The Grain Science iPad synth has been updated with Chorus and new synth options
Wooji Juice has updated Grain Science , its software synth for the iPad, adding a new chorus effect and additional synth options.
Grain Science is ‘built on similar principles of granular synthesis, but is vastly more powerful’, according to Wooji Juice. Unlike many “experimental” granular apps, Grain Science combines it with traditional synthesis techniques to make a hybrid synthesiser.
Here’s what’s new in Grain Science 1.2:
- New: Chorus FX unit
- New: Pulse Width Modulation blend mode
- New: Wave list shows a count of how many instruments use each wave
- New: More musician-friendly BPM system, goes up to 180bpm with 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 options (old system can still be selected)
- New: Multiple-octave chord arpeggiation
- New: Swipe to delete unwanted audio from wave & audio import lists
- New: “Reed” built-in wave
- New: 6 additional built-in instruments
- New: Tube Resonance Bass can be programmed. Note: It can bite! Slow, gentle programs are recommended, unless you want artefacts!
- New: UI improvement — swap FX units by dragging them around by their names
- New: Setting to choose whether recording is hold-to-record or tap-to-start/tap-to-stop
- New: Mini VU meter on recording button during recording (or, in hold-to-record mode, tap to toggle on/off)
- New: Cropping selections now snap to zero-crossings for smoother results
- Improved: Easier to see when a cropping selection is about to begin
- Improved: Avoids “popping” while installing/uninstalling FX units
- Improved: Slightly more useful naming for newly-created instruments
- Fix: Crash bug when mapping certain kinds of parameter in otherwise-unmodified instruments

I divide my live set up in to two general sections: prerecorded loops and live instruments. I like to be able to place effects on each section independently, so in order to achieve this, I route my prerecorded loops to an audio track (commonly referred to as a “Dummy track,” and I route my Live instruments right to the master output. The advantage to doing this is that I can mess around with my prerecorded loops in a myriad of ways while leaving my live instruments (soft synths, vocals, OP-1, melodica, guitar) unaffected, and vice versa. The Master FX Rack that I am sharing with you today is kept on that Dummy Audio track that all my loops are routed to.
So, I use this rack to do high and low pass filtering, add some reverb, bit crush the signal a bit, and put a subtle flanger over the mix for movement. It also has a control for a beat repeater, which is nice for glitches and stutters. And the final component is a combination high pass filter and delay. As you turn up that knob, the signal is simultaneously hi passed with a delay on top. Turn it all the way up and you only hear the delay and none of the original tracks. I find this useful for ending one song and beginning another. These effects are great for keeping a groove interesting. Sometimes just some movement in certain frequencies or little effect can be enough to keep the audience engaged without disrupting the flow of your songs. Now of course this rack has the ability to completely mangle your audio, so if that’s what the situation calls for, let her rip! I have found its true strength lies in a subtle dose. Bluenoise Plugins has released The Upright, a virtual piano instrument for Windows.
The Upright is a great sounding upright piano recorded in a professional studio. The piano recorded is a Hellas. It’s not the most expensive thing made but this particular piano has already been used for several major artist because of its great sound.
The Upright features
- Interface with a smooth look and controls for microphone outputs, a cutoff filter, chorus, leslie, reverb, delay, ADSR and main output.
- Recorded with 4 microphones (2 sets consisting of Neumann KM184 and AKG C414 B-XLS), merged into 2 outputs (left and right). The microphones were sent into a Universal Audio 4010 micpres, then through pristine RME converters into Nuendo
- Samples are raw 24 bit, 44.1 kHz wave files, 4 different velocity layers.
- The sound is left unaltered, this piano can go from sweet sounding to lo-fi.
- Effects included: cutoff filter with resonance, a built in leslie with different speeds, a soft chorus, a great sounding reverb for more room and a delay to create that John Lennon sound we love.
- Easy to use with a logical workflow.
- Includes 10 presets included from the classic upright sound to really old Lennon sounding stuff like Imagine.
- MIDI Learn makes it super easy to use an external controller to control the plugin.

NEW ALBUM FROM DAFT PUNK IN THE MAKING !
Seems like a scoop, but rumors around a new Daft Punk album, seems to be accurate. Here are the details:
Overnight, the interwebs went into overdrive about a tantalising comment from funk/disco legend Nile Rodgers to the Houston Culture Map about elusive robots Daft Punk: “Those guys are great. They’re coming to my apartment on Monday and we’re going to talk about making a new record together.”
This morning we were able to go straight to the source ahead of the Chic Australian tour and press Nile Rodgers about the Daft Punk comment. The rub? They’re definitely making a record together and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter had just left his place…
“We were just jamming at my house, but it’s gonna be proper and real,” Rodgers told us down the line. “They came over to my today around breakfast time and it’s now evening I basically had to almost kick them out. We were having so much fun just in an informal setting that we decided to make it formal. And it’s very formal. It’s gonna be amazing.”
Naturally, we asked the man to go deeper. “It’s funny I’ve known Daft Punk for some time now but we were never really close – we never got a chance to hang out with each other, we would just meet in passing,” he happily continued. “So today was the first chance we had to spend hours and hours together and it was just so awesome. Every track they played I just ran across the room and got my guitar and started playing and we were all dancing around my dining room having the time of our lives. It was something that was meant to be. It was interesting how Thomas said to me: ‘It’s funny Nile, it’s like we’ve completed the circle’. We’ve always just met, just had a moment to talk and then finally today we just said, this is something that has to happen.
“The best projects I’ve ever been involved in have always been like that: we vibe on an artistic level first – same thing happened with me and Bowie. Like Bowie, they can speak in abstract terms and I know exactly what they’re talking about. So it was funny, at one point I said, ‘You’ve been talking for two hours and you haven’t actually said exactly what you’re talking about, but I know what you mean.’ It’s all the nuances of music and who a person is as an artist, concepts, where that concept is now in the arch of life – all of that type of stuff, which is what I really understand.”
As hard as we pushed, getting Rodgers to talk in absolutes was no easy sell – but surely this is enough to make Daft Punk fanatics sing hallelujahs.

Novation TWITCH DJ Controller – Road Test

In the first installment of Road Test, Abe brings the Novation TWITCH back into the Dubspot lab after a tour in Germany where he utilized the new DJ controller as his primary DJ equipment. rePatcher is an Arduino shield that allows you to “repatch” your Max/MSP or Pure Data patches with a 6 x 6 patchbay matrix. It also has 6 general purpose control knobs for modifying parameters in your patch. Since it does all of this over USB, it can be hacked to work with any other program that can accept a serial stream.
