Sequence – First Look of new MIDI sequencer app for iPhone
Sequence is a new euclidean MIDI sequencer for iPhone // Launching 04 March 2013
The circular patterns of notes in Sequence are generated by an algorithm created by Eric Bjorklund. Originally developed for timing sequences on spallation neutron source accelerators, the musical potential of the algorithm was first recognized by Godfried Toussaint, a researcher interested in musical geometry at McGill University.
The algorithm finds the most ideal temporal distribution of pulses given a number of steps, giving a recognizable performance of western and African rhythms when input with odd and even pulses and steps. In summary, it makes great polyrhythmic techno.
Sequence 1.0 features a collection of about 30 samples for your techno pleasure. The app also sports MIDI output to pipe to your favorite iOS sampler, DAW, or hardware device.
On the roadmap for version 2.0, we’d like to introduce Audiobus support, functions for recording sessions, and the ability to import your own samples. We’ll also probably add OSC and support the iPhone 5 screen.

I’ll admit some some envy of those at NAMM making amazing drones and sequences on the Buchla Music Easel. so I decided to do my best with the Arp2600 and my Make Noise Rene. I’ll also admit the the Rene is so good at what it does I barely touched it and out came some of the best music I’ve heard from my Arp.
Time machine: Roland Juno 60 Analog Synthesizer Overview
The Roland Juno-60 is a popular analogue 61-key polyphonic synthesizer introduced by Roland Corporation in 1982 and a successor to the slightly earlier Juno-6. Like its predecessor, the Juno-60 has some digital enhancements, used only for clocking the oscillators and for saving and loading patches. This instrument was succeeded by the Roland Juno-106 in 1984.
Roland was losing market share with the Juno-6 in competition against the Korg Polysix. Related in features and price-class, the Polysix featured external control and patch memory, which the Juno-6 lacked. These features were quickly added to the Juno-6’s design, which sonically and architecturally did not change notably between the two versions, and then released as the Juno-60.
Gestural Control of Modular Synthesizer via Kinect
Custom software enables gestural control using Kinect and PC. Hand movements in the X and Y axes are translated into MIDI signals which generate control voltages, allowing 2 dimensional morphing of waveforms in a “Morphing Terrarium” module, processed through modular moog. Recorded in the superterranian lair of the Robotmakers.

Korg recently released an update to the monotribe OS and there has been a lot of chatter on the Muffwiggler forum (click the link for details on where to get the OS, how to install it and enable the CV/Gate)
The main drawback is that in order to get this to work you need a 4 pin mini jack. I dont have any of those around so I figured I’d just add some jacks.
Here’s a few pics of the install and solder points, and a quick video demo of the monotribe being driven by a ModSeq (sorry about the camera audio).
Some points to note, first I wired up also for CV/Gate output, this is not yet fully working, I’m hoping it will in the future so I figured I’d wire it up while i was there. The Gate out does work at least (its just the sync out really)
It also seems that the sync in jack is switching, so that if there isn’t a jack inserted to sync in then you wont be able to advance the sequencer with the gate in (like you could with the cable) The work around for this is that you can use the gate out (or the sync out jack) to clock your external seq then just mult that to an envelope and send it all back to the monotribe cv/gate ins. I may check this out later to see if I can add a switch.

Sequential Circuits Prophet 600
A demo with the SC Prophet 600. Drumcomputer Roland TR 808.
As usual a multitrack recording with some FX.
The first commercially available synth to implement MIDI!! It’s a fun synth. Its big brother is the legendary Prophet 5. The P600 is very affordable today and is a great buy. Models with the newest software will enjoy polyphonic MIDI implementation and up to 100 memory patches to store their own sounds! The sound of the Prophet 600 is brighter and harsher than that of a Juno 106 but still just as funky.
The P600 has two oscillators per voice with sawtooth, triangle and variable pulse waveforms. The oscillators can be individually tuned or synced together. Similar quality VCF and VCA sections from the Prophet 5 can be found here too! The P5’s Poly-Mod section has also been passed onto the P600.
The P600 is extremely versatile and easy to use! Its best functions include the onboard arpeggiator, 2-track sequencer and poly-modulation. The P600 is great for creating analog effects, swells and drones. It has a cool glide effect and has very flexible modulation possibilities!
