The Prophet ’08 truly signals the return of the classic Sequential Circuits Prophet synthesizers, in a beautiful, modern and ultra-stable programmable analog synthesizer! Building on the Poly Evolver keyboard, the Prophet ’08 offers eight voices of polyphony with a 100% analog signal path. The look is spot-on! Brand new, the Prophet ’08 already looks like it’s a classic vintage piece of history. And its sound really does blow you away!
Dave Smith is considered a legendary figure in the synthesizer world, he founded Sequential Circuits and designed such classics as the Prophet 5 and Prophet VS, and he was a pioneer in bringing MIDI to synthesizers. The new for 2007 Prophet ’08 brings back much of the original technology from those old Prophets (like Curtis filters and analog oscillators), updated of course, to meet today’s musicians needs.
While it doesn’t sound exactly like an original P5, it does sound and behave more like one than any other pretender. It’s cleaner, purer and a little more predictable than its 25 year old predecessors. Actually, it sounds just like the Poly Evolver, minus the digital oscillators.
Regardless, the Prophet ’08 is truly a modern day Prophet series synth. Unlike many (Roland) synths that are attaching vintage model names to their current synths even though they are almost nothing alike (Juno, SH, etc.), the Prophet ’08 is the real-deal next generation version of its predecessors. As DSI says, the Prophet ’08 is the product of evolution, not nostalgia. Of course, it includes features we now take for granted, like velocity and aftertouch. Add to that performance features like an arpeggiator, gated step sequencer, and the ability to split and layer sounds. The modulation possibilities are much deeper than anything Sequential ever produced, making it capable of producing sounds the “classics” simply could not.

You’re staying up late, way past your bed time, flipping through the channels, watching reruns of “Hey Vern, It’s Ernest.” All of the sudden you find yourself seriously lusting after this “Nu” appliance that will cut your cooking time in half, tastes better than the microwave, reduces the fat content of your Salisbury Steak, and as it turns out, makes for a pretty cool sounding synthesizer.
This weeks free Ableton Live Rack was created by sampling the tiny electronic beep from the info-mercial sensation, NuWave Oven. It’s not an uncommon electronic beep, it sounds like a stop watch, but when dropped into a sampler it becomes a haunting, ghostly pad or an atmospheric and organic electric keyboard. It has quite a bit of character on its own, and I have added some tasteful effects and modulations, as well as introduce some AM Modulation to bring out some nice harmonics. For such a short sample, under one second, this instrument has quite a bit of life. Enjoy it and spread the word

Vintage synths: KORG MICRO-PRESET Synthesizer M-500 SP – 1977
The Korg Micro-Preset model M-500 is a simple monophonic synth with a single oscillator architecture which came out 1977. As a preset synth it’s not very flexible – but it has a special, typical sound and some weird fx sounds! Also some good basses. The basic sound is very similar to the Minikorg 700.
The Micro-Preset M-500 has presets like flute, recorder, string, brass, human voice, oboe… and so on. It also has the synth registers SYNTHE 1 and SYNTHE 2 – these are synth voices and they are tweakable with ATTACK, DECAY and filter . There are saw and pulse waveforms, white and pink noise.
Unlike other preset synths the Micro-Preset has no aftertouch – but it has an other great feature: the presets are mixable! You can press more than two presets at once and sometimes you will get interesting results, like heard in the video. A bit like Korg Sigma.
The Korg Micro-Preset you see in the video is a later model. They came in a green/black color scheme and had a built in speaker. They were called M-500 SP.
I played the Micro-Preset with a Yamaha Pro R3 reverb and Roland DEP-5 for delay.
OMD used the Korg Micro-Preset a lot.
I also used it a lot, because it was my very first synth in 1990! Back then I wanted a Korg M1 or a Wavestation, but I could not afford something like that. So I bought the “second hand” monophonic M-500, which I got very cheap from a music store (80 D-Marks, = 40 euros), because nobody wanted it… indeed, they were happy to get rid of it. It was the only one “professional” synth (not a Casio or Yamaha toy), that I could afford – and I was happy!
