Scratch Sensor using the Android Smartphone

October 22, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Scratch Sensor using the Android Smartphone

Scratch is an interpreted dynamic visual programming language. Being dynamic, it lets code be changed even as programs are running. It has the goal of teaching programming concepts to kids and teens and letting them create games, videos, and music. It can be downloaded for free and is being used at home and in a wide variety of in-school and after-school settings around the world.
Connections between Scratch and other programs are made using the Scratch networking protocol. With this feature turned on, Scratch automatically sends all broadcasts and values of global variables out to any program connected to it. That program can also send broadcasts and global variables into Scratch. The Scratch Sensor is an Android app that uses the Scratch networking protocol to turn the Android Smartphone into a DAQ module and sends its accelerometer and compass sensor information and broadcast two states (jump and walk) to Scratch.

Moog goes back to its roots with the Ladder

October 22, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on Moog goes back to its roots with the Ladder

The Ladder, a new rack-mountable hardware processor that’s based on Bob Moog’s original ladder filter design.

Promising to deliver “all the punch, fullness and analogue euphoria of the original Moog Filter,” this also offers features designed to make it useful in today’s studios, details of which can be found in the press release below.

The Ladder will be available in December priced at $769.

Moog The Ladder press release

Moog Music, a North Carolina-based electronic musical instrument manufacturer, today announced the release of The Ladder, a Professional 500 Series Dynamic Ladder Filter based on Bob Moog’s original ladder filter design. The Ladder is Moog Music’s first 500 series module for the Pro Audio market and is designed to add depth, flexibility and classic Moog vibe to sound sources.

“There have been a lot of firsts for Moog this year.” said Mike Adams, President/CEO of Moog Music Inc. “The release of Animoog, the first professional synthesizer for the iPad has introduced us to whole new segment of customers. Now The Ladder will reacquaint Moog with the Pro Audio community that embraced Moog Modular Synthesizers in the 1960’s. We are very happy to see the market embracing this exciting format and we look to developing other modules.”

The Ladder packs all the punch, fullness and analog euphoria of the original Moog Filter, but adds key component and feature upgrades required for professional studio use. From classic Moog filtering and vibe to modern sweetening and wild, exciting behavior; The Ladder is a powerful, articulate sound sculpting tool.

The Ladder features include:

Low Pass and High Pass: The Ladder has inherited the smoothest all-analog filter section possible. Choose between LP and HP at the flick of a switch.

Cutoff: Simply adjust this knob to determine where The Ladder begins to sculpt the sound.

Attack and Release: These variable controls allow you to perfectly dial in the timing behavior of The Ladder’s envelope section. Use them to open and close the envelope as fast as lightning, or slow as molasses.

Amount: Use in Positive or Negative mode for mild to extreme sound shaping and manipulation. The amount determines how much signal is sent to the envelope section of The Ladder. From slight timbral excitement and voicing to extreme compression-like behavior and even reversed filtering is achievable.

Resonance: Controls the amount of harmonic bump at the cutoff frequency. This is the voice of The Ladder. Create sweet, dynamic or extreme speech like behavior and beyond. Accentuate specific frequencies to excite a sound or create completely new and unique ones.

NOTE: The Ladder’s Resonance control can push the unit into self-oscillation. This can be used for effect if desired.

2Pole/4Pole: Select how aggressive the filter slope is. 2 pole is equal to 12db per octave, which is smooth and sweet, while 4 pole is 24db per octave, which is hard, aggressive and most similar to a Classic Moog filter.

Bypass: Totally transparent relay bypass for routing and A/B comparison

Availability and pricing: The Ladder will be available at Moog Dealers worldwide in December 2011 for MSRP US$769.00.

Sewing Machine Orchestra

Not new but well worth watching :-)

Sewing machine orchestra is the first version of a performance created by martin messier. the basic sounds used in this performance consist entirely of the acoustic noises produced by 8 sewing machines, amplified by means of microcontacts and process by a computer.

the microcontroller system also enable to use the sewing machines to affect certain parameters of the acoustic sound. the wheel, for exemple, can be assigned to the output volume, etc. machine’s mechanism can be activated by remote, using microcontrollers and a computer, without the need for any other human intervention.

these old objects has the effect of taking the imagination further, primarily through their evocative power. whether they remind of specific incidents or recall the relationship to such objects, few people remain indifferent when they see them.

this creation was made possible with the support of the canada council for the arts.

TRON Grid Bugs Theme v Alesis Andromeda

October 22, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on TRON Grid Bugs Theme v Alesis Andromeda

GRID BUGS theme from the original arcade game from the early 80’s played through the Alesis Andromeda.

The Andromeda A6 is a true analog synthesizer using two analog oscillators per voice, sub-oscillators, hard and soft sync and more! It features 16-voice polyphony. With the Andromeda, you’ll find a huge range of tonal possibilities: searing leads, warm pads, fat bass lines, extreme sound effects and more. And of course there are plenty of knobs (72) and buttons (144), even an assignable ribbon controller for addictive hands-on real-time control! The large high-resolution LCD display is excellent and shows you actual rather than relative values of parameters. Andromeda will integrate seamlessly into any studio with its total MIDI control and sync, individual voice outputs, stereo outputs and several audio inputs.

Andromeda is completely analog – no emulation! It features two analog filters per voice that sound great! They are a multimode 2-pole and a 4-pole lowpass. External audio can be routed through these filters too (three 1/4″ jacks)! As for modulation, Andromeda has three LFOs, each with six waveforms and they can be synced to MIDI clock. And there are three 7-stage envelopes with very creative and flexible functions. Also onboard is an extensive mod matrix for enormous freedom in configuring Andromeda’s sounds!

No analog synth would be complete without a set of classic effects and features. Andromeda also offers Portamento with nine slopes and legato functions. A built-in arpeggiator and analog-style sequencer are available, with MIDI sync! There are also some high quality digital effects such as reverbs, chorus, echo, distortion and more! Andromeda comes with 256 breathtaking preset patches plus 128 user. A PCMCIA-format memory card slot allows for additional programs and mixes. Andromeda is pure analog bliss, with all the features, stability and widgets of modern digital synths.

New video and album from Foretaste – Superstar

October 21, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comments Off on New video and album from Foretaste – Superstar

Although I am quite keen on the electronic sounds popping up here and there in this new video from Foretaste, my biggest concern with this is that I am not really sure that Terrorist_XX has the full vocal range – at least in this song,  to really make me love it.

“Superstar” is the appetizer from the upcoming album and the single is out now via all digital platforms. In addition to two remixes of the title track, which one is signed record label colleagues Neutral Lies, it also includes alternate versions of two songs from the upcoming album.  The new album will be released in two editions in addition to the regular CD edition – a limited double CD that comes with the bonus “Live On Demand” ***. “Live On Demand” contains eleven live recordings from Germany (made in 2008) and gives all the new fans the opportunity to both hear the alternate live versions of the band’s old hits, but also songs from their (long) time expired debut album.

“Love On Demand” will be released November 21 via BOREDOMproduct.
