Mode Machines SID (Sneak Preview)
“Hello ladies and gentlemen, here you can find our new product SID. We work real hard to present the new SID as soon as possible.
Coming real soon! ”
The latest hardware melds the classic chip sounds of the SID chip with an x0x sequencer a la the Roland TB-303. The preview also reveals more of how this unit works, including per-note modulation and sequencing features. Earlier this year, they added a Mac/Windows/Linux editor; now, they’re adding an iPad editor as well.
Features:
- Built around the original MOS SID chip, as heard in the Commodore 64, at least in the first 300 units.
- x0x control layout
- Step sequencing
- 3 expression knobs for macro controls of each patch
- Bundled editor software (see the video below, from earlier this year)
- NERD-PANEL, “a powerful interactive blueprint which enables you to address the chip one pin at a time – also a great educational tool.”
- 100+ Patches.
- 50+ Wavetables drum sounds/effects.
- Audio in, out; MIDI in, out. USB connectivity for MIDI control, too.
- Onboard display.
- German and English documentation.

Introducing the RetroCade Synth
Here are the details:
The RetroCade Synth is a combination of the Papilio FPGA board, the RetroCade MegaWing, and a control dashboard that runs on a computer*. This exciting new hardware synthesizer is built on Gadget Factory’s own Papilio platform, and is designed with both hardware hackers and musicians in mind. Musicians will love the ease of use and extreme retro glitchiness that the Retrocade has to offer. Hackers will love that it is open-source, and is designed to be HACKED. Either way, you’re in luck. You will find no better, more flexible synthesizer at this price point anywhere else!
The RetroCade Synth boasts the capability to play the built-in Commodore 64 SID chip, the Yamaha YM-2149 chip, .mod files, and MIDI files – all at the same time! The RetroCade Synth can be played via any external MIDI control interface or via your favorite audio/ sequencing software. We have built a custom VST software dashboard which gives you visual control over all the various parameters the synth has to offer, and it is included at all hardware tiers here on Kickstarter.
Papilio FPGA
- Xilinx Spartan FPGA (Spartan 3E 500K or Spartan 6 LX9)
- High Speed USB port for programming and communication
- ZPUino Soft Processor
- YM2149
- MOS 6581 (I.E. C64 SID)
RetroCade MegaWing
- 2 – ¼” Stereo Audio Jacks with 18 bit Delta Sigma DAC
- MIDI – In, Out, Through
- uSD Card for MOD, MIDI, YM, SID, and config files
- MicroJoystick – 4 directions, Select
- 2×16 LCD Display
- 16 Analog inputs for sliders and knobs
- 16 Digital inputs for switches and peripherals
Control Dashboard
- Control all of the features of the audio chips from a computer.
- Made with SynthMaker for easy customization
- VST plugin or standalone executable
New stuff from the world of chip tunes
Chip stepsequencer – AY38910
“Song i made in train
Video i shot in train”
It’s chiptime again: Mail Order Monsters – Fairlight
“Mail Order Monsters performing the song Fairlight, live in studio at WKTV. We play exclusively through the ‘SID’ chip, taken directly from Commodore 64 computers and placed in a new hand built circuitry that allows greater flexibility, and compatibility with modern MIDI equipment. We utilize over 20 chips in our performances.”

Bleep’ – new free synth plugin
ToneBytes has announced Bleep’, a free synthesizer instrument for Windows.
Bleep’ — is a free VSTi synthesizer plug-in for Windows which inspired by the sound of MOS Technology SID. At the same time Bleep’ is not emulator of this chipset but only partially similar to its architecture.
Bleep’ features
- 3 oscillators with four waveforms: sawtooth, triangle, pulse (with PW) and noise.
- Each oscillator has own detuner, ADSR envelope and multimode LP/BP/HP filter.
- Multimode LFO synced with BPM.
- Modulator Envelope Generator.
- Pseudo arpeggiator.
- Overall multimode filter.
- Built-in preset manager with ability to patch name editing.
- VST automation and full MIDI Learning are supported.
Bleep’ is available to download as a freeware VST instrument plug-in for Windows PC.
New synth from Mode Machines called SID
Here’s an upcoming box from Mode Machines called SID. Apparently there’s some controversy over it’s design (link). Chris Randall took the photo above at NAMM. It should go for about $600 USD.
“SID is an 8-Bit desktop synthesizer with a double personality. It’s simplistic layout and ease of use delivers pleasure at the first touch and it’s familiar step sequencer will have you programming patterns and beats in no time. 3 expression knobs control the key features of each Patch for instant results. But don’t let it’s simplicity fool you: The supplied SID STUDIO SOFTWARE enables you to tweak every parameter under the hood! Draw and design your patches with instant feedback from the SID. Also check out the NERD-PANEL, a powerful interactive blueprint which enables you to address the chip one pin at a time – also a great educational tool.” – modemachines.com

C64 Alien – SID Main Theme LIVE
Live remix of an “Alien” main theme composed by Paul Clansey back in 1984. “We live as we dream: alone”..
Game was developed by Amsoft and released for Commodore 64, ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC.
The main theme is played by C64 with Cynthcart cartridge. Please note that Gameboys in this one are for decoration purposes only (unlike the bottle of Southern Comfort ^-^ ).

Elektron Sidstation 100% sounds demo mix
For more demo sounds and information, please visit the sidstation page here:
http://www.polynominal.com/site/studio/gear/synth/sidstation/index.html
A strange mix of analog and digital technology fully Based on the famous Sound Interface Device “SID” 6581 created by Bob Yannes who did also the ENSONIQ MIRAGE project. Elektron boasts to have pushed the SID to new limits with new paramaters optimized for lighting response.
Additional:
MACHINE the silver box has four encoders for paramaters in real time (assignable and transmit MIDI CC) called DC1-4, a retro design numeric pad for parameters entry and finally a big rotary encoder for data change value.
Behind there is a power DC input (common 6v with negative center) the 2×16 LCD contrast backlight pot, Audio OUT and IN (for filter process) and classical midi I/OVOICE two main modes: polyphonic or monophonic with possible Legato play with Portamento
A total of three Oscillators are available each with five different waveforms: Triangle, Sawtooth, PULSE PWM, mixed or Noise. The three Oscillators have their own DETUNE ratio and can be all pitch hard synched and Ringmodulated (if flagged for an oscillator it will modulate the previous one) and each has a Delay Start to give a kind of Echo effect.
The original SID had a high noise-level for various reasons, the sidstation isolated SOME of this using some dedicated buses, but still prepare to have some background noise.
C64 LIVE DEMO – SID bassline (commodore cynthcart mssiah prophet64)
For all you C64 fans out there:
“Live demo of one of my songs.
Bassline is played by an good old C64 equipped with Cynthcart.
Tune is called “we ain’t finished yet” and has been featured on DEAD PIXELS long play.
In 2009 I began experimenting with SID chiptune (built-in sound generator chip of Commodore 64), and Cynthcart to create a blend of original 8bit sound from the 80’s and Rock music. ”
