Xmas gift from Ohm Force
That’s the Ohm Force 2009 Christmas gift for the music production scene: the Performer Edition of their Symptohm:Melohman powersynth is now freeware, you can download freely download it from here. What are you waiting? Don’t be the last to grab it…
This ‘Performer Edition’ is a simplified version of our Symptohm:Melohman powersynth, especially made for live use – but being also handy at the studio. The core of the synth, its oscillators and all the filters are there: it’s the same audio engine of the ‘normal’ version. The only difference is that they’re all already programmed/fixed for each one of the (up to 1200!) patches from Symptohm’s sound library, the result being a simple and straight forward interface.

- ADSR with curves for the depth of the LFO.
- Low/hi depth button
- LFOs can start when hitting a key (GATE), when you hit play in your sequencer (FIRST) and start at any point (FREE).
- LFO destinations: pitch, pw , cutoff and resonance.
- 4×16 step sequencers: 11 BPM rates, manual rate and c64 rate (The BPM rates only work when you set the sequence to BPM mode, in Manual and c64 rates all the sequencers have the same rate).
- 1 waveform sequencer with 7 waveforms (saw, triangle, pulse, pitched noise, rm triangle, rm saw, rm pulse).
- 1 octave sequencer range from -3 to 4.
- 1 Octave and notes sequencer, notes from C to B and octave range -3 to 4.
- 1 Filter with a sequencer and envelope.
- Envelopes for Pitch, PulseWidth, Cutoff and Volume.
- Lofi effects, bitcrusher.
- Mono/Poly mode, Retrigger on/off.
38911 Bytes is available as a freeware VST instrument plug-in for Windows PC.

Out of the box synth
Perhaps the ultimate Xmas gift if you are short on cash
It’s not especially versatile or attractive – but this cardboard synth will at least make some interesting noises:
“A little and cheap amplifier i built using chewing gum paper as touchpads. The LEDs are synched with the beat. the harder you press on the touchpads, the less resistance your fingers have. this way you can control the beat (left side) or make queer noises (right side).”
Enjoy your holidays
Pure analog
Here’s an analog synth jam inspired by late 70’s & early 80’s electro dance music.
via synthjunk:
Midi clock & sequencing from MPC. Doepfer providing cv/gate step sequencing.
TR707 trigger out controlling Mono/Poly arpeggiator.
All synth sounds are 100% analog. Recorded with Ableton Live.
Absolutely awesone – Flash player Tenori on – you must test it
I just can´t stop playing around with this

Five free VSTs from Cakewalk!!!

Cakewalk has announced that it’s now offering it a bunch of free Windows music software, including synths and effects processors.
Here’s what Cakewalk has to say about each of the freebies:
- SFZ+ is rgc:audio’s SoundFont player sample-playback engine, packed in a professional VST/DXi instrument. Outstanding sound quality, stereo built-in effects, adjustable CPU/quality settings to adjust it to your hardware, fully multitimbral operation, multiple stereo outputs, several loading modes including direct-from-disk streaming and a beautiful interface make sfz+ the perfect choice for SoundFont users and professional composers.
- Square I offers the warmness and classic sound of the vintage analog synthesizers, combined with the fidelity and precision of a VST instrument. A simple synthesizer, oriented to the serious music enthusiast.
- Cakewalk Audio FX 1 is a series of real-time audio processing plug-ins. All Cakewalk Audio FX plug-ins are Microsoft DirectX- compatible, allowing you to use them with any digital audio software that supports DirectX – including Cakewalk SONAR and other Cakewalk applications.
- Cakewalk Audio FX 2. Audio FX 2 uses advanced processing algorithms to apply the classic sound and warmth of several different vintage guitar amplifiers and analog tape decks to your digital audio.
- Cakewalk Audio FX 3 SoundStage allows you to design acoustic environments in which to play back digital audio, resulting in unique, realistic reverb. Audio FX 3 Features Two Views: Performer’s View and Room View. To create the perfect room, just click and drag your mouse to move walls and change ceiling height. Choose from different microphones, and place them inside the room. Then assign each audio track to different “performer” positions to hear custom reverb on each track. When you’re finished, save your soundstage for other sessions, or use as a template for other designs. Audio FX 3 includes ready-to-use soundstages too.
Retro Musical Droid Arrives… from the Future
If HAL 9000 mated with R2-D2 and their electronic offspring was tutored by Kraftwerk it would probably end up something like the Bliptronic 5000 LED Synthesizer.

At once a minimalist musical plaything and a hardcore old-skool synthesizer, the Bliptronic defies categorization as it belts out 8-Bit style style tunes from its grid of glowing buttons.
You’ll notice sound similar to a retro Casiotone with an interface not unlike a simplified Yamaha TENORI-ON… if that makes any sense. Either way, once you start touching the keys of the Bliptronic you’ll be hooked by it’s simple pattern-based approach to music.
Product Features
- Unusual retro synthesizer is played with a grid of glowing buttons
- Create looping patterns and change them dynamically while playing
- Chain multiple units together and create more complex melodies
- One octave range. 8 notes can be played simultaneously
- 8 different old-skool synth sounding instruments to choose from
- Sounds created using FM waveform synthesis
- Set the BPM (beats per minute) from 60 to 180 in 20 BPM increments
- Built in speaker with headphone jack and line-out jack
- Front panel is constructed from brushed aluminum
- Includes, manual and 2 link cables for connecting additional Bliptronic units
- Requires 4 x AA batteries (not included)
Easy to use modular synthesis – BLOK
Introducing BLOK

[BLOK] has been designed as an easy to use modular synthesis environment. The makers say that the available processing blocks are simple and concise and there are no restrictions on how you hook things up.
[BLOK] was designed as a platform for teaching audio synthesis to students, so even beginners can get started building their own synthesizers and effects right away.
Features
- Classic synthesizer modules such as Oscillators, Filters, Envelopes and Effects
- Easy to use interface. Blok was originally created as an educational program to teach audiodesign principles. This means that each module is simple to understand.
- Connect everything. There are no limits on connecting blocks together.. if a block generates a signal, connect it up!
- Versatile DSP engine. Additive, Subtractive and FM synthesis are all possible. Let Blok be your synthesis swiss army-knife.
- Full undo/redo. Dont like what you have done? Go back to a time when you did!
- Low in cpu. Blok was made to run well even on low-end computers. On today’s machines, it tears up the track! This will let you make more complicated setups and get more bang for your synthesis buck.
Pricing and Availability:
Free download at the moment but only the buzz version is officially supported at this point. Standalone and VST versions can be downloaded for free at present but are still under construction.

Introducing Drone Lab

The Drone Lab is a 4 voice analog drone synth, rhythm generator and FX processor. It is capable of generating rich, textured soundscapes, hypnotic drones and complex rhythmic sequences. It features a series of filter and distortions circuits as well as an audio input jack. This allows it to be used as an effects processor for external audio signals.
Building a Drone Lab
The Drone Lab is being sold as a kit as well as in finished form.
Detailed build instructions will be posted here soon.
You’re welcome to buy the PCB and parts from us or build it all from scratch.
The Drone Lab plans are completely open source and available below. We encourage others to use and adapt the plans as they like.
