E-mu Planet Phatt G-Funk track

August 8, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on E-mu Planet Phatt G-Funk track

E-mu’s synth module designed with classic hip hop, modern R&B, acid jazz and trip hop in mind! All the sounds you need to create PHATT tracks! Tight basslines and thumpin’ 808 kicks, this box has it all. It also includes all the common lead and rhythmic sounds in hip hop, rap and R&B. The BEATS mode is great for generating grooves and ideas that you can jam with! They have very analog-like controls such as filters, envelopes and LFO modulation effects! And everything is MIDI controllable!

“I’ve been looking for a Planet Phatt for quite a long time and I finally got one for a good price. Here is a quick demo track I put together, using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 to sequence the different parts. All sounds are coming from the Planet Phatt, with some outboard compression and reverb.”

A classic combination explored, details below:

This was one of the first times I’d played the Modular/Mini combination together. Getting the CV and triggers set up took a little doing. I even had to build an interface circuit for the S-trig connection before I could get it all to work properly.

John Bowen Solaris – Modulating the Decimator with Envelope Generator

August 7, 2013 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on John Bowen Solaris – Modulating the Decimator with Envelope Generator

“So I went to GC today to “test drive” the King Korg to get my free T-Shirt. I was having lots of fun controlling its decimator in real time. I asked the sales person if you could control it from an EG and the reply was “I don’t think so”.

Ah, but you can with the Solaris. Here’s a simple patch using the “Jaws” waveform (supersaw) while I tweak EG2 to modulate the decimator. Not anything super musical, but just a quick demonstration of just a taste of the Solaris’ modulation capabilities.”

Background video description:

A fellow VSE’r was wanting to know how to sync his JP-8’s arpeggiator to his DMX. I don’t know of any way to do that directly without another piece of gear in between to convert clock pulses.

The Garfield Electronics Modulator can program trigger pulse rhythms up to 2 measures synched to 24ppq DIN, 24, 48 or 96ppq phone jack.

Analogue Drums has launched BlackSmith, a virtual drum instrument for Native Instruments Kontakt.

BlackSmith is a modern metal workhorse with an aggressive yet toneful sound. This kit will lay an unshakable foundation for any metal track, or any other genre where a tight punchy articulate kit is called for.

BlackSmith gives you several mic layers to blend to your taste, easily taking the sound of the kit from clean and tight to spacious or dirty with the push of a fader. Three swappable snare variations help fit the kit to your track.

The kit we sampled is a top-of-the-line Sonor SQ2 Acrylic set, with three snare options, and classic Zildjian A Custom cymbals. The kit was sampled in Melbourne’s Sing Sing South studio, a medium sized tracking room.

BlackSmith features

  • Multi-sampling: each kit component contains up to 7 velocity layers for expressive detail and dynamics, and 6x round-robin hits for every single zone for realistic performances.
  • Mic layers: 6x individually controllable mic layers: Close mics, Overheads, Room mics, Smash mic, Kick Sub, and Snare-Bottom
  • eKit mode switch to ‘eKit’ mode when using a Roland V-Drum kit, or leave set to ‘Keyboard mode’ for direct MIDI sequencing. The layout is General MIDI (GM) compatible.
  • Output routing: stereo and multi-channel output versions provided.
  • Sensitivity control: increase the sensitivity of the kit for more intricate and subtle performances or leave it set to full dynamic range for heavier tracks.
  • Presets: for quickly accessing different sounds.
  • Trigger maps: for sound replacement: kick, snare, toms – each with separated mic layers

BlackSmith is available to purchase for $29 USD. Requires Kontakt 4.2+ full retail version.

Background video description:

after a year of working on the Buchla System 200 power supply I kinda gave up on the original power supply and have resorted to using a new 200e power source. however it doesn’t produce the +24vdc for the 265 module. This is just a little test to see how things function, before i dive into work on the easel a bit more.

The Euro Rack system is used to synthesize the perc and drums and also sends clock and random voltages to the Buchla envelope follower. Easel generates the sequence bit, and the 259 creates the the digeridoo-ish drone.
