Celebrating Christmas with Erasure
Out on November 11th is the new Erasure album, which will be called “Snow Globe”. “Snow Globe” is a collection of 13 original compositions and seasonal classics. The album will be preceded by a single, “Gaudete”, which is the band’s interpretation of the Medieval Christmas carol that was also a folk hit for Steeleye Span in 1973.
Vince Clarke on what it will sound like:
Well, we’ll strip the songs down as much as possible and go really minimal. The songs are great anyhow, and Andy will sing like… well, Andy is Andy and that won’t change. The only thing that will change is the music. It will be very much 8-bit like and using sounds sparingly. I’m not sure people will like it, I’m sure they will though. But what we have done so far sounds very different to what we have done so far. (Interview via SL)
Satin Tape Machine – new effect plugin for Windows and Mac
u-he has announced the release of its Satin Tape Machine effect plugin for Windows and Mac.
With its three operation modes, SATIN is an all-rounder: Studio mode is predestined for multichannel tape saturation effects, all optionally controlled from a single instance. Delay mode offers complex multitap tape delays, and Flange does true through-zero tape flanging (think Small Faces “Itchycoo Park” or Hendrix “Bold as Love”). In all modes, the tape speed is continuously variable from 7.5 to 30 inches per second.
While aiming for a complete simulation of classic tape machines, u-he also decided to include the noise reduction circuits. This is not spurious whimsy: the classic compander models can be used for decoding old tape recordings, or for dynamic processing and colouration effects such as – a known trick amongst seasoned tape-ops – enhancing background vocals and e.g. acoustic guitars.

Mod Bus Output- Provides access to any selected modulation source. Send an LFO to your Moogerfooger, or select noise as a source and patch it to the Phatty’s audio input for hard-hitting snare drums and percussion effects.
Pitch Output- As the pitch of your synthesizer increases, so does the control voltage.When this output is connected to any control input on a Moogerfooger or analog synthesizer, that control inputs value will increase as higher notes are played and decrease as lower notes are played.
Gate Output- Each time a note is pressed, a gate signal is sent and when that note is released, the signal ends. This output can be used creatively with the Phatty’s built in arpeggiator to create rhythmic, drone, percussive effects in analog synthesizers and Moogerfoogers.
Volume Envelope Output- The shape of your Volume Envelope is outputted as a control voltage. When connected to other analog devices, an envelope yields dynamic and evolving control information that can be used in a variety musical ways.
Filter Envelope Output- The shape of your Filter Envelope is outputted as a control voltage. When connected to other analog devices, an envelope yields dynamic and evolving control information that can be used in a variety musical ways.
Groovesizer Alpha & Doepfer Dark Energy: random patterns
The Groovesizer (http://groovesizer.com) with Alpha firmware is a DIY 32-step sequencer and synth. In this video, it’s controlling a Doepfer Dark Energy via MIDI. The video shows off the random pattern generation of the Groovesizer Alpha (major, minor, pentatonic, chromatic).
The Groovesizer (pronounced groove-a-sizer) is a DIY 8-bit audio platform. It’s a musical chameleon that can take on a number of different roles from sequencer to synth, drum machine, or midi controller. Exactly what the Groovesizer is at a given moment depends on the firmware it’s running. Existing firmware can be freely hacked, or new firmware developed using the beginner friendly Arduino IDE. Firmware is loaded to the board directly from the Arduino IDE, either via an AVR ISP programmer, or by flashing the Atmega chip on an Arduino board and swapping it out.
The Groovesizer is based around a custom PCB that features 6 potentiometers and 5 rows of 8 tactile switches and leds (4 rows for the sequencer / trigger buttons and 1 row dedicated to control functions). It features an integrated Arduino clone, an 8-bit DAC option, an LM386 amp output, MIDI in/out/sync and is configurable to work with some of the most popular existing Arduino audio projects.
Furthest along in its development is the Alpha firmware which features a 3 oscillator monosynth attached to a 32-step sequencer with 112 memory locations to store patches and patterns.
