Background info:

I wanted to see if I could create a beat using only a filter and a white noise source. What I ended up creating was more of a bassline once the Filter was fully resonant.
Here is the result in a high quality audio.

Korg Launches Kaoss Pad Quad Dynamic Effects Processor

Korg announced that it has begun shipping the new Kaoss Pad Quad (MSRP: $350), which employs new effects, functions and features that let users create their own combination of Kaoss effects with simultaneous control of up to four effects in real-time using a single fingertip on its touchpad. Any audio source can be processed: an MP3 player, a mixing board, an instrument or even vocals via the unit’s mic input. Korg has launched the Kaoss Pad Quad.

As users tap, slide or move their finger across the X-Y touchpad interface, the effect parameters will change, producing dramatic real-time transformations in the sound. The colorful LED touchpad illuminates in an intense variety of colors, which change depending on the state of the effects, the BPM setting and hand motions on the touchpad.

Designed to be both usable and highly playable as an effect processor, the Kaoss Pad Quad allows the user to simultaneously control up to four effects from the touchpad. Each of the four effect modules – Looper, Modulation, Filter and Delay/Reverb – contains five options (plus a module kill), for a total of 1,295 combinations.

Effects are chosen directly from the front panel for easy access during live performance. By rhythmically adding successive effects, or switching effects on and off as a song progresses, the Kaoss Pad Quad can add variation and development to the structure of any song.

Another feature is the Freeze button, which offers additional versatile control of effects. For each of the four effect modules, Freeze memorizes the position at which the user was last touching the touchpad, effectively “freezing” the state that effect was last in, even after release of the finger. By touching the touchpad again while Freeze is enabled, only the “unfrozen” effects will be controlled.

In addition to more traditional effects (flanger, low/high-pass filter, delay and reverb), the Kaoss Pad Quad offers many new types of effects:

Multi-Mode Looper for looping a part of a song; the number of beats is controlled by the location touched. Three types of looping are provided: the standard Looper, the Rev Looper (Reverse Looper which plays the looped phrase backward) and the Loop Slicer, which divides the phrase and lets the loop-play only a specific portion. Additionally, users can switch between the different looper types by sliding their finger up and down the touchpad as the loop plays, producing new beats.

Vinyl Break turntable effects, which allow users to create all the standard turntable rotation effects, including scratching, slow-down/speed up, stop and more.

Ducking Comp, creating effects of a “ducking compressor,” which has become a staple in music production.

Additionally, the proprietary Auto BPM engine automatically detects the tempo/BPM of the song that’s playing or the audio source. Users can also use the BPM knob to make fine adjustments. Alternatively, the BPM can be set manually using the Tap Tempo function.

Pink Floyd goes 8bit

March 27, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Pink Floyd goes 8bit

Pterodactyl Squad – a video game music netlabel – has released The Dark Side of the Moon – The 8-bit Album.

38 years ago today Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon was released in the UK, and Pterodactyl Squad are marking the date with their 30th release, The Dark Side of the Moon – The 8-bit Album.

After the success of Weezer – The 8-bit Album in 2009, the Squad assembled an “all-star cast of chiptune talent” to create a VGM-inspired tribute to 1973′s, The Dark Side of the Moon. All 9 tracks have been filtered through an 8-bit lens, and while each artist brings a different sound and creative angle to each track, the album flows seamlessly together, just like the original.

Pterodactyl Squad says:

Although attempted numerous times before, Pterodactyl Squad have finally done the original album justice with the definitive 8-bit interpretation of Pink Floyd’s progressive rock classic.

Produced as an 8-bit mirror of the original, the music on this release was created using sounds from various old games consoles including the Sega Mega Drive and Nintendo Game Boy.

Featuring tracks from Bit_Rat, EvilWezil, khades, Rabato, sergeeo, Videogame Orchestra, Jason Vincion, echosignal and Brad Smith and Temp Sound Solutions, the album is free to download.

The new MOONMODULAR M568A and M568P premier@Frankfurt Musikmesse 2011

The M 568 A module is an addition to the M 568 Quad Sequential Trigger Source.

It expands the four trigger tracks of the 568 QSTS with a couple of useful functions:
– each track has its own reset-input jack
– each track has two independent trigger outputs, which can be assigned to any desired step position
Assigning/deleting these positions takes place at the 568 QSTS module in combination with the „Select A” and „Select B” buttons at the 568 A module:
Press and hold the select A/B button (set positionen on the 568 QSTS blink), press the desired position at the 568 QSTS.
If a 568 P programmer module is attached to the 568 QSTS, the eight step-positions of the 568 A will be saved together with the sequences.
– each track has a 4-position rotary switch to select the 568 QSTS’s running direction
Changing the direction (except random) doesn’t happen at once but after the next reset (end/start/turning back) of the respective track.

The M568P programmer module is an extension to the M568 Quad Sequential Trigger Source.

Now 2 x 12 sequences/sequence-combinations can be saved to memory for later recall.
The non-volatile memory consists of two memory banks with 12 memory slots each. They are selected by the toggle switch “Memory Bank” and the 12-position rotary switch “Sequence Memory”.
Pushing the “Recall” button activates a saved sequence. The “visible” sequence is being hold in an edit-bufer, a sort of “zero”-memory position — so nothing will get lost when switching the module on and off. Only when a memory slot gets recalled the edit buffer is overwritten (therefore there is no automatic recall of the dialed memory position when the module is turned on).
To save an adjusted or modified sequence, push the “Save”-button (Save-LED blinks), select the desired memory-position and push the “Save”-button again (Save-LED dies out, sequence is saved).
To erase an adjusted or modified sequence, push the “Clear”-button (Clear-LED blinks), select the desired memory-position and push the „Clear” button again (Clear-LED dies out, sequence is erased).
To duplicate an adjusted or modified sequence or to move it to another memory slot, push the “Copy”-button (Copy-LED blinks), select the desired source memory-position, push the “Save”-button (Save-LED blinks), select the desired destination memory-position and push the “Copy”-button again (LEDs die out). The sequence ist copied now.
The buttons/jack combination under “Go to” in the lower part of the module the next and previous memory slots can be recalled — using the respective push-button or a trigger pulse.

Moog Etherwave Theremin with extended pitch range demo

March 26, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Moog Etherwave Theremin with extended pitch range demo

Here´s what the guy behind has to say about it:

This recording of Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise Op. 34 has absolutely no musical value. I’m not a musician, I’m a theremingénieur…. So this is a demonstration of my most recent development – a small module which is soldered onto the Etherwave’s circuit board and which extends the pitch range of this theremin by somewhat more than 1.5 octaves towards lower frequencies. The player will feel a much more stable and linear pitch field, even very far away from the pitch antenna. At the same time, the bass range of this instrument does not longer sound like a dying motorbike…

As the theremin goes very low, small computer speakers will perhaps not allow you to hear the extended bass in acceptable quality. Try using headphones or an external sound system…
