Native Instruments has announced the release of RAZOR, an innovative and highly distinctive software synthesizer designed together with forward-thinking electronic artist Errorsmith.
Berlin-based producer and renowned REAKTOR instrument designer Errorsmith is dedicated to the “expansion of the sonic horizon through digital sound synthesis”. RAZOR realizes this credo through the additive synthesis capabilities of the latest REAKTOR 5.5 generation, which were used to develop a high-resolution synthesis engine with unconventional sound shaping features and a unique real-time 3D spectrum display. The pristine and extremely dynamic sonic character of additive synthesis allows RAZOR to generate a wide and very distinctive array of energetic, hypermodern sounds, ranging from expressive basses and leads to complex, futuristic soundscapes.
RAZOR utilizes up to 320 partials for its sophisticated sound shaping algorithms. The dual oscillator section provides a wide arsenal of timbres, ranging from typical analog-style waveforms to unconventional models like “Primes”, “Sick Pitchbend” and “Hoover Sync”. The two filter sections offers 20 different filter types including innovative formant, vowel and waterbed models. A further section provides an arsenal of unique “Dissonance Effects” that further contribute to the unmistakable, charismatic sonic footprint of the instrument. RAZOR even integrates a high-performance 34-band vocoder that can also be used to process external audio signals of any type.
The user interface of RAZOR builds on familiar concepts of subtractive synthesizers, providing especially efficient and intuitive control for the underlying highly sophisticated synthesis engine. RAZOR also includes a library of 350 carefully selected presets with a focus on cutting-edge electronic sound aesthetics, accommodating both contemporary club music genres like Dubstep and Techno as well as modern film and game scoring applications.

Korg has updated iElectribe and iMS-20 to version 1.5, adding Wireless Sync, SoundCloud support and more.
Here’s what’s new in Korg iMS-20 1.5:
- WIST (Wireless Sync-Start Technology) allows wireless start between compatible apps on two iPads
- AudioCopy has been added which enables the sharing of audio data between compatible apps
- MIDI control capabilities have been enhanced (nano series 2 is now fully supported)
- A few minor bugs have also been addressed, improving operational stability

Reaktor Tutorial – Additive Synthesis
Native Instruments have just launched their latest Reaktor Synth called Razor and it is causing quite a stir in the sound design and production communities. So what makes this synth so exciting? Well it is down to a process called additive synthesis.
Put in the plainest terms possible, additive synthesis is the summation of simple tones to create more complex ones.
The sound is constructed from partials (or frequency components) firing in parallel, changing amplitude and even frequency over time. Additive synthesis is a very powerful sound design tool because the many micro-variations in the frequency and amplitude of individual partials mirrors those that makes natural sounds so rich and lively, and the resulting sound remains clear and precise at all times, even when heavily modulated.
This video demonstrates how to go about building an additive synth in Reaktor plus an overview of some of the other techniques that you will learn on the Point Blank Online Sound Design course ( http://www.pointblankonline.net/sound-design-course.php ). Even this fairly simple example consisting of just 8 partials, you can begin to hear how an additive synth can create an impressively rich and malleable sound. So when you think that Razor’s additive engine consists of up to 320 partials you can start to see why everyone is so eager to get their hands on it!

Vince Clarke is among the line-up of synth artists, remixers and sound designers who have contributed sounds to a new Bob Moog Tribute library of sounds for Omnisphere. The massive library consists of 2,4 GB of new sounds and 739 patches and is onsale now for $100 right here, with all proceeds going to benefit the Bob Moog Foundation including their MoogLab student outreach program, the creation of the future ‘Moogseum’, and their efforts to preserve and share Dr. Moog’s extensive and historic archives.
