I originally bought a Sony HR-MP5 multi-effect processor when it came out in the ’90s. It broke irreparably in the early 2000s, and I’ve missed it since. Recently I had the opportunity to buy an HR-MP5 and HR-GP5 (the version for guitar) together as a combo deal, and was taken back in time by listening to the mesmerizing sound of the HR-MP5. Here are a few examples of the great FX of this small but cool machine.
Unlike its more costly cousins, the forgettably named (excuse me while I turn to the front page of the manual to remind me what it’s called) HR-MP5 isn’t a dedicated single-effect unit, but neither does it offer the degree of simultaneous effects processing we’ve come to expect from contemporary multi-effects processors. I like to think of it as the equivalent of two dedicated effects units in one box. The two units, or blocks, can be patched in any order, either in series or parallel, and the routing allows for the processing of two mono signals rather than one stereo or one mono signal, should this be deemed useful. The two individual effects blocks can be set to generate one effect at a time, and both offer a slightly different choice of effects, though 2-band EQ is always available in addition to whatever else the block has to offer. Some of the listed effects are actually combination effects, so the limitation of only two simultaneous effects blocks isn’t as restricting as it might at first appear. For example, Reverse Shift combines something that sounds like reverse reverb with pitch shifting, yet counts as a single effects block.
Tiny modular system from KORG and littleBits
Korg has teamed up with the littleBits and created a kind of modular system set with which you could create a modular synth/instrument. With the original littleBits Exploration Kit Series anyone and everyone can use the modules to create circuits and explore the world of electronics.
The littleBits Synth Kit is a scalable and easily customizable modular synthesizer system for anyone who’s interested in building their own little ‘analog’ system. Without knowledge of music or electronic circuit design, you now can easily assembly a synthesizer.
The whole system is really based on the littleBits Exploration Kit, however the intention is that it will and can be used for live sound and recording. The Synth Kit will be available in Japan first. If this kit will be available worldwide is not been confirmed.

Elektron Analog Four with Octatrak & Roland TR 606 Drum
The 606 has been modded by Analogue Solutions.
Much punchier than my old one 
The 606 was the percussion side-kick to the TB-303. It even looks like the 303. It stores up to 32 patterns and 8 songs. The 606 allows switching between Pattern Play and Write mode while running – making the 606 the only drumcomputer in the X0X series that can be edited while performing and switching patterns. It is also possible to link up to 4 consecutive patterns in Pattern Play mode. There is only a mono audio output, however there are mods from Kenton Electronics and Analog Solutions that will add individual outputs for each drum tone.
The 606 has seven analog drum sounds which are simple, yet great! Kick, Snare, 2 toms, open hat, closed hat, cymbal, accent. The hi-hats are a very tinny electronic sound and its toms are great for soft tribal patterns.

Here’s a little paraphonic action (chords) while Polymath’s onboard sequencer steps a steady rhythm. Nothing is processed and MIDI is NOT used in this example. The chords were played live, hence the slight off-beat nature of the performance.
After the first bit, you’ll hear ENV1 being switched to ENV2 (manually).

Moments Lost – Blade Runner revisited by Analog Sweden
Blade Runner is a world to get lost in and some have, at least Analog Sweden (Fredrik Segerfalk), Emil Arctaedius, Kilian Eng and HR-FM have. These artists have a vision to create 8 art works in the spirit of Blade Runner. The music will be made using similar equipment that Vangelis used in his Nemo Studio at the time of recording Blade Runner; Yamaha CS80, Roland VP-330, Yamaha CP70, Rhodes MkI, Roland CR8000, Prophet 5, Jupiter 4, Minimoog etc.
