Despite already having been a hit in its initial prototype form in Frankfurt, MFB engineers and programmers Manfred Fricke and Sebastien Preller have seen fit to add another synth voice to the hand-built production version so that it now features 16 high-quality analogue drum instruments. These include two bass drums, snare drum, rim shot, cymbal, hi-hat, and clap, plus low-tom, mid-tom, and hi-tom. SCI Prophet 5 vs DSI Prophet 08 Test
INHALT goes hands on comparing two classic synths, details below:
This is the comparison I think most of our friends have been interested in. Our Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 is a revision 3.2 and has factory midi. It’s in incredibly good condition and has been calibrated fully, thus the tuning tends to be a lot more stable than on unserviced Prophet 5’s. Because of the MIDI interface we have been able to send the same MIDI sequence from the MPC 2000XL to both the Prophet 08 and the Prophet 5 simultaneously. Both synths were recorded straight into Pro Tools HD via a Precision 8 mic pre and a 192 HD IO audio interface.
Unlike the Oberheim OB 8 comparison, getting patches to sound similar between the Prophet 08 and the Prophet 5 was a lot more work. It felt many times like chasing a moving target–you would modify one synth a little and then bounce to the previous one to get it closer … so on and so forth. However, we were again surprised by the Prophet 08’s ability to get remarkably close to the general tonal characteristic of the infamous Prophet 5.
A couple of observations became apparent during the comparison: it’s very very obvious that the Prophet 5 uses analog components. The VCO’s move around a lot more, especially on held chords and it’s not a linear movement. Even with programming, the Prophet 08 has a more predictable frequency movement. We used the slop function set to the max and it still wasn’t quiet enough to get it close.
Also, this can be observed with envelope times as well. The Prophet 5 feels like each voice is somewhat discrete and exhibits slightly different envelope times for each stage (i.e. ADSR). I’ve simulated this somewhat by routing sample and hold to modulate the envelope stages on the Prophet 08 but it still feels somewhat “obvious” as a programming trick rather than the true discrete voicing as on the Prophet 5. That is not saying anything bad about the Prophet 08, but rather, that the 08 is a lot more precise (digital envelopes vs CEM3310…) in this department than the 5.
The UNISON mode on both synths is very very different. On the 5, it sounds a lot more dialed in especially considering gain staging whereas on the Prophet 08, provisions have to be taken to bring the VCA envelope modulation down so as not to create internal clipping. It also feels like the envelopes work differently on the 08 when in UNISON mode than on the Prophet 5. This is not a comment regarding legato/non legato modes but rather the “feel” of the envelopes themselves. However, I have heard commentary that the 08 unison is like the unison mode on the Roland Juno 106, and as a former user of a 106, I can safely say that it is nothing like that. It’s just a different feeling unison mode that requires a little bit more work on the programming end.

Korg Volca Beats and Bass gets Mangled by Elektron Octatrack

I wanted to show how the Elektron Octatrack can take any audio and manipulate it in real time. Korg Volca Beats and Bass are routed into the Octatrack’s stereo inputs separately. By pressing YES on the Octatrack, I can capture the incoming audio and start mangling and re-arranging the recorded loop on the Octatrack. Sending MIDI out from Octatrack into Volca Beats and sync out into the Volca Bass.
I have created 2 Parts inside the Octatrack. Part 1 has got THRU machines where I can add FX to incoming audio. Part 2 has 2 Flex recording buffers assigned to it. So, I record the incoming audio on Part 1 and start manipulating the recording on Part 2.
Personally, I found the Volca Beats very limiting and the overall sound is not for me. The Bass one however is satisfying…
But for the price of them you can’t go wrong.

My 2008 album Twenty Systems has been reissued at last! So if you have been looking for it out there in the shops or online since it sold out a few years ago – well you can get it here (if you are in USA you can pre-order it here). The release is exactly the same as the original with the exception of a few minor tweaks that niggled me about the original (but the content and audio are identical). Thanks to Steve Malins, Darren at Cargo, and Paul Agar for helping to make it happen this time round!
Electronic music news from Gitane Demone, Frozen Plasma, The Actor and more
Gitane Demone’s brand new solo album “The Reflecting Shadow” is out now on Manic Depression. Arrangements on the album were executed by Jean Paul Garnier aka Loopool. It’s the first new material for Demone since “Attach and Detach” (which she recorded with her daughter’s band Crystelles) was released in 2010.
For those who are to young to have known, Gitane Demone was a member of Christian Death in the 1980s, and is currently a solo artist.
Out now via Realmforge / Kalypso for Xbox 360 and PC is “Dark”, a 3rd person vampire stealth game. Included on the soundtrack for the game is a song sung by Sonja Kraushofer (L’âme Immortelle, Persephone and Coma Divine). The song furthermore got the remix treatment by Thomas Rainer (Nachtmahr).
Available now for free download is a full version of “Herz” (Intersection Mix) taken of the upcoming Frozen Plasma single “Herz”. That single will hold remixes by Nachtmahr, Neuroticfish, Rotersand, Rob Dust as well as some exlusive bonus material.
Out now is “Unreal Personality”, a 7″ flexi-disc by the Dutch minimal wave project The Actor that emerged from the Dutch home taping scene of the early 1980s. The Actor were the duo Marcel Reimer (vocals, keyboards) and Sander Horsthuis (keyboards) and it was formed in Breda, The Netherlands in late 1981. Influences were DAF, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode and Fad Gadget.
The cassette label Trumpett signed the band to the label in April 1982. Their first, self-produced album was released in September 1982 as “Exploded View”. The edition of 400 copies sold out within six months. The track featured on this flexi-disc, “Unreal Personality”, is the opening track of “Exploded View”. It has been remastered from its original analog source tape for best possible sound reproduction.

Incorporating processors which you may intellectually reserve for audio use only – such as waveshapers – to modify control voltage generators, in this instance the Envelope Generator which opens the Timbral Gate via the M25 waveshaper, can lead to results you may not expect, and just may like.
