SXSW Gear Alley 2012 Austin, TX was the place to be and Casio knew this was the audience to be some of the first to preview their new XW line of synthesizers. Casio’s full line of keyboards and Privia digital pianos were a big hit, but the buzz was clearly the new XW synths!

Genome Sequencer MASSIVE MIDI Jam!

Finally getting my brain in to the GENOME Midi Sequencer, by White Noise Audio. It is VERY COOL!
Using network MIDI, I’ve connected the iPad2 (running Genome/Arctic Keys/BS-16i/NLog Pro), to an iPhone 4 (running Sunrizer) and an iPod Touch (running Arctic Keys).
Also, via an iRig MIDI connector on the iPad, am sending a MIDI signal to a Moog Little Phatty as well. Can you believe this all works! I have a pretty strong WiFi signal, so the iPhone/iPod Touch work well and there isn’t any discernible latency.
Presumably I could run my other iPod touch as well, with a compatible virtual MIDI app. I also have a MIDI splitter box, so the idea of sending to more MIDI hardware is also a idea (or by chaining with MIDI THRU).
The possibilities are great with Genome!

In February 2009, Alexander Robotnick and Ludus Pinsky put together their personal analog synths to organise and perform an Analog Session. The idea was to recreate the purely analog sound of the 70s and early 80s, which the two artists consider being the true “electronic sound”. The Session lasted 5 days , 3 of which to set up and connect pieces of equipment and to fix sync problems and VAM malfunctioning.

Space Palette at STEIM
A performance by Tim Thompson on the Space Palette at STEIM (see steim.org) in Amsterdam. This three-dimensional instrument uses the Microsoft Kinect to translate hand motion directly into both music and visuals. It’s like having four 3D mousepads in mid-air. The Space Palette is a Kinect-based instrument used to perform music and graphics simultaneously, controlled directly by your hands. The picture above shows the newest version, which you can see in action in this video of an open house performance on the Space Palette. The new version also appeared at the Sea of Dreams 2012 New Year’s Eve party in San Francisco. At that event, it was only doing graphics, because it was too loud to do anything else. The previous (rectangular) version of the Space Palette can be seen in this video of people playing with it at Burning Man 2011. Search YouTube for “Space Palette” to find other videos.
Technical details about the latest version can be found in these slides from a talk about the Space Palette. I’m now using Resolume as a FreeFrame host, which I highly recommend.
Source code and a Windows executable for the core bit of software (that talks to the Microsoft Kinect, recognizes your hands within an arbitrary flat surface with holes, and sends out TUIO/OSC messages that can drive whatever you want to control) is available here.
