Reaktor: Boite Diabolique vs Konkreet Performer
Background information:
The Boite Diabolique is a Reaktor sampler instrument I’ve worked on for a long time without ever really getting anywhere with it, partly because it had too complex an interface. Once I saw Konkreet Performer I realised that it might offer a new way to approach the instrument and this is kind of a first marker of progress at a simplified KP-controlled interface.
I’m not sure the way I have things mapped really makes sense. It actually turns out to be quite a hard problem and I think it will take some more time & effort to get it right.
But maybe it will be of interest anyway.

The ELECTRIBE-MX is a major step up in power and quality from the original ElecTribe series of dance music sequencer/synthesizers from Korg. The EMX-1 comes in a sturdy metal chassis with larger back-lit LCD display, expanded memory, voices & multitimbrality, more real-time controllers and vacuum tubes! Effects, Motion Sequencing, and Pattern length have also been expanded. And a new ribbon controller and slider have been added, providing a remarkable realtime interface for accessing the powerful arpeggiator.
Starting with its synth engine, the EMX-1 uses MMT synthesis (Multi Modeling Technology) which offers sixteen different oscillator algorithms, providing powerful analog synthesis models as well as sophisticated additive, PCM, chord, unison, combination, wave shaping, formant models and more. The built-in PCM library includes 207 drum PCM sounds and 76 synth PCM sounds ready for immediate use, ranging from powerful kicks and snares through amazingly unique organic sounds. External audio signals can be manipulated using the Comb Filter oscillator algorithm, and then further processed by the internal filter and effects. The EMX-1 allows you to create up to nine drum parts, five synth parts, plus accent parts that let you add dynamic accents to the drum and synth parts (for a total of 16 parts). Each part features extensive LFO and EG modulation. Each algorithm of the synthesis engine has two realtime adjustable parameters, plus some other menu-based parameters like waveform type, or chord quality. The brand-new filter lets you chose Low Pass, High Pass, Band Pass or Band Pass Plus.
The two Vacuum tubes (Valve Force Circuitry) create an analog tube circuit to add warmth and presence to your sounds. The tube gain knob adjusts the level of the output signal passing through the vacuum tubes, creating dynamic sounds with the distinctive tonal quality that only tubes deliver. Three stereo effect processors are available for simultaneous use. Each part can be independently routed to any of the three effects processors, and you can even use the Chain function to link multiple effects in series. Each processor offers 16 effect types including reverb, delay, flanger and chorus, tempo-based delay, talking modulator, grain shifter, decimator and more. The edits you make to each of the effects processors can be saved with each pattern.
As for the sequencing capabilities, up to 256 patterns can be created and stored to the internal memory. The EMX-1 ships with 196 assorted patterns covering house, hip-hop, R&B, electronica, drum n bass, techno, trance and more. You can combine patterns, add mute data and knob movements to create up to 64 songs, the EMX-1 ships with 3 demo songs. Favorite patterns can be assigned to Pattern Sets for instant access. Data can be quickly saved and loaded via SmartMedia cards. Realtime recording lets you record phrases as you perform, and step recording allows you to input the timing, pitch and duration one note at a time. Motion Sequencing records your realtime knob tweaks and plays them back as part of the pattern. Two types of motion sequence are provided; one for effects and one for parts, and you can also edit the value of individual steps. Up to 24 motion sequences can be used in a single pattern, allowing you to control virtually every sound parameter. And, using Auto BPM detection, the EMX-1 can follow the tempo of an external audio source. You can also use Tap Tempo to input the beat, set the tempo internally, or sync up to an external MIDI clock.

Richie Hawtin presents Plastikman Live 1.5
Richie Hawtin’s iconic alter-ego Plastikman will embark on a full live tour in late-2011 in a new upgraded 1.5 format as it continues to evolve and push technology & live performance forward.
Plastikman is arguably one of the only live shows around where all aspects of the performance – music, lighting, audio, visuals and real-time audience interaction via the SYNK App – are controlled by a single on-stage performer. The Plastikman live experience has been developed by the electronic visionary Richie Hawtin, Derivative & his production team over the past ten years. In 2010, readers of the largest electronic music portal Resident Advisor voted Plastikman as the Ê»number oneʼ live electronic show of the year.
Richie Hawtinʼs Plastikman creation returned in 2010 and debuted its new look at Timewarp in Mannheim in March of that year. This version toured festivals the world over, establishing an unrivalled reputation as one of the most spectacular electronic live shows of all time, and quickly united a new generation of music fans with those who had followed the Plastikman project from its groundbreaking innovations in the 1990s. The Plastikman logo once again has returned to the forefront of the electronic movement as EDM (electronic dance music) fever gripped North America and Plastikman performed acclaimed shows at Electric Daisy Carnival and Canadaʼs Mutek.
Hawtin and his team have continued to develop and evolve the show – incorporating brand new Plastikman music, visuals and interactive technologies. Plastikman Live 1.5 appears next with a debut show in Ibiza at Amnesia for the ‘I Want My MTV’ concert series (August 5 2011), followed by a performance in New York City for the Electric Zoo festival on Memorial Day weekend (September 2 2011) before the European tour begins in Budapest at Hungary’s Bonusz festival in October.
The updates of the show have once again been created within Hawtin’s fully-collaborative lighting, visual and interactive team: Ali Demirel & Jarrett Smith of Derivative (TouchDesigner visuals); Matthias Vollrath (lighting integrations); Jeremy Jacobs (JPLS) & Johannes Kramer (sonic upgrades); and Robert Hexler & Bryan McDade (interactivity).
As with all previous dates, Plastikman Live will be fully interactive for any fans with the free SYNK iPhone application, which itself has been relaunched with new features including a live chat, live behind-the-curtain camera feed and more interactive elements, making the show one of the only genuinely interactive concert experiences in the world today.
Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman states: “I’m incredibly excited to finally take Plastikman on its first standalone tour. These dates will represent the last opportunities for fans to catch Plastikman Live in its current form: the 1.5 version of the show we’ve spent nearly a year of fine-tuning. After that, Plastikman will be returning to the shadows to begin work on a brand new 2.0 concept. The fall tour will be full of surprises, and the performance will continue to be spontaneous and unique for every show — the way I believe live music should be performed in 2011.”
Support on the tour will come from Minus artists including Marco Carola, Magda, Gaiser and Ambivalent – with full line-ups for each date to be announced shortly.
