Nucleus shows us their latest refill – Filter Research 2
Nucleus SoundLab just released a cool new ReFill for Reason called Filter Research 2 and they’ve been demoing this rather slick effects bundle with a loop from Pop Drums Vol 1. Check it out:

Argotlunar, a real-time granulator effect plug-in
Mike O has released Argotlunar, a real-time granulator effect plug-in for Windows and Linux VST hosts. It’s free and Open Source – the source code is licensed under GNU GPLv2.
A grain is a sho rt sample of an input audio stream. Argotlunar can play up to 20 grains simultaneously, with each grain having unique and adjustably random settings of delay, amplitude, panning, duration, filter, pitch and glissando. The implementation is comparable to the AudioMulch Nebulizer.

- 12dB state variable filter (HP/BP/LP/Notch).
- Program change can be modulated by VST parameter.
- Feedback is capable of self-oscillation.
Space storms – the sun synth
Space Storms can sometimes go a bit crazy, and can cause all sorts of havoc on earth, like destroying electronics, killing power grids and wrecking satellites. NASA claims that we should experience such a storm sometime around 2013.
The scientists translated measurements the vibrations into sound (as the sound itself cannot travel through the near-vacuum of space), and sped up the resulting waveforms to put them into the range of human hearing. Other than just producing some pretty amazing sounds, “sun music” has other uses as well. Professor Robertus von Fáy-Siebenbürgen, head of the solar physics research group at Sheffield University, said:
Studying the “music of the sun” would provide new ways of understanding and predicting solar flares before they happen.

Second hand piano re-use
Few days ago I started thinking about how I could re-purpose the keyboard of the dismantled piano I keep in the garden, so I thought to build a new instrument by combining it with some other parts I had laying around. I ended up with this mechanical hybrid thing I thought to call “Bassoforte” (bass + pianoforte).
The neck is from a broken electric bass, as a bridge I used a cabinet handle, the pickups are from a guitar, and the part at the top where the strings are attached is a chimney cap, which works as resonator as well as percussive sound.

A quick demo of the BeatBearing that I put together for my PhD viva presentation. I captured a lot more footage than this, but had to cut it down for the presentation, I’ll try and get an edit that shows more of the novation launchpad as a pattern selector for the next video!

The first public showing of the Pittsburgh Modular Confluence Voltage Influenced LFO was Wednesday. Soy Sos came over and ran the module through it’s paces. He had a few great suggestions and pointed out a few necessary improvements. I spent last evening modifying the module and feel pretty good about it.
After updating the schematic to match the prototype, I built a 2nd module to confirm the schematic is correct. Can’t wait to patch both of these up.
