old school reunion is really what I would call old school electro hip hop and to my best judgment they are doing a good job doing so as well :-)

I think it is very refreshing to here how “osr” so successfully incorporate the traditional sounds of the 80’s and 90’s into their songs, which is not very common in today´s hip hop sounds. However, what disturbs me a little is that the drums does not really stand out in the mix – you do not get that really juicy damped sound of the bass drums, they feel a little to sterile

Conclusively, I like the vocals and the overall sound scape that “osr” has put into their mix, but I would give a little more love to the drum loops, both in terms of choice of sounds and its variation over the mix, some sounds does not feel as they belong their.

Worth listening to: Definitly, if you’re into hip hop

And One, the popular synth-pop band from Germany, formed in 1989 after Chris Ruiz and Steve Naghavi met in a Berlin disco. They were both fans of Belgian EBM music, so they decided to play together, using only a drum machine and two keyboards, like their musical idols Depeche Mode had. Working together they compiled a demo tape that producer Jor, who was planning on starting a sub-label off of Modern Music, happened to like. The duo met success rather quickly after that, as they were the first signed band to Machinery Records. In 1990 they released their first single, «Metalhammer».

Audio input for Reason – Introducing Hammer

March 18, 2008 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Audio input for Reason – Introducing Hammer

For those of you who have not come across Hammer before

Hammer is an audio input tool for Propellerhead’s Reason. It finally lets you route ASIO audio inputs into Reason rack for live processing: just adding a reverb, doing cool voice vocoding or guitar distorsion.

What is Hammer?

Technically speaking, Hammer is a standard ReWire application.
It hooks to Reason via the ReBirth Input Machine device so that creating such a device results in creating an instance of Hammer Device. Then, connecting the Hammer Input Panel opens the selected ASIO input and routes its signal into Reason’s rack.

Listen to Hammer

Here are two sample files recorded using Hammer and some effect patches included in the Hammer ReFill… Check them out!

Hammer and Guitars
[mp3 | ogg]

Hammer and Microphone
[mp3 | ogg]

As the Audio Input feature in Reason has been widely debated all over the web, we expect a lot of enthusiasm about our new tool. We’re so happy about it but, anyway, we want to stop your Hammer dreams and clearly state what Hammer is not that you could believe it will…

Good audio cards are needed!
Having like 200ms latency, Hammer is pratically unuseful! To reach a reasonable low latency value you should use high-end audio cards.

Audio input, not recording!
This first release of Hammer only supports live audio signal processing, this won’t add hard-disk recording features in Reason.

  • New album from Colony 5

An album clearly worth checking out, especially since we have not been treated with much new stuff from these two guys in ages, apart from a hardly worth purchasing remix album – unless you are truly hooked

Free listening and download (pay) >>

The first single taken from the album – “Knives” – made it to #10 on the German Alternative Chart [DAC] in a very short time. On “Knives” Colony 5 presents a track that is much harder than we are used to from the band. Sure enough, “Buried Again” presents you with some harder tracks such as “Knives” and “Get Off My Back”.

But old fans should not despair! “Buried Again” is a varied album bringing you everything from EBM-inspired tracks to more danceable futurepop with dynamic and powerful refrains in tracks like “Pills” and “Ghost” and the beautiful downtempo track “Imaginary Girl”– the way we are used to from earlier Colony 5 releases.

One of my old favorite tracks:

Music Messe 08: Melodyne Direct Note Access

March 13, 2008 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Music Messe 08: Melodyne Direct Note Access

Can´t wait to buy it :-)

    [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFCjv4_jqAY]

Direct Note Access is a technology that makes the impossible possible: for the first time in audio recording history you can identify and edit individual notes within polyphonic audio material. The unique access that Melodyne affords to pitch, timing, note lengths and other parameters of melodic notes will now also be afforded to individual notes within chords.

Take a stereo (or mono) track of polyphonic audio – piano, string quartet or whatever and then through some kind of wizardry, explode this into the separate individual notes and edit to taste as you would with monophonic audio within Melodyne.

New nice Reason Refill from Travis Huckins

March 12, 2008 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on New nice Reason Refill from Travis Huckins

    amf.jpg

Travis Huckins once again has provided CombinatorHQ the ability to display his wonderful talent for sound design in his newest refill “Alien Music Factory”.

This refill is packed with Combinators clearly organized for easy navigation such as Bass, Pads, Organs, Leads, Arps and many more. It stays amzingly true to it’s theme having Pads sounding spacey, Drums being synthetic and mechanical and Strings awkwardly eerie and sometimes serene.

This is a very pleasureable and meaty refill at just over 200MB!

Beware!! The new Toxic Biohazard is here (v4)

March 11, 2008 · Posted in Electronic Music · Comments Off on Beware!! The new Toxic Biohazard is here (v4)

    p_toxicbiohazard.jpg

Toxic Biohazard is the 4th generation in the line of Toxic synthesizers. Toxic Bio distills the best features from the previous 3 versions to deliver our most concentrated Toxic ever. Beware!

Toxic Biohazard features a hybrid synthesis engine, combining the best of FM and Subtractive synthesis. With the addition of a warm, analog-modeled filter and set of built-in effects, the Toxic concept remains one of convenience, simplicity, and superb sound quality.

    What’s new?

    • Improved sound quality
    • “Physical Envelopes” that allow you to model how sounds in real world decay & resonate etc…
    • Integrated effects such as tube-like distortion, to warm stereo delay, reverb, flanger, and phaser.
    • A hybrid synth engine combining FM and subtractive synthesis
    • A complete rebuilt FM engine adding warmth
    • Alias-free oscillators with low CPU consumptom
    • An integrated simple sequencer (64 steps, which can be divided into two independent, 32 step modules to allow double-polyphonic patterns. Using our own “Smart Sequencer” technology, when a chord is played, the module defines that chord, and tunes the pattern accordingly.)
