The Korg MS-20 Mini’s filter being overdriven is a monster
Within the last year a new generation of analog mono-synths have appeared on the market from larger manufacturers like Korg, Moog, Novation, Arturia, etc. This is indication that people are re-discovering the beauties of crafting sounds via analog subtractive synthesis in the 21st century.
These recent designs retain the quality of a pure analog signal path but control voltage elements (EG, LFO, Keyboard, Midi to CV) are reaping the modern benefits of advanced micro-controllers and smaller components. One design feature that has been included within almost every synth within this new wave of monosynth is some form of overdrive to give the sound an extra aggressive, growly, shrieking distortion. The Arturia Minibrute has the “Brute Factor”, Moog Sub Phatty has the “Multi-Drive”, the Novation Bass Station II has onboard filter distortion, and so on.
Trends in music shape the features of musical electronics and vice versa, but we wanted to highlight a quality of the new Korg MS-20 Mini that is inherent in the original as well. The sound of the MS-20 filters being overdriven is legendary and thus many clones in various formats have been spawned. This is especially heard in techno, IDM, dubstep, noise, and experimental music.
This demo shows off just how the MS-20 mini growls, shrieks, hisses, gets nasty, and is the real thing. The patch we have setup is audio from the headphone jack being fed back into the signal processer section and the routed to the total control up top. Having the flexibility of a resonant high pass and low pass filter allows you to fine tune the grit and sputtering distortion this synth is capable of and always was. These are certainly not the only sounds it can make, but a finer point worth mentioning.

Celluloide recently found a few video live recordings in a dark corner of the Synthélabo. Among them was a totally unreleased version of “Seven and Forever” taken from the album “Naïve Heart”.
New EP with Foxx and Hulkkonen, featuring remixes by David Lynch
John Foxx and Jori Hulkkonen, the prolific Finnish electronic producer and DJ, have a collaborative EP, European Splendour, on the way on August 19 via Sugarcane Recordings.
If that wasn’t good news enough, it’s set to feature two remixes by none other than David Lynch (whose own LP The Big Dream is out next Monday, July 15). And for a record already heavily laden with big names, for good measure they’ve got Jonathan Barnbrook, designer of Bowie’s The Next Day cover and frequent Foxx associate, on artwork duties (which itself features a sculpture by Foxx. Blimey, this is getting a bit much now…) – have a look at the vinyl cover above, with the CD sleeve below.
It’s Foxx and Hulkkonen’s third collaboration, following the singles ‘Dislocated’ in 2005 and ‘Never Been Here Before’ in 2007, and has its genesis, “when John Foxx And The Maths played a live show at the Roundhouse in London with me supporting as a DJ – and I also ended up on stage to play on John’s song, ‘Underpass’,” says Hulkkonen.
Braids – Heavy Modulation Wavetable Overview
This overview is an exploration into the versatility of the Braids’ wavetable synthesis using heavy modulation. The Timbre, Color, FM, Trigger inputs are being fed intense modulation. Close encounter with Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 12
A second Prophet 12 demo from INHALT, details below:
For this next installment of demonstrations, I’ve recorded the more atmospheric, etherial, vocal, and ambient patches from the Prophet 12. What’s wonderful about this synth is the fact that envelope times have been designed to give a wide range of times. This means anything from the most percussive sounds to absurdly long release times are possible. As such, making evolving tonal beds is a breeze and they are sure to find a home in any sound designers tool box when working for film, television, and experimental sound.
Just like the previous demonstration, no sequencing nor external effects have been used. Everything you hear was recorded through a Neve Portico Pre Amp into a Digidesign 192 HD io and assembled in Pro Tools.
Experiemental: Blue Beat
Blue Beat is a collective, collaborative, choreographic, giant orchestra. By moving over the instruments, registered by a camera, different sounds are triggered from a music computer. At the same time a video beamer mapped to paintings on the wall lit up as a visual reference for the performers. Blue Beat is a part of the Mini Maker Space project at Sweden’s National Museum For Technology And Science and one of 3 projects invented and built by Håkan Lidbo and a team of collaborators. Per-Olov Jernberg did the programming and built the electronics, Tom Walston did the paintings and Frida Vega Salomonsson took the photos in the film below. The project can been experienced at the museum June- December 2013.
