Cool sound textures generated by SoundMashine

November 14, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Cool sound textures generated by SoundMashine

SoundMashine is a granular synthesis based sound sampling and sequencing app for the iPhone and iPad. This video demonstrates some of the sound textures that can be generated from a basic input source, in this case the tapping of a table surface and rattling of a cup.

Description

SoundMashine is a granular synthesis based sound sampling and sequencing instrument. Fully utilising touch gestures to provide a fast and easy to use compositional tool.  The app records sound using the devices built-in microphone, then using a beat slicing process divides the sound and automatically assigns the slices to each of the 16 screen tiles. Each tile has its own set of parameters allowing you to adjust window size, playback rate, pitch, feedback, delay and delay modulation, all of which are easily set by the swipe of a finger. Each parameter listed can also be randomised between a set of assignable values. This flexibility allows you to build up a palette of sounds which can be stretched and processed to the extreme allowing rich and diverse creations far removed from the input source .. if so desired.

In addition the built-in sequencer allows you to record patterns of tiles that can be played back at different speeds, again using simple touch gestures. If you add in the parameter randomisation functions to this, diverse and changeable sequences can be produced. With its flexibility for working with sound at different pitches, rates and sequencer speeds, SoundMashine lends itself well to a variety of compositional paradigms, from beat based through to drone or noise based music forms.

Sigur Ros Recording “Ambient” New Album

November 12, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Sigur Ros Recording “Ambient” New Album

Sigur Ros have revealed that they are to release a new studio album next spring. The new album will be their first since 2008’s Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. It arrives in addition to their live album and concert film Inni, which was released recently. You can watch a clip from the film here.

While describing the new album, the blissed out Icelandic troubadours revealed a surprising shift in creative direction, describing the new album as “introverted”, “floaty and minimal”, “ambient” and a “slow take-off toward something”.

The Wall Street Journal goes on to state that “for a visitor who heard a preliminary recording in which Mr. Birgisson’s falsetto was surrounded by rich choral voices and what sounded like a pipe organ, the music was thrilling.”

TimeFactor Self Oscillation Drone

October 26, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on TimeFactor Self Oscillation Drone

Background information:

This is a drone created with an Eventide TimeFactor and a Roland SRV-3030. Sound was generated by the TimeFactor’s self oscillation – nothing was plugged into the input. The output of the first delay unit was connected to the second, and mono output of the second was connected to the A input of the SRV-3030. All adjustments were performed live by hand.

Hardware feature:

The SRV3030 is a smartly styled 1U processor with stereo analogue I/O on both balanced jacks and XLRs. MIDI In and Out/Thru sockets are fitted, and on the the SRV3030D model only, there is digital S/PDIF I/O on phono connectors (but no AES-EBU on XLRs).  Control jacks are available for an optional footswitch (bypass) and an expression pedal for controlling input level.

Though the SRV3030 is a highly sophisticated digital reverb unit, the front-panel controls are mercifully few and are mainly dedicated to single tasks rather than being multi-function. The display makes use of instrument icons to show what category a reverb belongs to, and all the editable parameters may be accessed as a single list — there are no forking menus.

At the heart of the SRV3030 are two reverb processors, A and B. These may be used separately as mono in, stereo out processors, or combined in series or parallel. In addition, there’s a pre-reverb compressor within the normal reverb algorithm, plus two further processing blocks, one for the RSS stereo width expansion (based on the algorithms used in Roland’s dedicated RSS 3D sound processor) and an effects block based on modulated delay effects. The effects block may be placed after either or both reverb blocks but, oddly, it can’t be positioned before the reverb input to add ‘spin’ or ‘swirl’ to the reverb.

Smart TNRi iPad glitch experiment

October 23, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Smart TNRi iPad glitch experiment

This is a nice experiment by I believe I know what is going on here, but can you figure it out?

“Can you figure it out? This strange track uses a nonstandard technique to produce sonic glitches at several points through the song. Hint: It’s not changing the tempo ( which I only do at the very end. ) I think I am the first to discover, or film this trick on YouTube? It’s called a Valse because it ( at least begins ) in 12 beat timing.

Sorry my hands are blocking the view in some parts, but I can’t exactly make them transparent 😉 This requires multiple fingers to do it well, and can’t easily be done on the Hardware Tenori due to the difference in menu systems.”

Electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick performs at Berlin’s 11th Transmediale, a festival of Experimental sound and visuals.

Subotnick combines the famed Buchla synthesizer, which he helped develop in the 60s, with Ableton Live, to reach what he says is, “a performance that is made of gestures, and that is completely immediate.”

The American Morton Subotnick is one of the great pioneers of synthesizer music. His most famous piece Silver Apples From The Moon is a classic of the new electronic music. In Bremen, accompanied Tony Martin, who experimented since the 60s with abstract images projected light from the concert with his projections. In the opening act of the Belgian Jurgen de Blonde with his project Koehn is heard.
