used in this video is ‘Quantum Lock’ by Pete Di-Murro: http://soundcloud.com/mooyon/quantum-lock

Scratchy and the control templates for iPad and iPhone are coming soon as a free download from http://digitaldjtools.net. Check the website or Twitter / G+ / Facebook feeds for updates.

Industrial noise synth

December 7, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Industrial noise synth

Serious noise in this video:

Here’s a clip of the performance synth I built over the summer of 2011. I just added an awesome rhythm section prototype circuit based on Eric archers amazing andromeda drum modules. The drum sequencer is basically just two CD4089 binary rate multipliers. I added a CD4024 binary counter for making more complex rhythm sequences and also added a CD40106 for inverting various signals to put everything in phase.

Infernal Noise Machine

December 3, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Infernal Noise Machine

“Trying it out… Maths into VCAs. All sounds from the INM.”

THE INM IS NOT A MUSIC SYNTHESIZER

The Infernal Noise Machine was designed towards the creation of noise, sound effects, and for the general field of sound design. Having said that, the INM can create “musical” tones and sound – and quite a few of them – but that was not the goal. It is semi-modular, which means part of the signal path is hard-wired and cannot be changed, but it does allows some variation and external control. It can be used completely independently, but is intended for use with external control voltage (CV) sources to affect or modulate various parameters, which is where the INM truly comes alive (you will see what I mean).

So what can you do with it? Incidental sounds and ambiences, unholy caterwauling, soundscapes from melancholy to manic, even percussion and other traditional musical sounds. The Infernal Noise Machine is particularly effective for making drones that evolve with time as well, with no external sources required. The internal architecture allows for a wide range of self-evolving, beat-frequency style tonal variations over an infinite range of rates. There is really no simple way to describe what the INM can do – you have to find out for yourself. This is a unique device. It requires a bit of time and patience to get a feel for how it works, but it is worth the effort.

Beep Poet 2 – Home made noise maker in a can

November 20, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Beep Poet 2 – Home made noise maker in a can

This is a neat little can :-)

Background info:

The Beep Poet 2 is available from Etsy in USD http://www.etsy.com/shop/SymetriColour and Folksy in GBP http://www.folksy.com/shops/ChrisDodsworthDesign

The first half of this video shows the Beep Poet 2 connected via its 1/4″ jack and the second half shows it playing through its internal speaker. The Beep Poet 2 is a battery powered noise maker in a can. Its great for making sound effects and silly noises. It is controlled by 4 knobs, and 2 switches.

It has 2 oscillators (Red and Green knobs). Osc 1 produces audio frequency ranges whilst osc 2 produces LFO and audio frequencies which is great for extreme effects. Osc 1 goes to the output through a simple passive filter (Yellow knob) Osc 2 can modulate the pitch of osc 1 by the amount set by the blue knob or gate its volume when the modulation switch is turned on. There is a switch to trigger the unit which can be locked in place by pushing it one way or give a momentary action by pushing it the other.

The knobs all go backward. This is because I’m using logarithmic knobs which make the oscillators easier to control when wired up the wrong way round. The Beep Poet 2 has a small loudspeaker to produce sound but can also be plugged into external equipment via a 1/4″ socket on the base of the unit. The Beep Poet 2 is powered by a single 9v battery (not supplied) which can be installed by removing the nut around the 1/4″ socket and removing the base. Its mounted in a recycled tin can. It is also supplied with an instruction CDR.
